Listener comments!

  12:07am
cheri:

goodbye woody i hope you have a wonderful summer,,you'll be terribly missed!!
  12:10am
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

good morning.
Woody, I noticed you're absent from the new shows schedule - what will I do on Tuesday mornings then?
  12:15am
Woody:

Well between the bajillion other DJs, the podcasts, the archives, etc. I think you'll be ok :)
  12:17am
Ike:

I advise checking out any Pseu, Liz B., Daniel Blumin, Noise & Syrup, or old Woody archives that you've missed. Among others. I'll probably do that. Or watch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Great show so far tonight Woody!
  12:19am
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

no! it won't be the same!
but we'll try to keep ourselves together. still, too bad, you WILL be missed man...
  12:21am
Ike:

Agreed!
  12:30am
Woody:

No response from "It's Legal"!?!?!? Really?!?!

So wrong. so right.
  12:35am
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

Woody, It's Legal was great, who's behind it?
  12:44am
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

http://www.cherryred.co.uk/el/artists/johnbarry.php - Beat Girl soundtrack, second in the list
  12:46am
Marmalade Kitty:

It's illegalillegalegaleaglelegalegalegal
  1:37am
brycepunk:

Man, that Funtastiklons song was awesome. Why is there no "buy now" option for WFMU? 50/50 cut for you and the band, perhaps? Either way, thanks. That was a great track (that I'll never hear again, sadly)
  1:38am
Woody:

I think there is some sort of link function on the phone apps, but don't think it works for a french boutique press :)
  1:41am
brycepunk:

Yeah, I'm on a desktop mac with no apps, no skills... Maybe I should get some skills. Wanna email me an mp3 of that track and I'll paypal you the cash?
  1:43am
Woody:

Hehe... played it off a giant slab of vinyl out of a giant box set called German Punk & Wave. Thing probably runs over $100, but will be out-of-print soon and knowing the audience for this synth stuff, probably in mp3 land.
  1:45am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

There is a Buy On ITunes button on the iPhone up which is great for countries that have iTunes store available . Believe it Pr not kids, my country doesn't. We can keep a democracy in the middle east but can't have iTunes . The world is unfair
  1:47am
brycepunk:

(I searched iTunes but it never heard of this before) It's comforting to know that some day it may live again for me, and the world. I don't know how you all do it... I listen to the station for hours a night, almost always the best music I've ever heard, and 99% of the time bands I've never heard of.
Thanks again.
  1:52am
Adam in Portland:

Woody, I'm also going to miss your radio presence this summer. Don't be a stranger!
  1:55am
Adam in Portland:

I bought Sun Ra's "Space Probe" this past weekend after hearing that great Moog piece on your show. Thank you, Selectah.
  1:56am
ausmanx:

"democracy in the middle east"??? israel??? you've got to be joking. the iTunes situation is symptomatic... your government is more repressive than china
  1:56am
Woody:

Bryce, its easy for us, or at least me, thanks to music director Brian Turner for putting together an awesome "new bin".

Thanks Adam, I'll still be subbing here and there... hoping a little break might help new angles on doing the show...
  1:59am
Adam in Portland:

Great to hear and yes, a little distance can of course often be great for fresh inspiration.
  2:02am
Adam in Portland:

I love that I can count on leaps like Karp to David S. Ware in your shows, in less than ten moves. John Zorn would be proud imo.
  2:04am
Woody:

Had to do a talkset after Karp...no where to go but noisier after that! Needed a breather for a sec :)
  2:05am
Adam in Portland:

You know it CAN be done and many of us will stick around on WFMU. Hahaha. ;-)
  2:05am
Julie:

this is cooool
  2:06am
Adam in Portland:

Julie: this IS cool! You ARE cool!
  2:07am
Julie:

@Woody New Angles on show=dressing more triangular
  2:07am
Julie:

@Adam why thank you! Upstairs it was steamy hot, but down here a few feet from Woody, it's cool in more ways than one.
  2:07am
Adam in Portland:

Julie: and crab-walking to work?
  2:08am
Julie:

I will refrain from stealing the Angels CD out of his hand.
  2:08am
Julie:

@Adam Crabs walk sideways and lobsters walk straight..and me without my Smothers Brothers records
  2:09am
Adam in Portland:

I'd like to know your impression of Karp. :-)
  2:10am
Adam in Portland:

Hahaha! My mother has a friend who was in a relationship with a young Tommy Smothers.
  2:18am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

@ausmanx I don't want to spoil the party so I won't answer . I'm just asking myself where you get your insights from
  2:18am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Phil Manzanarek
  2:19am
Adam in Portland:

I'm still anxiously awaiting that Karp documentary's release, and on a wholly unrelated note, John Herndon's contributions to 5ive Style were bright hot.
  2:20am
Adam in Portland:

Hey, Yair, nice to see you!
  2:24am
Woody:

Not sure whats up with the Karp doc. I was thinking of 5ive Style the other day. No offense, but those super stiff Chicago post-rock guys weren't meant to play funk :)
  2:25am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Hey Adam - you too man!
  2:28am
Adam in Portland:

No offense taken. Haha. But, thank you. I would certainly not compare them in any way to the elasticity of a single member of the JB's, as but one example, but still love their take on it. I saw a pretty hot live show of the band's in 1995. :-)
  2:32am
Woody:

A lot of those chicago projects from that era are like that. Guys trying to play dub or krautrock or Morricone or Steve Reich :)
  2:32am
Adam in Portland:

I mean, Hamid Drake is my dude, I'm just sayin'.....;-)
  2:34am
Woody:

Definitely NOT talkin' bout Hank err Hamid!
  2:36am
Adam in Portland:

Now I'm realllllly intrigued. You don't think I lump him in with Post-Rockers, do you? Texts with all their lack of tone. Haha.
  2:38am
Woody:

I once was playing Hendrix on the stereo when Hamid was over (roommate was friends with him), and he said he'd been trying to get Ken Vandermark to do Hendrix material with him!
  2:41am
Adam in Portland:

I think that deepens my interest in Drake. Thank you for the anecdote. Maybe he simply needed the influence of a Betty Davis-like figure at that time.
  2:41am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

I met Hamid in February when he played in Tel Aviv with the mighty Albert Beger. aside from being such a killer drummer (really the best I've ever seen), he's such a gentle soul, always smiling, spreading great vibe around. then we went for drinks after the show and he was the cutest ever.

the next day of that festival, he played in the Nicole Mitchell trio and kicked my ass again.wow.
  2:42am
Adam in Portland:

I just hope he loves Ezy Rider as much as I do. Hahaha. J/k. But nit about the love.
  2:43am
Adam in Portland:

Wow! Loving all these Hamid Drake tales.
  2:47am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Adam, we also recorded the Beger-Drake show, it will be released. stay tuned..
  2:50am
Adam in Portland:

Oooof! I cannot wait!! Please keep me posted?
  2:50am
Julie:

I love that Bippp comp
  2:50am
Adam in Portland:

I'd throw my email up on here, but probably not a great idea. Haha.
  2:51am
Julie:

I like this background music
  2:51am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Adam - I suggest you'd go to Albertbeger.com, sign in to his mailing list. or follow http://www.facebook.com/albertbeger
  2:52am
Julie:

@adam no throwing up on the comments board please
  2:53am
Adam in Portland:

Thank you so much, Yair! Will do.
  2:53am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

is Tony Coulter on that island?
  2:54am
Julie:

I wish my show was the circus Woody suggests.
  2:55am
Adam in Portland:

Julie: haha. Not even in the spirit of Nick Cave, Cole Alexander, or GG Allin? ;-)
  2:55am
ausmanx:

before we close, i get my insights from having been in the West Bank for the last two weeks (and China a lot in the last few years). if you're sitting in Tel Aviv I assume you haven't been there, as most Israelis don't go and aren't interested. which is the problem. if you knew what's going on there...
  2:56am
Julie:

@adam maybe in a nightmarey crying clowny kind of way
  2:56am
Julie:

Woody we'll miss you! See you in the fall!
  2:56am
Woody:

As much as I honestly am interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I don't really think a WFMU playlist comment board is really the best venue to address issues in the Middle East :)
  2:59am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Ausmanx - yea, I was there, during my army service. the situation there is horrible, and it's done by the occupation that should have ended years ago, no doubt about it.

I'm saying that comparing to arab dictatorships around me, where they shoot protests, kill gay people and women are considered to be worse then dogs - Israel is a democracy. this is a totally complex situation and if you want I'll be happy to explain both sides of the conflict for you.
but this is really not something you can point a finger at Israel or at the palestines and blame any of them. they are both to blam, and they are both right in the same time. eventually, it's about rooted mutual fear. and money, like always.
  2:59am
Adam in Portland:

Woody: enjoy your pool parties and air bounce castles. Don't fly away. :-)
  3:00am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Woody - I totally agree, I really didn't want to get into this.

have a fun time in your vacation man, you will be missed for all of us I'm sure
  3:05am
ausmanx:

and who conducts the occupation? it's the stupid line about "democracy in the middle east" that started the whole thing and is offensive because the occupation is as bad as anything in the Arab world, with Palestinians treated like dogs. and i don't apologise for addressing the subject, even if WFMU would like its comments board to be filled with triviality
  3:14am
Woody:

I wasn't gonna address this directly ausmanx, but yes the WFMU comments are trivial. That is because this short stream of comments just doesn't work for real discourse. I can't imagine a fully fleshed out argument being made in the short space of the comment box, and more importantly I can't imagine anyone really thinking about anything actually said here.

The trivial comments about halal food, disco, or whatever do seem more appropriate.

I am sensitive to the topic and think the Said/Barenboim talks might be an interesting window to the intersection of music and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
  2:59pm
Looms:

Most catchy show. Enjoy your summer, Woody! :)
