  6:46am annie:

the upside is: attending one of the best rummage sales in our region this morning.. collection of linens is a major phenom!
  8:25am Drummer Some:

Wow, Annie. I'm not sure I finished preparing the show by 6:46. Impressive!
  8:47am glenn:

early bird, schmearly bird.
  8:49am glenn:

what are the acoustics like in a cast iron church, one wonders?
  8:49am Drummer Some:

Gotcher red hot worms, right here! Come'n get it. Getcher redhots!
  8:54am Parq:

After four days of trudging into work in perfect weather, we can look forward to a weekend of getting rained on. Que sarah sarah, and no not P. Watcha got for us this week, Dougster?
  8:54am Maggie in Rock Tavern:

traveling through Penn. Dutch country, we saw this sign: "Yard Sale - 6am - 12. No early birds."
  8:55am monica:

mornin', doug! reporting for duty ready, willing, and semi-caffeinated!
  8:56am ndbob:

morning Doug!
  8:57am listener james from westwood:

i'd welcome some rain; the midweek pollen count had me in full-on histamine hell. someday a real rain's gonna come and wash this green-yellow scum off the streets!
  8:58am glenn:

fabio and clay busted 1000 comments yesterday. are we going to beat that today? are we? come on, people, drop and give me twenty (comments).
  8:59am listener james from westwood:

hope all of y'all are enjoying the early (or late) friday, depending on your locale. lotsa labors ahead today, all made easier by the mighty gtds stream!
  8:59am Drummer Some:

Glenn! Parq! Maggie (Mom!)! Mighty Monica! ndbob! and the estimable LJ from Welcome to the clubhouse. Who's taking minutes this week?
  9:00am Parq:

Big ups to Clay, Fab and Juls for what now stands as my favorite FMU show ever. And James from Westwood *is* Tractor Driver.
  9:00am ndbob:

It's freezing here - cloudy, 37, only going up to 45.
  9:00am glenn:

erm. prolly not me.
  9:00am Maggie in Rock Tavern:

can't. have to try to work while forcing myself not to dance.
  9:01am listener james from westwood:

we need a scrivener like scharpling's got. anybody know gregg or pitman shorthand?
  9:03am listener james from westwood:

the julie/clay/fabio musico-comedic sympatico really is the surprise hit of the fmu 2010s. all it took was clay prying open the inscrutable oyster that is fabio during their transitional moments.
  9:05am Drummer Some:

When is Clay Pigeon being invited to the damn White House?!
  9:05am glenn:

whatever happened to north dakota's plans to change their name to southern alberta?
  9:06am ndbob:

hah Glenn - it feels more like northern Alberta now.
  9:08am glenn:

that's pretty farkin' cold.
  9:10am Jack:

good morning all!
  9:11am listener james from westwood:

Would that compel SD to become (or revert to) simply being "Dakota"?
  9:12am Drummer Some:

Hiya Jack. Slip on your parachute and wait your turn...
  9:12am ndbob:

actually a little colder then Edmonton here now
  9:16am still b/p:

Kenny G's White House fashion choice took a Daily Show knock.

Doug - Check the new Library of Congress National Jukebox site yet, with plenty of vintage stuff of interest?
  9:16am glenn:

just be glad you're not in the path of the red river, or the mississippi.
  9:20am ndbob:

The National Jukebox is great.
  9:21am Parq:

James musing on "Dakota" reminds me -- why does everyone call NJ "Jersey"? No one ever says "York" or "Mexico.
  9:23am BodegaMan:

Didn't north dakota try to rebrand as Dakota, as if to draw more visitors...

good morning drummer folk.
  9:25am Drummer Some:

still b/p
The Library of Congress collection is astounding. I need an assistant. Or a third ear. Any volunteers? (for assistant, not ear).
  9:25am ndbob:

Hmm. well Mexico would be ambiguous, just like Dakota is.
  9:26am ndbob:

Of course Doug:)
  9:29am trish:

Wow. (re Library of Congress National Jukebox)
  9:30am Maggie in Rock Tavern:

who blows fallen leaves in May?
  9:30am ndbob:

Check it out Trish - they have posted over 10000 acoustic era Victor recordings so far.
  9:32am Paul Sherratt:

>>who blows fallen leaves in May?
I was wondering the same !
  9:35am jill:

RE: National Jukebox - surely this will become another program that the govt. will wind up cutting funding to in years to come... sorry for my gloomy pessimism this morning all. ~ Debby Downer
  9:35am monica:

love george barnes!
  9:35am listener james from westwood:

The landscapers announced their return to my complex 2 Mondays ago with leafblowers. Hoping that is a one-time wakeup call.
  9:36am Drummer Some:

I posted that George Barnes double disc on Mining the Audio Motherlode a few weeks back. Go here...

http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/mining-the-audio-motherlode/

...and scroll down.
  9:37am listener james from westwood:

The Nat'l Jukebox needs a weekly curated podcast of its treasures, not unlike those of the FMA.
  9:37am ndbob:

Hopefully not Jill - it's a project in association with Sony so presumably they are paying a lot of the costs.
  9:38am trish:

Nice faceted search action on that thing. Left column appears to let you add and x's in the breadcrumb let you remove. Kinda like google image searches..

Admirable endeavour. Er I guess in this case, it's endeavor.
  9:38am Drummer Some:

Paul,
The synagogue next door to me just swept up their massive pile of leaves yesterday. Praise G-d.
  9:39am Drummer Some:

My grandfather worked at the Library of Congress back in the '50s.
  9:40am ndbob:

The UCSB Cylinder Archive is also great - and you can download from their site.
  9:42am trish:

The 'First Time Here?' intro text blurb is a bit bizarre, I think, suggesting we follow the path to find a definition of 'matrix' .. ? Uhh.
  9:43am still b/p:

Yeah, acquisition situation too bad at Jukebox. Sony still holds ownership of the material. "Downloading is not permitted. The authorization of rights holders of the recording is required in order to obtain a copy of the recording." Good luck with that, Library & Sony.

Interesting that disclaimers and warnings about what might be "offensive" in old material are included all over the place.
  9:43am ndbob:

Yep - I spent a couple hours just browsing around.
  9:44am Drummer Some:

All these songs about guns! Proto gangsta rap!
  9:45am ndbob:

I guess they are doing that because many used of the site won't be familiar with pre-1920 material, which is often racially derogatory.
  9:48am ndbob:

Ever hear any narcocorridos? Sort of gangsta polka.
  9:48am Drummer Some:

Arhoolie has several wonderful collections of narcocorridos.
  9:49am Alex in Illinois:

Maybe the people with the leaf blowers are not using them to blow leaves, but instead just to blow-dry the dirt so it becomes dust that they can blow into the air. Blowing dust everywhere seems to be most of what is accomplished with a leaf blower. Maybe we need an alternate name for leaf blowers, like, I don't know, "dust clouders" or something.
  9:49am trish:

It'd be cool if one of the sort options were 'random' which would enable easier browsing within a category.

'Relevance' and 'Title' sorts on 3585 hits of eg, 'Popular music' don't add much and aren't very conducive to browsing. Jukeboxes invite the random shake-up to music lists don't they?
  9:53am still b/p:

It's clear enough why the Jukebox "offensive" disclaimers would be there, but the insistence and abundance of them makes it seem like a slightly nervous and many-discussions-and-meetings sort of CYA & preemption effort, more than just helpful heads-up.
  9:55am ndbob:

Some of the sorts aren't vary accurate - searching on blues takes you to a lot of recordings with "blues' in the title that aren't blues records.
  9:56am Another Paul:

Doug, I notice LOC site allows you to submit playlists. Any possibility of a GTDS playlist turning up on the site anytime soon?
  9:57am ndbob:

I agree still b/p - probably are nervous since it's likely to draw many listeners who are totally unfamiliar with early music.
  10:00am trish:

Fun to combine them. Eg. 'Instrumental' and 'Educational' makes a list of 121.
  10:01am listener james from westwood:

and the "raiders of the lost ark"-style red line zooms across the map to n. africa! fmu offers the best deals around on world travel!
  10:03am Drummer Some:

Paul,
I'll have to investigate that playlist submission feature at LOC!
  10:04am Drummer Some:

The terrific early-recordings record label Archeophone also plasters all their releases with warnings and caveats about "offensive" material.
  10:05am ndbob:

Yep - Archeophone does a great job with their reissues.
  10:14am jill:

R. Crumb and Mac talk about this subject on the Antique Phonograph Music Show back in April...
  10:14am trish:

Some day, 'offensive labels' will have labels to contextualize the morality claims?
Morality police on past morality police?
  10:17am ndbob:

Those were great interviews Jill.
  10:21am still b/p:

Excellent set playing right now.

Went to see Crumb's Genesis illustrations at a museum last weekend, which was impossible to take in in a too-brief visit. Hadn't realized there were scores of comic-style pages, and not just selected scenes.
  10:22am Alex in Illinois:

"Offensive" seems so subjective. What is offensive to one person might not be offensive to another. For example, I am probably the only listener here who finds Jello offensive.
  10:23am Drummer Some:

OK, you're out Alex. That's really taking it over the line.
  10:24am Andy S.:

Man, this track ("Afriquiya") is just other-worldly!
  10:25am trish:

How about a generic 'time travel' warning.
This was obviously pre-ERA. Historians galore could paint all kinds of biased and unbiased pictures for those who want to know more about the context. Click here for more.

Oh, and don't step on any butterflies.
  10:29am listener james from westwood:

@trish: dig the bradbury ref!
  10:29am ndbob:

It would be good if there were articles on the context of some of those recordings.
  10:29am monica:

is anyone else here experiencing buffering probs with winamp? advice appreciated.
  10:29am Rigid Dessert Brigade:

Wigglies go home! Semper stabilus!

Nasty Jello of the Month...really!

Thanks Doug - I see that Blogger is still down, but old posts and links are working.
  10:47am Drummer Some:

Yeah, what the heck is going on with Blogger? Anyone know the story?
  10:48am Drummer Some:

Morning Carmichael!
  10:48am listener james from westwood:

Heard from another Blogger blogger that the system was down, but my old site seems to be working. Rolling brownouts?
  10:51am Alex in Illinois:

Rigid Dessert Brigade!
So I am not alone! Are you also the author of that blog? I never knew there were so many ways to make vegetables into something scarier than the title character of the (original) movie The Thing.
I don't require all my desserts to be rigid. For example, I consider a milkshake or a liqueur to be liquid desserts, and I am fine with them. But wiggly . . .
  10:52am ndbob:

Blogger has been in read-only mode since yesterday afternoon.
  10:53am ndbob:

What blog James?
  10:53am Brian in UK:

Missed registration, homework in the dog. Hello people with two good ears & those who do not take excuses for granted.
  10:57am ndbob:

apparently blogger had a problem with routine maintenance - they took down posts from late Wednesday night - and are restoring those posts.and correcting problems
  10:57am Hugo:

This is just in from Blogger:
Friday, May 13, 2011
We’ve started restoring the posts that were temporarily removed and expect Blogger to be back to normal soon.
Posted by at 06:07 PDT

Note the date ...
  10:58am Drummer Some:

I think this is where Blogger slips that surveillance chip in our back molars when we're not looking.
  10:58am listener james from westwood:

@ndbob: Chris Jones's Son of Bold Venture blog. Rechecked his tweet; he lost a post, actually; site not down, confirming the read-only diagnosis.
  10:59am ndbob:

Thanks James.
  10:59am trish:

Give the Drummer Some inspires geography/cultural expansions and refreshers.

What else opens doors to culture of Comoros, Suriname ... etc. ?
  10:59am listener james from westwood:

@Drummer: Well they are part of Google, after all. (quickly checks for recent "fillings")
  10:59am Hugo:

We lost a Wednesday post, but all the rest is there, as far as I can see.
  11:01am Brian in UK:

@ Paul Sherratt, It's in the post. Apologies DS for cross talking will go direct to Amanda's naughty chair. What's a blag? In this country it's a criminal act like a bank robbery.
  11:02am Brian in UK:

Hugo how was your holiday in old Blighty?
  11:02am Drummer Some:

Trish,
How did you know I just downloaded something amazing from Suriname?

http://tinyurl.com/3qlh7o4
  11:02am annie:

made it back... an hour to spare!
  11:04am trish:

Coincidence. My connecting dots was you mentioning Comoros. Reminded me of a past reference to Suriname. Both cultural firsts for me, at least musically, though I think overall, too.
  11:05am Drummer Some:

Ah Annie!
How was the rummaging? (refer to comment at 6:46 AM)
  11:06am annie:

it was fantastic!!!! loads of goodies for just 20 bucks!! and i got my enamel stew pot!
  11:11am Hugo:

Splendid, Brian! York is a lovely place. We were at the new campus of the University of York, in a so-called "pod" right next to an artificial lake. Less display of royalness in the streets on the actual day than what we would have thought in advance. Bit of a media hype, wasn't it? Of course, we had to check out the Shambles and the Jorvik Centre.
  11:16am Drummer Some:

If you need to get a snack, I would recommend doing so soon. The next set is kinda OMG territory. (Beginning in 6-8 minutes)
  11:16am Brian in UK:

We are not Royalists by any stretch & went for a walk in the bluebell woods on the day, quite beautiful.
  11:16am northguineahills:

Damn fine trio! Always fun on Fridays to flip back and forth b/tn Doug & Scott.
  11:17am Carmichael:

Thanks Doug! I'm off to the de-caffeination room.
  11:27am jesse:

ilaiyaraaja one of my favorites, thanks Doug!
  11:28am Drummer Some:

Why am I not surprised Jessie?!
  11:30am jesse:

yes, very predictably
  11:30am annie:

i LOVE that breathing thing
  11:31am jesse:

have you checked out any of his classical fusion stuff? I have not but am curious based on how good his mashedup pop music is
  11:32am Drummer Some:

Not nearly as interesting as this crazy pop mess.
  11:36am jesse:

oh well, can't expect everything to be great. Wasn't this Wait a minute track on your premium from years back?
  11:37am Ian:

I feel giddy.
  11:39am Carmichael:

Wow, this is such an oddball culture clash. Bollywood/Longines Symphonette/prog rock/pop etc ...
  11:39am Drummer Some:

Jesse,
You win the booby prize. Yes, this was on an old marathon premium! (Winners make pick up their boobies during business hours and are responsible for making the appropriate tax disclosure.)
  11:42am jesse:

wow, thanks Doug.
I always disclose my boobies
  11:44am still b/p:

I made a note of that Sailaja song fo' laytah, and didn't do it justice with my few, less-precise than Carm's, descriptive terms that followed "all over the place:..."
  11:49am annie:

this would be one of those songs that sounds great VERY LOUD!!
  11:51am glenn:

i'm back. what did i miss?
  11:52am Drummer Some:

The slap bass in this always make me think of the incidental music on Seinfeld.
  11:52am annie:

waaay too much to go into glenn..
  11:53am glenn:

apparently i missed george barnes. ironical, that is.
  11:55am Drummer Some:

Glenn,
And I credited you, too, my friend. All hail Glenn, ladies and gents.
  11:56am glenn:

if only you'd play spooky, or lipstick on my collar. then people could really appreciate him. also the first guy to play electric guitar on a bob dylan recording.
  11:59am northguineahills:

Damnnnnnnnnn!!!!
  11:59am ndbob:

Great show Doug!
  12:01pm trish:

Great show Doug. Many thanks.
Glad to learn about the loc.gov juke and browse.
  12:02pm listener james from westwood:

that was one helluva closer for the show. looking forward to hearing this whole 3 hr again via the wonders of the archives!
  12:03pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Doug! Enjoy the weekend.
  12:05pm Drummer Some:
