  Fri. 9/17/10 9:14am texas scott:

hiya it too early to start calling you
the pittsburgh kid ?
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:16am Drummer Some:

The subject matter of Chalkdust's song concerns the topic of his doctoral thesis at the University of Michigan!

Top of the mornin', Texas Scott. Hey, all listeners, be sure to tune in to our chum Scott's Internet radio show tonight:
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:17am G Downie:

Morning make Friday working at home all that it is!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:19am Drummer Some:

Hey hey Merv and G Downie.
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:23am Jack:

Hey Doug!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:26am Drummer Some:

Hiya Jack, how you be?
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:34am Paul Sherratt:

Good morning/afternoon etc, good music lovers. Apologies for turning up late but the local roads were closed for a very, very, very long load. Don't they know what day it is ?!!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:44am Drummer Some:

Brotherman Paul!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:46am Paul Sherratt:

" Added remotely from Pittsburgh " Four of the finest words of the week !

Brother Doug, good day
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:46am Bill:

All cats hate closed doors. They feel it's part of their inalienable rights as superior creatures to go where they please and you as servant should not be blocking them.
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:46am annie:

just thinking this out loud: for practically the whole 57 of my years here on planet earth, my ears have been awash with music of every form. what joy it is to be so overwhelmed with the beauty of sound and rhythm. i never tire, ever, of the range of the notes and variation on a theme of word combinations which accompany them. music surely is the food of love; in its esoteric sense the purest.. (imho)
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:48am Drummer Some:

Annie, you have just put in words the essence of what this show is all about. May I hire you as a copywriter?
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:49am jill:

what she (annie) said....
Doug, thanks for the Laurie Verchomin link on Mining the Audio, It was pretty heavy. Good morning, all!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:50am seang:

Cumbia, muy chevere!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:51am Paul Sherratt:

Spot on !

Loved that Julio Jaramillo who reminds me of one Odilio Gonzalez. Look out for him in your musical journeys
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:52am Randy:

Hey brother Doug!
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:53am Drummer Some:

So glad to see you Seang and Jill. Yeah, that account of Bill Evans's final days/hours was gruesome. Such a placid guy on the outside; such tumult inside.
Anyone not sure what we're talking about, go and read this interview with Bill Evan's girlfriend at the time of his death:
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:57am Drummer Some:

Welcome aboard Randy!

Paul: Tell me something about Odilio Gonzalez (in essay form).
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:58am treeve:

This is the first time I've heard Wilfrido Vargas but certain it won't be the last.
  Fri. 9/17/10 9:58am Randy:

I'm going to see if we can link the stream to the PS 58 5th grade blog :)
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:00am Drummer Some:

Randy, I'm sure the fish would like to hear this tropical stuff I'm playing.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:01am ∂avid:

feels good today! keep it up!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:02am Randy:

They are grooving to it right now :)
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:03am Drummer Some:

Treeve, Wilfrido Vargas was the biggest star out of the Dominican Republic from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s. There was a time, in Washington Heights in upper Manhattan (a big Dominican neighborhood), where you'd hear Vargas blasting on radios out of every—I mean every—window.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:11am ken:

i loved his long throw from the outfield too. he could nail a runner like nobody. from a former right fielder. little league...
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:13am Drummer Some:

The reason I moved to Pittsburgh is that my wife got a teaching position at Pitt's law school. Right behind her building is a portion of the old outfield fence from Forbes Field, which Señor Clemente patrolled meticulously.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:14am Paul Sherratt:

When does the essay have to be in for ?
See that last Talkover music item ? One of the suggestions placed on Good Gideon's bbc mb late last night ... that old synchronicity thing at it again
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:14am ken:

and mercilessly. this from a cubs fan...
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:15am Drummer Some:

Paul: Essay due by show's end. No smudge marks!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:17am texas scott:

denver duke this set?
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:18am treeve:

Thanks for the info Doug, sounds like a magical time to be alive in Washington Heights. Gonna look into Willfrido later...
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:18am Drummer Some:

Anyone else wearing a WFMU T-shirt? I going Monkey Brain today. What about you?
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:19am annie:

hey doug, sure i'll be your copywriter... just have to catch me in the throes of bliss, is all.
Fri. 9/17/10 10:19am Lisa from Brooklyn:

Hi from Brooklyn - luckily not the tornado-hit part. Lovely to work at hom this morning. Hi to Jesse and Linc.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:19am treeve:

It's synergy Paul. Feel it brother!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:20am Drummer Some:

Hi Lisa. Glad you're OK! (Some of the photos look baaaad.)

Yes, Texas Scott, Denver Duke coming up song after next.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:26am texas scott:

wow.denver duke really lives up to the billing.
are you sure it was a dude?
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:28am Leigh:

Howdy, Doug!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:28am Drummer Some:

Hey everyone, the reason listener Texas Scott knew I was going to play Denver Duke is because he receives my weekly newsletter. Email me if you'd like to get it too.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:29am texas scott:

I can see a Crying Game-type doc on Denver.
Fri. 9/17/10 10:30am listener james from westwood:

loving this hillbilly/western set!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:31am sinner:

Denver Duke is CREEPY.....but I understand there are a lot of transvestites in the choir. You should play some Ola Belle Reed for a woman who sounded like a man.; or Willmer Broadnax who actually passed for a man.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:32am jk:

Dick Curless also has a great LSD country song
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:37am Paul Sherratt:

Duke & Denver
and sinner kevin we was only talking about you just yesterday, over here in the uk.
The pope didn't get a mention.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:38am Drummer Some:

Hey Sinner, I worship Ola Belle Reed.

Hi there jk and Listener James from Westwood (not L.A.)!
Fri. 9/17/10 10:38am Mike in Poughkeepsie:

Howdy Douglas, Windows thought your email was phishing me; put it in the "junk" file. You the man!
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:42am Drummer Some:

Mike, I'd never phish you, Dude! And I'll never play Phish neither. (OK, now that I've said that, I'll have to spend weeks finding one Phish tune to play on the show just to buck my own bias.)
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:47am still b/p:

Late comment note -- For those with combined historical Pittsburgh & baseball interests, acquaintance of mine went wading and digging deep in both for personal odyssey and opera (Pt. 1 below Pt. 2 on page):
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:47am swampsucker don:

i have the rat on the spit t-shirt on today-priceless just like a mastercard commercial(oops did i just reference a commercial on a non-commercial station)
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:52am Drummer Some:

Swampsucker D, I believe that shirt is affectionately referred to as the "end times" shirt.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:53am ∂avid:

oh man. i stepped outside for a smoke and missed denver duke. i'll have to google him after the show.
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:55am Drummer Some:

∂avid, Denver would call you a sinner for sure (for missing his song, not for the smoking).
  Fri. 9/17/10 10:56am Carmichael:

Happy payday Doug and peeps. I also missed Mr./Mrs. Duke. Thanks God for archives.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:03am sinner:

...but did the Pope admit he smokes dope????
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:04am Drummer Some:

A bare Pope smokes dope whilst shitting in the woods, methinks.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:04am Randy:

This is a monstrous Gil Evans track!
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:06am trs:

  Fri. 9/17/10 11:10am annie:

a variation of soap on a rope, eh? dope on a pope
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:12am annie:

doug, trouble has her birdsong, will you have cat-song??
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:17am Drummer Some:

Sure, but which cat? I have three: Mouse, Oreo and Bluestar. (Yes, a cat named Bluestar.)
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:19am annie:

all three... put some catfood rubbed on your ears and let them in the room, we can listen to them meowl
Fri. 9/17/10 11:25am Alex in Illinois:

That was a 13th floor Elevators song? It didn't have the electric jug going bililililip in it at all.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:25am monica:

hi doug. am thoroughly enjoying this morning's show!! onward, upwards....
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:26am Drummer Some:

Alex, there was a bililililip. Probably just a lousy quality MP3.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:27am Brian Sanders:

Hi Doug, I can see but cannot hear, at work right now. My wife & I are off to Bruges tomorrow to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary & escape the papal visit. Papal wellies anyone. You would think that the church was above that sort of thing!!
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:32am Drummer Some:

Hi Monica! Onward non-Christian non-soldiers!

Hi Brian (even though you can't hear me).
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:32am ken:

incredible interview re: bill evans. a must read. a friend told me about seeing him at the vanguard with the bloated fingers. also, strangely, i believe another friend's father represented him as his attorney! very sad, what incredible music came from that tortured soul. btw -- somewhere on the internet are a series of videos he made with an amateur pianist in the south in the early 60's. incredible.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:33am swampsucker don:

doug, don't know if your a baseball fan,if you are you sure are in the wrong city
Fri. 9/17/10 11:34am David father of Manu:

Ah sweet sixties! How do you find this stuff Doug? So good that you are still here on Friday mornings.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:38am Randy:

Hey David father of Manu :)
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:39am Drummer Some:

Hey David! Great to hear from you. How do I find this stuff? I spend all of my time and most of my daughter's college fund digging it up! (All for you, good people.)

Swampsucker Don: I am a HUGE baseball fan. It is poetry to me. My favorite teams have always been the Orioles and the Mets, so I know suffering. This is a whole other scale though (Pittsburgh Pirate baseball). Kind of epic and beautiful.
Fri. 9/17/10 11:39am David father of Manu:

Hey Randy...father of Xander perhaps?
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:40am Randy:

yes sir !
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:41am Randy:

We are kinda liking the Pirates right about now :)
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:42am annie:

mr. drummer; i was in baltimore the day after the Os won the series back in 83.... what a great feeling of hungover joy in those streets..have always loved them, too.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:46am Aaron:

great set this am!
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:49am Drummer Some:

Annie, I can still see Ripken leaping to his tallest height to grab that last liner. (I was always an Eddie Murray guy more than a Ripken guy.)
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:51am swampsucker don:

who's your fav met, i have always loved rusty staub
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:51am Drummer Some:

  Fri. 9/17/10 11:52am Randy:

Not Mookie?
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:53am øשlqæda:

nice vibes
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:56am Drummer Some:

Blessings to you, øשlqæda. I am honored.
Mookie is up there. My daughter's first baseball hero was Mo Vaughn. He sure has turned out to be an amazing guy. She has good taste.
  Fri. 9/17/10 11:58am still b/p:

Nice show. Thanks, Doug.
Onward, pagan soul dudes.
