The Media Squat is freeform, bottom-up, open source radio looking towards similarly open source, bottom-up solutions to some of the problems engendered by our relentlessly top-down society.
Each show will initiate a series of discussions, which will themselves comprise part of an expanding wiki of resources, support material, and community-generated content.
This isn't pure '60s or Whole Earth radicalism and self-sufficiency (though it's certainly related) but a 21st Century, cyberpunk reclamation of all technologies and social contracts as essentially open source, up for discussion, and open to modification. It's an application of the hacker ethic and net collectivism to everything, done in the spirit of fun and adventure.
Ongoing forums with host, guests, and listeners take place at http://www.mediasquat.net.

Hypothesis: Gen X was exploited by the corporate machine because we couldn't agree on a better alternative, but we knew we really wanted one.

Re: wanting to regress and let an authority figure take control for us: This compulsion comes out in a lot of fiction. I see far too many books and movies with individual savior figures who die and come back to life to save everybody, like "The Matrix" and countless others, rather than groups of people working together to "save the day." It's a monarchy-loving impulse.

Gen X was first generation to grow up with tv since birth, leading to early cynicism, and hopefully for many, a movement BEYOND CYNICISM.

call me an aging idealistic hippie, but i still feel the spirit of giving and generosity will never fade. consumerism has run us ragged and made keeping up with the joneses alot more challenging and exhausting.

The democracy demanded by free people will not be governed by "leaders" living in stately government buildings -- not even leaders like Obama. Hopefully, he can help guide us past plutocratic domination to a place where real democracy can arise and leaders like him will no longer be needed (or tolerated).

The financial crisis revealed this: Things need to get done and there are people who need things to do (i.e., work). But it doesn't all come together because "finance" can't see how to make enough money doing it. That's why the current system, designed and run to make money for people with money, has to go. I don't know exactly how we can make it work, but I am sure we can.

X' er here. I xited in the eighties with the realization that a massive shift was going to happen and still is. Everything is balancing out. The surface does not really reflect the reality of what is beneath.

Good point annie! There are some people developing ideas for a "participatory economy", and there are great examples of workers cooperatives from around the world. We just have to find ways to get people moving...

I have some bad news to report: it appears that our main audio encoder and its back-up both had problems during Doug's show tonight. We've been unable to recover audio for this show. We're very sorry about this incident. I can promise you there will be audio for the show next week and we will also be putting a podcast up.
