Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 26, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Xavi: Thanks! I ought to do that for recording audio live (w/o an Archive). Might as well enjoy it during AND after!
  3:54pm
Human Garbage:

Fine, thanks. And you, No Trend? Feelin' a bit "antsy" today? Well I can fix that...
  3:59pm
steve:

tangent here but can anyone point me to the bananafish book? i always hear about it but can never seem to find it, or even any info about it...
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

RIP, shame to lose a great Dubmaster.
  4:04pm
Truth Machine:

Wow, how WFMU has gown down the drain, all you guys do is cater to the lowest common denominator of hipster asshole elitist culture, congrats on achieving a small chunk of HIP credentials only to alienate long time listeners.

I blame people like Brian Turner for all of this, just take a look at this playlist, it looks like a retrospective of this past weeks hipster blog posts mixed with a little bit of the classic pitchfork bottom of the barrel efforts.
  4:05pm
BT:

Hear hear! Just flush on yr way out.
  4:05pm
Human Garbage:

Ah, Truth Machine. You've tried to spook me many times already. At first I was concerned, now I just laugh and continue with the status quo.

SF Spike:

Steve: midheaven.com has a bunch of the later Bananafish mags avail, but I'm guessing that book is long out of print. I think it came out in the mid-90s. It's an anthology of articles from early issues and came with a CD, like all the later mags. Well worth it if you stumble across a used copy.
  4:15pm
Swami:

No, he's right seang, I suck. I should turn off the internet and find my Hall and Oates cassettes. I have been exposed. You shant see the likes of me here post haste.
  4:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Trippy stuff! This is making me think of UbuWeb avant-garde pieces now.
  4:15pm
kamikaze:

Hey, watch them fighting words about Brian Turner -my afternoon partner in crime AND the lifeblood of WFMU. I might have to take you out, Finchley Boy style!! If you don't like what any of us are playing you know you are free to listen somewhere else!
  4:16pm
3puen:

this sounds like john malkovich
  4:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for the backup, Diane!
Can you trace the IP? I'm pretty sure this guy called in to Tom Scharpling last year, in the end begging him for your vast "WFMU Bucks".
  4:18pm
steve:

thanks SF Spike! i have seen individual issues around, mostly just curious about the book... for some reason i have a thing for big comix/zine anthologies.
  4:19pm
3puen:

Hey Truth Machine... Jealous much?
  4:20pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I am forced to listen, A Clockwork Orange style. It's just pure chance that I love it!! :) I'm very lucky..!
  4:22pm
3puen:

you can never please everyone, and who would want to. Even Mother Teresa got Death threats. All the best things are hit and miss. robert altman, woody allen, charles manson. NO ONE likes everything on this station. Whats the alternative? go listen to KISS fm and see how much you like that....
  4:24pm
3puen:

PINK DOTS RULE!!!!!!!
  4:24pm
Marmalade Kitty:

..he truth Machine is not so lucky!
  4:25pm
SF Spike:

Steve: Good luck in your Bananafish hunt! As mentioned, you can try the publisher Tedium House as well. I have a copy in part because a couple of my photos were published in it.
  4:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: I've been stuck in many Clockwork Orange-like media environments before, but once I found great stuff on here, I also love it! I even put fresh adhesive on my eyes and ears when the old stuff wears down.
  4:27pm
dw:

Boogens! Shout out Ananda UK
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@3puen: Let's not give the T f-ing M any more attention than we should, but I think TM yearns for the people Irwin said he replaced back in '74.

"Now, we got the latest Dan Fogelberg album here, so sit tight..."
"You know how the .... ... . .. .. electric"
"HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm so high!"
  4:31pm
SiHV:

This is the happiest day of my life. The day I discovered that I am a hipster.
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

haha...the day I'm a hipster is the day all the hipsters become something else!
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

just saw the Pink Dots on Sunday night in CLE. Killer set.
  4:35pm
Marmalade Kitty:

What's a Hopster..?
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: Someone skilled at home brewing beer, of course.
  4:35pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

a beer snob
  4:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Posted at the same time, DCE! That's a drink for both of us!
  4:39pm
Marmalade Kitty:

A HopHipster..?
  4:40pm
slugluv1313:

holy crap! Gregory Isaacs gone too?!?!? (i am still kinda in a state of shock over Ari Up)
  4:40pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hell yes, I'll drink to that
  4:40pm
Cecile:

Can we play something for Paul the Octopus, too? I thought his story was the sweetest bit of whimsy that brought smiles to everyone.
  4:41pm
Cecile:

You know, some whale songs or something .
  4:43pm
BT:

Someone gave me a CD at the fair of MRI recordings. How's everyone feeliing for that?
  4:43pm
Cecile:

Hey, Brian, did you know about the guys from Dual Plover sending Australian 70s/80s Top 40 hits to song-poem companies? It's hilarious hearing some of them. They picked bands like Skyhooks and Cold Chisel.
  4:44pm
BT:

Yeah! I grabbed that and meant to play. Thanks Cece.
  4:44pm
Cecile:

Just the noises from MRIs? I can dig it.
  4:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: As long as the MRIs contain a lot of that sonic "pinging", I'm fine with it. You can follow up with dentist drill sounds, to shake it up a bit.
  4:44pm
Cecile:

Nice! What cut were you thinking of?
  4:44pm
Xavi:

@BT: it could work. i remember when i got an mri done I liked it.
  4:44pm
Chris from DC:

MRI recordings are fine, just don't make me get in one.
  4:45pm
Cecile:

Xavi, I did, too. It was strangely relaxing. Like I had come home to my electronic momma.
  4:46pm
Cecile:

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
  4:46pm
Xavi:

nice
  4:46pm
Marmalade Kitty:

The great big musical heaven in th sky! As long as we have ears and soul and spirit and records and record players They all visit us here on Earth, as in Heaven! :)
  4:46pm
Cecile:

I hope this version doesn't make Mr. Anderson Angry.
  4:47pm
Cecile:

Can you play "Ego is not a Dirty Word?" The sountrack to my teen years.
  4:47pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I can be beaten, I admit it. Beaten like an egg.
  4:49pm
Cecile:

DCE, wait until you hear what it is.
  4:49pm
Cheri Pi:

I agree with Cecile, Paul the 8-pus deserves the WFMU treatment.
  4:50pm
slugluv1313:

oh no! not Paul the Octopus too! :(
  4:50pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

is that like AC/DC's little brother's band?
  4:50pm
Cheri Pi:

Rose Tattoo is testosterone by any other name.
  4:51pm
fan:

"Even Mother Teresa got Death threats. All the best things are hit and miss. " The Mother Teresa was immoral and unethical. Read C. Hitchen's book "Missionary Position". You might change your mind about that slimebucket Teresa.
I always like the shows the week after the record fair and 'SIngles going steady week". The mix seems odd but great most of the time.
Love your show Brian! Today's is fun, odd and more fun!
  4:51pm
Cecile:

No, it's Lobby Loyde's band. Like Coloured Balls post AC/DC
But they are buds.
  4:51pm
Cheri Pi:

@slugluv1313: -I'm sorry you had to find out this way!
  4:53pm
paul b:

Boy, You don't hear Rose Tattoo on the radio often, nice!
A sound like AC/DC but contemporaries of Radio Birdman I believe.
  4:54pm
Cecile:

I stand corrected, Lobby didnt' play with them until late in their career.
  4:55pm
Cecile:

No, he did in the 70s. He played bass for a while. just wasn't a founding member. Jeez. Get your facts right, C.

Paul B, I bet Diane would play RT for you if you asked nicely.
  5:13pm
Xavi:

this is the music i like to train people to. especially old folks. put in the car and off we go!
  5:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great Metal today Brian!
  5:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Xavi: Some of my friends in college were big metalheads, known around as "the Black Brigade" for their mass of black shirts when together. I told one about the (VW?) commercial with the guy in the car with his boss, but then death metal blares out of his stereo! I told him we should make his car like that, except we would keep it up and communicate with headbangs!
  5:20pm
Cecile:

the maaaaaaan on the Silver Mountain!
  5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Marijuana and carrots! OMFG Yes!
  5:22pm
Cecile:

@matt, that equals Sunday Brunch at Devendra Barnhart's house
  5:23pm
Xavi:

i couldn't believe Devendra was charging $30 at the door when he came a few weeks ago
  5:24pm
Xavi:

only seen him once like 2001 and it was probably $6 to get in
  5:28pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Helping the poor is the work of slimebuckets. Helping the rich is the work of saints
  5:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: LOL!
@Xavi: Devendra's admittedly become a lot more famous since 2001. What kind of audience was he bringing in a few weeks ago?
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Cramps sound like someone asked Mark Mothersbaugh to come up with a three-chord punk song. Not that I mind :)
  5:32pm
Xavi:

@Matt: no idea. didn't go. but i still love his albums. saw him solo also way back. i'm guessing he had a full band this time round.
  5:32pm
BSI:

Laetitia he aint.
But god, it's funny.
  5:33pm
slugluv1313:

@ Cheri Pi -- no problem ! just weird to lose them ALL at once, i guess (alla dem 'dreads in JAH Heaven?!?!?)
  5:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Joe McG! Are you getting this Saluki?!
  5:41pm
Mattif:

Wow! Super funky!
  5:42pm
Mike East:

Been listening all afternoon, but too busy to comment. Great stuff today, BT! A shame about Gregory Isaacs. I just came into possession of two of his records last week. Will have my own tribute to him later in the week.
  5:42pm
Cecile:

I think Pulpo Paul is a dreadlocks octo. His legs look like dreads.
  5:45pm
Joe McG:

@Matt: Yeah, sounds great! I'll be checkin' that one out meself...
  5:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Alert as always to musical opportunities. Nice work! Saluki is indeed a unique soul song.
  5:50pm
slugluv1313:

@ Cecile -- YES! EXACTLY! maybe they all singing together?!?!!?
  5:51pm
Xavi:

it is true: it is so nice to get stoned :)
