  9:06am gumby:

  9:07am PMD:

I feel the breeze blowing through the palm trees.
  9:07am annie:

crap, i have to walk the dog... bummer. i'm missing great music.. please save iz for later?
  9:09am Drummer Some:

Morning y'all. Fear not, Annie, there'll be musical leis offered throughout the show!
  9:10am Paul Sherratt:

Just remembered Doug, I owe you a copy of our Felix Mendelssohn & His Hawaiian Serenaders - unless I've forgotten that I've already sent it over !
  9:13am Drummer Some:

Don't have King Felix YET Paul, but you've got 50 years to get it to me in time for the 100th anniv.
  9:16am Parq:

Gee, only 9:15 AM and we've already gotten lei'd! Doug, have you been on the case at FMU long enough to remember the female DJ from the 80s who specialized in Hawaiian music?
  9:18am annie:

cutting the walk short, yay!! i've got my muumuu on and i'm ready!
  9:27am Drummer Some:

Parq,
Was it Margaret who played Hawaiian stuff? (She was the DJ who played the sound of loons as a music bed all the time.)
  9:33am Paul Sherratt:

annie,
Mine's shrunk
http://healthhabits.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/homer_muumuu.jpg
  9:35am monica:

Hey, Doug! i'm schvitzing over here but "A Wee Doech an Doris " was a great sonic cooler.Great to have you back...
  9:40am Paul Sherratt:

Monica,
Over where ?
  9:41am Parq:

"Monica Schvitzing" = GNFAB. Just sayin'.
  9:42am annie:

funny paul, thanks!! mine wouldn't fit me at this point i got it when i was 6.. lots hawaiian that year!
  9:44am Drummer Some:

I once dated a girl named Monica Schvitzing in high school!
  9:46am monica:

hi paul, parq et al! schvitzing in the belly of the beast - maadhattan. where the air quality is poor but the spirits are high (thanks to the drummer. parq, what the hell is GNFAB??? somethin' about the goyim or somethin? doug, i think you're making that story up, btw...
  9:49am Drummer Some:

Mo,
Actually Monica schvitzing nearly took down the White House. But that's another story.
  9:50am Listener Dave from NH:

I had to Google it too - it stands for "great name for a band" (and there's a website at http://www.gnfab.com )
Bananas.
  9:54am monica:

Oy latte! Thanks, Dave. Hey Doug, you're killin' me over here.
  9:56am Cecile:

Hi/bye all. Gotta meeting. Yay me.
Have a great morning!
  9:56am dc pat:

wow, Old Time Relijun borrowed this bass line (Marco di Marco Trio) in one of their vampire tunes... in case anyone cares...
  9:57am north guinea hills:

w00t! WV! (native West Virginian)
  10:06am Paul Sherratt:

And do you have anyone in The Senate who resembles Lightnin' Hopkins ? !
  10:07am Parq:

My turn to be out with the dogs. Sorry for the confusion -- "GNFAB" has been comment-field-speak for a while now. I actually picked it up from another of the regulars. Monica, is Manhattan in mid-August a drag or what?
  10:13am Hugo:

Hi y'all! Listening in from the new office in town, on the outskirts of the university area - half-way attached to the law faculty. Ten minute-walk from home! Howzat?
  10:13am gumby:

Doug you are kickin' some audio-A today. ALOHA!!!!
  10:19am gumby:

Paul we got no "How, How, How" in the Senate. We got what Sonny Boy Williamson refers to as, "A whole lotsa peoples talkin', but nobody gots nothin' to say"
  10:21am Drummer Some:

Hey Hugo,
I just read that, according to some hi-falutin' survey, Oslo is the world's most expensive city. NYC came in at #6. (I wonder where Bergen falls on the list?)
  10:21am monica:

parq- worse than the coldest cold spell for sure. right?
  10:23am Carmichael:

Good Friday Morning, everyone.
  10:30am gumby:

monica & parq,
I love this weather in suburbia. Road kill disappears in like a week. And the stench of garbage should remind everyone to not consume & throw out so much.
  10:30am Hugo:

Doug, it all depends on the methodology - what is being measured and how the indexes are constructed. On this one, Oslo is 14, though it's higher on other surveys. NYC is 8, btw. Bergen would be lower, at least on account of real estate prices, but otherwise comparable.

http://www.citymayors.com/features/cost_survey.html
  10:31am dc pat:

I agree with that monica. Remember this folks when we're deep into winter and everyone's complaining about that. I'll take fierce cold over disgusting heat any day.
  10:33am Parq:

Hugo, I live a ten minute walk from work too. Ain't it great? Monica and other weather-commenters, August and February suck perfectly equally in my book. Give me May and October - or at least, the way May and October used to be.
  10:35am Hugo:

On another survey, Luanda, the capital of Angola, comes out on top! Related to being an oil exporter, I would think ...
  10:36am Hugo:

Parq, it sure is!
  10:36am David Johanson:

"Hot, Hot, Hot!!!"
  10:36am Carmichael:

Ten minute walk?!? I live in suburbia, where I have to drive to get anywhere. The good part is it's a ten minute DRIVE to work with no freeway. Beats my previous 45 minute freeway crawl to a crappy job in another city.
  10:37am gumby:

Is it time fo rMai Tai's yet????
  10:39am Drummer Some:

Hey!! Who spiked the guava juice?!
  10:39am jk:

love this song, I can never get it out of my head, I'm wearing down a pair of shoes. thanks doug!
  10:43am J-Mar:

Got any Herbie Remington, Mr. Drummer Some?
  10:43am Parq:

German Hawaiian cowboys -- Doug, you're a genius.
  10:44am Hugo:

Nice selection. Laura Cantrell did a FMU premium of Hawaiian songs some years back, a fine thing to have ...
  10:44am Drummer Some:

J-Mar
Ach! I left my Herbie Remington at home. Couldn't fit it ALL in.
  10:48am Ronan in Dublin:

Oh this is great. I want to get melacholic and drunk and shuffle around alone in a crowded room but it's ths middle of the afternoon here so I'll have to wait til nightfall.
  10:48am Paul Sherratt:

Parq,
I think they may be Dutch !
" Es Hängt Ein Pferdehalfter an der Wand " and I bet he said that to all the girls / boys ..
  10:49am J-Mar:

No worries. If it's steel guitar, I'm digging it.
  10:49am gumby:

Actually the Hawaiians are pretty proud of their cowboy culture. It seems some native Hawaiians went to a rodeo in the 1800's and kicked some but and won some competitions. I guess it was sort of one of those Jim Thorpe type things. "We can compete and win on your playing field."
  10:51am dc pat:

what could be better than German Hawaiian cowboy music??
  10:52am Pedantic Drummer:

I think that might be "koko ni sachi ARE", Doug. As it is, it reads "there is a happy ant".
  10:52am Hugo:

Speaking of Laura, just received her new cd, won during the marathon on the DS show. Thank U! Shall be savoured!
  10:56am annie:

drum some: i have been blissfully meandering in and out of musical joy this fine rainy morning. thanks...
  10:57am Paul Sherratt:

I think Doug's got it got right, Pedantic, turn this over and check !

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51G0rUgP4PL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
  10:57am boku sachi:

great hawaiian music, btw
  10:59am boku sachi:

@ Paul, maybe, but "koko ni sachi are" means "that's where happiness is", which sounds like a song about hawaii.
  11:00am annie:

http://incaroads-wvkayaker.blogspot.com/

scroll down the page of this site and drool... i say drool... all that music!!!
  11:01am gumby:

A comment on the sumemr is better than the other three seasons thing. In summer I get Jersey tomatoes and basil with fresh mozzerella, maybe the greatest food ever!
  11:01am MIKE cooper:

Hi Doug - Cyril wrote this song on the train going to the studio the day we recorded it. I am in fact singing in French - a fact i only learnt after we had done it - the title Nale Pa La Hula - is in fact French for 'This is not the hula". Cyril is playing the guitar not me on this one. Ciao for now and Aloha
  11:05am Drummer Some:

Brother Cooper,
"This is not the hula," then, was the perfect selection for that last set (and I don't speak French neither). Thanks for the clarification -- and the music.
  11:09am annie:

any pierre bensusan, this is reminding me of him..
  11:13am Paul Sherratt:

boku,

Thanks. And I rather like the idea of " there is a happy ant " ! And I do like this Marc Brierley too - we never get to hear folk music as fine as this coming out of our our UK radio sets ...
  11:15am Carmichael:

Love the folk, Doug. The 70s rule!
  11:16am annie:

carm, that was the best time.. those summers and that great music..
  11:18am Hugo:

That's not Mangelsdorff singing?
  11:19am Carmichael:

Annie, I came of age in San Francisco in the very late 60s - early 70s. I have amazing memories that I tell over several beers.
  11:20am Drummer Some:

@Hugo
The singers w/Mangelsdorff are Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart. (I knew your ears would prick up on this one.)
  11:22am Parq:

Doug, that long brass solo (was it a 'bone?) reminds me; I've spent some time with your premium this week and I totally dig it. I was expecting something more along the lines of western brass-based jazz, and having so much marching-band-style stuff instead was a great treat.
  11:24am Drummer Some:

@Parq yup, bone it was. So glad you dug the premium!
  11:26am El Thatchmo...:

What a little hipster you've become, Doug, playing Vetiver. Next up: Juana Molina!
  11:29am Hugo:

If it has the Schäl Sick Brass Band, it's gotta be alright. But it probably does not have the Nepal Police Academy Brass Band ...
  11:32am Drummer Some:

@Thatch I am hipper and hipper
@ Hugo Bring my back an autographed copy! (You always do when you go to Nepal.)
  11:38am mike cooper:

Doug = the Mangelsdorf was brilliant - never heard that before - Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart were British - they deserted the motherland early on and went to live in Germany - still do probably.
  11:38am annie:

carm, a very close friend of mine attempted to immerse himself in the beat poet thing there, specializing in gutter sleeping and drinking.. he is still a poet..
  11:42am Carmichael:

@Annie - You could do that back then. North Beach was a cool place to hang out. I just went back to the Haight while on vacation. Some things never change ...
@Hugo - You go to Nepal? I'm very jealous. That's been one of my life dreams. I will go someday.
  11:43am Hugo:

Ah yes, that was a nice guy. We went to see Trilok Gurtu playing at the Kathmandu Jazz Festival!
  11:44am annie:

i was there in late 70s. ... oh god i love this music.. stops me in my tracks..
  11:44am mike cooper:

Colin Wilkie - http://www.colinwilkie.de/

Its all in German - probably means' this is not the hula either' in german :-)))
  11:46am Paul Sherratt:

Carmichael,
Hugo works in Nepal ! A ten minute + drive from Bergen, Norway
  11:47am Hugo:

Yes, Carmichael, regularly over the last years. But I usually go to the least touristic areas - the terai - the plains of the south bordering India ...
  11:47am Parq:

John Narucki once commented that Hawaiian-style singing "always sounds like someone's nuts being grabbed". Oh man, what a great loss his passing was!
  11:49am Hugo:

Paul, can I borrow your car?
  11:51am Drummer Some:

@Cooper Thanks for the correction on Wilkie & Hart. I can always be counted on the spread the misinformation I stumble on in Blogland (not to mention all my own homegrown miscues and misrememberings.) It is a huge pleasure to have you listening and offering knowledge.
  11:52am Carmichael:

Doug, what inspired you to go Hawaiian this morning?
  11:52am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
The car, it's Swedish. Is that ok ?
  11:53am annie:

50 years a state carm.
  11:55am Drummer Some:

@Carmichael I still feel bad about missing Alaska's 49th B-Day party
  11:58am El Thatchmo ...:

My only saddness is the exclusion of Kalama’s Quartet in today's show.
Oh, the islands ...
  2:35pm El Thatchmo ...:

And Glad the Vetiver is making the rounds here. That's what I buy my wife when I'm flush. Have a counter girl @ Bendel's names Olive Cox-o-Luxe
  7:32am Michael Cover:

Great stuff as usual .The Hawaiian bent was an absolute treat .Thanks from Brighton UK
  9:52pm johnny kyzer:

i love the song by d f mciver do you know where i can get the original and the filp side of the single porchlight
