Playing Favorites is the collection of music I will be giving away only during my marathon show: from
3 AM - 6 AM on March 10, 2002. The notes in the Comments column below are the kinds of notes I write to myself as I am preparing to do a show, and also represent what I think of each piece as I listen to it during the show itself.

I spend hours before a show choosing what to play and just what order everything must be in, both of which I do almost entirely by feel. While I pay particular attention to the arrangement of music within each set, the order of each set within the show as a whole is also important, and I've done exactly the same here. Doing shows in this manner is the only way I know of having the music affect me to the deepest degree possible.

Set 1: subtle acid and mystery.
Angus MacLauren  "Drunken Nightmare" (11:33)   Glass Music  Delicate echoes, shimmering, quiet….until the membrane of reality starts to subtly warp all around you. 
Not Breathing Vs. Dead Music On Air  "not breathing versus dvoa: unknown kadath" (12:48)   A Fire In The Bronx Zoo  Gradually unfolding, slowly washes over you in mostly dreamily mysterious, slow waves. 
 
 
Set 2: from dub to heavy.
King Tubby  "Dub From The Roots" (4:50)   From The Palace Of Dub  Very easy going, reverbed just right, even a bit spaced – but with a sweet spot. 
Beastie Boys  "Intergalactic" (3:29)   Beastie boys Anthology: The Sounds Of Science (selections)  Easy, getting more serious, very catchy, but a fun aspect as well. Pop hip-hop? 
Orbital  "Tension" (5:51)   The Altogether  Bit experimental & techno-y, heavier, more urgent. 
 
 
Set 3: from brass band wedding music to...watch out!
Fanfare Ciocarlia  "Asfalt Tango" (6:08)   Baro Biao  An amazing brass band from Romania. High energy dance music. 
Secret Chiefs 3  "Horsemen Of The Invisible" (3:36)   Book M  Starts off with a central European feel, but quickly changes to over the top heaviness. 
 
 
Set 4: psych & acid.
Sciflyer  "Girl" (4:04)   Studio Audience  Elegiac, highly sentimental & romantic. Almost sad, even.  
Surface Of Eceon  "The Open Sea" (6:30)   The King Beneath The Mountain  Warm, full sounding, gradually and moderately builds in intensity, very sentimental. 
Secret Chiefs 3  "Book T: Waves Of Blood" (2:27)   Hurqalya  Heavier, like acid surf-rock from outer space. 
The Bran  "baincol babidol" (3:29)   3xx3  Heavy, serious acid, sometimes even pounding. Nothing warm or sentimental about it. It's the theme song of the invaders from the dark side. 
 
 
Set 5: a few minutes of prime rock/punk.
Shag Nasty  "Looking For Love" (2:28)   Bad Teeth #1 (various artists)  Punk, but with almost a pop, insistent and catchy feel. 
Safety Pins  "Punkassbitch" (2:33)   Punkassbitch  Straight-ahead, no let up at all. Great to play loud. 
Adrenalin O.D.  "Paul's Not Home" (1:55)   New York Thrash (various artists)  The best for last: prime, stoopit, fast, frenetic, great, supreme, maybe even godlike.
