Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from December 15, 2009 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Cecile:

north guinea hills:

?:

  4:44pm
BSI:

zardoz has gotta be one of the most sample-able films in, like, ever...
  4:51pm
slugluv1313:

okay, here is a question: there was another hardcore show on WNYU in the early 1980s -- does anyone remember the name of it? and/or the name of the host??? (oh the *joys* of . . . SENILITY!!!)
  4:52pm
Cecile:

was it Noise the Show?
  4:57pm
BSI:

They referenced Fugazi in that little bitchfest, so that would place it at like 1988 or later, methinks.
  4:58pm
doc labyrinth:

well they also referenced it's clobberin time. didn't that come out in '89? krs one intros it as 'fresh for '89, suckaz'
  5:03pm
slugluv1313:

"Noise the Show" does not sound familiar, but thanks! . . . and it is all the ABC No Rio people, which started doing shows in around 1990??? so maybe this here lil *debate* is from around 1990? 1991?
  5:05pm
Doc Labyrinth:

either way, it really brightened up my afternoon. i was not expecting that little treat at all.
  5:06pm
slugluv1313:

yes EXACTLY! what i heard was totally HILARIOUS!!!
  5:08pm
Doc Labyrinth:

it's a really good example of why i can't take these guys seriously. i mean , i love punk and hardcore, but everything becomes such a little turf/click war. perfect example is how that interview just tumbled into the abyss of petty personal attacks
  5:09pm
Todd 76%:

Hey Brian,
That's got to be late 80's at the earliest...Sick Of It All didn't form 'til 1986. I'd guess '89-'90...awesome show as usual! "More Than..." blogger is CT's own Chris Prorock, a great drummer and DJ, currently playing w/ Ultrabunny
@slugluv: Cecile's right. It was Noise the Show. The host was Tim Sommer (later of the band Hugo Largo!?!?). That show was over by about '84...
  5:10pm
TorontoDerek:

Impossible to beat early Mekons!
Thanks for that!
  5:11pm
Bad Ronald:

This set is kickin!!!
  5:11pm
Cecile:

Yeah, Todd 76% I was a Big Takeover fan, and the 'zine originally started as a playlist with some extras for Noise the Show.
  5:13pm
Cecile:

that is if IIRC...I don't always any more.
  5:16pm
BT:

Corrected...I thought of BA and Rorschach as more 86ish but yeh def later.
  5:18pm
AnAnonymousParty:

The Hardal would be even better if the guitar was in tune.
  5:19pm
Todd 76%:

Yup, Jack Rabid of Big Takeover was an early NYC hardcore scenester, drummer for Even Worse, and friend of Tim Sommer (who was also an 'alternahost' on MTV later)...My fave Noise the Show was the '60 songs in 60 minutes' one - quite a DJ feat!
  5:21pm
Cecile:

Yeah, and wasn't Thurston Moore in Even Worse for a hot minute?
  5:22pm
BT:

Anon if yr looking for in-tune guitars you are listening to the wrong radio program.
  5:24pm
BSI:

wow, nice touch.
gotta go home & hug my VDGG albums now. (H to He, etc)
  5:25pm
Todd 76%:

Yes, saw him with them in about '80 or '81...the memories do haze over, don't they? Jack was a big supporter of the early CT hardcore scene and helped CIA, Reflex from Pain, Vatican Commandos, etc. get NYC gigs.
  5:25pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Accidents happen.
  5:28pm
slugluv1313:

thanx, Todd and Cecile! for some reason i thought there was another hardcore show on WNYU . . . yup, memory certainly DOES haze over!
  5:42pm
Cecile:

well, I'm outie. Have a great evening, folks!
  5:43pm

  5:49pm

Wow, I didn't realize until I heard it that this Skip Spence song is *exactly* the song I needed to hear at this moment. And it was recorded about a mile or two from where I'm sitting at this very moment.
  3:10am
Stu kaWOWski:
