Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 5, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:03pm
Marco In Brooklyn:

Afternoon Brian :-(
  3:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

nice mellow start doing my ears some good here
  3:04pm
BT:

Hey all, welcome to yas.
  3:05pm
Marco In Brooklyn:

Song makes me very sad:-(:::
  3:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Maffitt/Davies song sounded very unique--never heard them before, nor a song quite like that either.
  3:21pm
Marco In Brooklyn:

Very scratchy record. Sounds like it has a lot of dust on it
  3:22pm
Xavi:

fudge! i missed out on 20 minutes!
  3:22pm
Xavi:

back for more action! last week was awesome!
  3:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

I just remembered why that Drakh sounded familiar: Brian Eno's Music for Airports. I think that main ambient "riff" is just like it.
  3:23pm
Marco In Brooklyn:

I have eno's music for airports on my iPhone
  3:26pm
Xavi:

it was funny talking to Evan Dando about Brian Eno. we ended up talking Phil Collins. i found it surprising he din't know about Slowdive considering they were from the same heyday.
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Marco: Do you listen to it if you're in an airport?
  3:30pm
Cecile:

Xavi, accoring to a number of people back then, their records were kind of hard to find. And the 90s were the time when even completists just threw up their hands. Too much stuff!
  3:30pm
Xavi:

LOL...I almost lived at an airport when i was homeless but it would have been good music. Big ship still my favorite Eno track along with that other one about brains being scrambled
  3:31pm
Xavi:

yeah, but this was around 2004 Cecile. i didn't find out about them till waaay later
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Where can I sign up for this Pablo Cruise fan club??!! Then I'll rummage thru 50-cent Goodwill records to find their whole catalogue!!!
  3:33pm
Cecile:

One of the dudes from Pablo Cruise co-wrote the Baywatch theme song. Don't ask me why I know this.
  3:35pm
Cecile:

from their website:
"At that point there was a bit of a mystique as to who Pablo Cruise really was. When asked, “who’s Pablo,”the band, which is a quartet, would answer, “he’s the guy in the middle.” When asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this, “Pablo represents an honest, real, down to earth individual; and Cruise, depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life.” In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise’s music is all about – honest, real, down-to-earth vocals, accompanied by fun, yet elegant and infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event. "
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

I just heard Eno's "Deep Blue Sea" today, evidently it was recorded for the Trainspotting soundtrack (which I know of, but still haven't seen). It always cuts away rapidly at the end when I've heard it instead of what would seem like a nice fade-out. Does anyone know what comes after that track (or after it's played in the film?)
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: I wasn't going to ask! I really wasn't!!
  3:38pm
QSP:

Matt: Deep Blue Day is originally from the Apollo soundtrack.
  3:39pm
Cecile:

I know you wanted to, though, Matt.
  3:39pm
steve:

zomg, more gibbons
  3:40pm
3puen:

je'dore strafe
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

(blush) You're right, Cecile. Who am I kiddin'!

Re: your comment about too much stuff in the 90s, I have noticed that CD singles and EPs from the early-mid 90s are hard to locate unless they've been packed into a comp. Some bands though, are coming back with CD EPs, and they're easier to find too.
  3:43pm
steve:

id really like to hear an all dance music set by brian...
  3:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@QSP: OMG thanks! "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" from '83. So there's probably some interesting transition into "Weightless" that always gets cut when I hear it.
@steve: I'd like to help Brian do it, as I'm not much of a dancer and may actually enjoy that...
  3:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

this Pieces track keeps rippin' on
  3:52pm
QSP:

Matt, if I remember correctly, the original track fades in and out like a passing merry-go-round, and is only a few minutes long, much like the above-mentioned Big Ship from Another Green World.
  3:54pm
dc pat:

man, is there ANYthing wrong with Afrirampo? when are they coming to dc?....
  3:57pm
Mike East:

Isn't that the scene in trainspotting when he dives into the toilet to get his suppositories?
  3:57pm
QSP:

Mike - Yes!
  3:59pm
Wikipedia:

Early in June of 2010, Afrirampo announced that they would be disbanding after their final show in Osaka on June 26th. However, their homepage stated in Japanese that if the "Mother of Heaven" called upon them to play together again, they would play. In the English version, they stated "If our mother of monster say "PLAY!PLAY!together!!", then we will play," indicating that the door is open for future reunions.
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Since Trainspotting's back in my attention, I'll throw that on the Netflix queue to finally see that.
Thanks QSP, Mike.
  4:03pm
mother of monster:

  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Maybe Dee Snider with a wisdom tooth out and painkillers, and only one burned out amp.
@Brian: I think that answer's the query. Thanks.
  4:26pm
Ryan M.:

last I knew, Future Blondes was loosely based in Paramus, NJ but broke up in 1978 due to a dune buggy accident.

You guys need to honor your influences and start some articles: Rusted Shut, another band I'd now like to learn more about with no wiki!

Although, I noticed that if a page was speedy deleted, even years before, it's difficult to start the page again properly--it's why it took so long to re-start the Black Hollies page.
  4:34pm
domokos:

we don't care much about anything...
