The Media Squat is freeform, bottom-up, open source radio looking towards similarly open source, bottom-up solutions to some of the problems engendered by our relentlessly top-down society.
Each show will initiate a series of discussions, which will themselves comprise part of an expanding wiki of resources, support material, and community-generated content.
This isn't pure '60s or Whole Earth radicalism and self-sufficiency (though it's certainly related) but a 21st Century, cyberpunk reclamation of all technologies and social contracts as essentially open source, up for discussion, and open to modification. It's an application of the hacker ethic and net collectivism to everything, done in the spirit of fun and adventure.
Ongoing forums with host, guests, and listeners take place at http://www.mediasquat.net.

It's unfortunate that Doug's fellow Gen X-er, our beloved Prez Obama, seems to have missed—and dismissed—the valuable role psychedelics played in the rise of Internet culture during his web town hall a few weeks ago.

Hi all. Guest Stephen Burke, our Real Person Doing Real Things guest is coming up. Any questions about local currency? Stephen runs a local music store in Ithica NY called Small World Music.

Yes, Dave, a request: Please go slow. I'm still trying to wrap my head around local, as opposed to national, currency.

Are local currency transactions taxed like Fed Reserve Note transactions?

What are the possible down sides of local currency? They tried it here in Lawrence, KS and it was a real failure. Nobody used it etc..

I'm interested in combining a local currency with a microlending bank. For instance, the bank could loan Fed Notes to people starting a micro business, but require payback to some extent in local currency, so the loan recipient would have to transact to some extent in the local currency. Anything like that in Ithaca?

Can you tell us more about the LAwerence, KS experiment?

I'm not real familiar with it - it occurred before I moved there. I know a city manager introduced it and nobody used it. It was a mostly a matter of people not knowing where to use it, how to get it, how to spread the word that it existed etc..

One strategy to generate use is to produce a newsletter that tells people where they can be used. I think Stephen said they do that in Ithaca and they do it in the Columbia Gorge currency "river hours" in northern Oregon/southern Washington.

Sounds like a good idea. I'd love to find a way to reintroduce this. Here's a link for those who are interested on why it failed here: http://www.lawrence.com/news/2003/nov/03/the_real/

David &/or Douglas -- I have been checking the mediasquat forums but don't find anything like ongoing discussions, just random comments with an occasional response. Am I looking in the wrong place?

For local currency info (including historical examples) and an overview of how banking works, etc., see "Money: Understanding and Creating Alternatives to Legal Tender" by Thomas Greco. (I've read about half way through.)

Shawn, neither Rushkoff nor Obama are GenXers. They are both part of Generation Jones--born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and Xers. Give it a google; the whole GenJones thang is getting a lot of big-time media play.
