Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 25, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

  3:14pm
jdelz:

  3:14pm
Dynowhite:

  3:14pm
hubba:

I have to agree with drunk Saul, that track was AWESOME
  3:16pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

WFMU: try us sober.

  3:46pm
bill:

bravo, Matt
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@bill That just leaves the rest of Murdoch's empire to give chase to...
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, a cappella choir doing Toto's "Africa". I imagine that could be Andy Bernard and the Cornell Glee Club, their B-side to "Call Me Al".
  3:55pm
Paul Lynde:

"Perfect...we'll be in touch. NEXT!"
  3:57pm
Nick Sakes:

Is that song "Touchy" on a 7"?
  3:57pm
Abe Something:

C'mon! The One Mouth Band! This is insane stuff!
  3:58pm
?:

Hey, BT, where could I find that Charlie Mcalister? On CD anywhere?
  3:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Abe: Yeah, the One Mouth Band was amazing!
I kept trying to place their rhythm--was that the Kinks "Till The End Of The Day"?
  4:00pm
bill:

Matt - I heard "I Can't Explain"
  4:00pm
Juno:

Shut up! You're just noise!!!
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@bill: Have to listen again--I was thinking The Who for the music parts at first, but the vocal rhythm reminded me of "Till The End Of The Day", and then the music seemed like it did as well.
  4:02pm
Johnny Cohen:

Rrrrrowl. That Karen was hot. Have you seen her later pics? Yeah buddy.
  4:02pm
bill:

Maybe Juanito explains it in the intro?
  4:02pm
JT:

HOW ARE THERE TWO 7" WITH PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT KAREN CARPENTER?
  4:03pm
jdelz:

nick, are you asking about "touchy" by d. rider?
  4:05pm
ross:

great show
  4:10pm
Abe Something:

@Matt: Haha, I hadn't noticed The Kinks in there but this show is more than worth a second listen. I'll keep my ears out for that on the next run.
  4:18pm
bill:

Sorry about that
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Well, at least I have a new name for an art punk band: "Floyd the Droid".

@Abe: I've taken 2nd/3rd listens before because of certain snippets in this show, you're in good company!
  4:20pm
Abe Something:

I instantly googled "Floyd the Droid".
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, this cover of "Jet" is from '89! Thanks for bringing out Big Dipper--REALLY love "Jet"! Glad I heard of them now!
  4:23pm
Droll:

Good for Big Dipper turning in a faithful Sir Paul tune! Someone on the YouTubes posted vox and instrumental stems from the original tune -- a fun window into a power pop gem.
  4:24pm
Caryn:

That fridge PSA just reminds me of the schitzophrenic kid in Stephen King's "It" who steals the neighbourhood dogs and kills them by locking them in the discarded fridge at the junkyard. And surely Floyd the Safety Droid could've been given plenty of dialogue? Why tempt us with a droid and then do nothing cool with it, Adventists?!?
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Abe: So did I, after you mentioned it and I finished Googling "Big Dipper band"! Apparently that was an old Commodore 64 game, so the Adventists might still get sued if they didn't take the proper precautions.
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: It's *called* the Mind's Eye! I wished they developed the robot character more myself, but maybe there's more, in a 97-episode story arc of 15-30 sec PSAs! Anyway, what YOU can imagine is much more enthralling. "The more you know.....fromtheSeventhDayAdventists".
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! I think this one oughta be called a "Speed Dub"!
  4:33pm
Paul Lynde:

so how bout them world series?
  4:34pm
Charles:

I want the Simpsons back dammit!
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I think he's talking about "Murdoch"...

The split 7" with Nat Roe? You've played this before, I LOVE this! I remember this one now!
  4:45pm
Caryn:

@Matt: I actually wonder if the "tempt them with the robot, but deny gratification" is supposed to be some intentional religious lesson for kids from the Adventists...
  4:46pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

yeah, you know those religious types and their temptations.
  4:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Would be interesting if that was their intention! But was that directed at kids or parents? Surely they weren't telling kids to go near old refrigerators and shut the doors. Oooh, another religious weird-sell!
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

When I first heard about "420/Apr 20", I was wrongly told that was the police radio code for marijuana possession--not true. But, that was funny because my "favorite" police code was already "402--abandoned refrigerator"! And Apr 2 (4/02) is my birthday, but I never thought of it like that!
  4:53pm
glenn:

happy belated birthday. or happy early birthday works too.
  4:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

I imagined what would later become a Reno 911! type scenario--a police car urgently responds to "a 402", sirens blaring. Then he arrives at the side of the highway with another cop already there, staring at an abandoned fridge. "Well, what should we do with it?" "I don't know..."
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks glenn! I'll split the difference and call it a belated half-birthday (Oct 2)!
  4:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Your MST3K Bulletin of Today: "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" (1962) is in the public domain and available for free download at archive.org...
  5:01pm
Segway Lightburst:

to these post phd ears you do the best music show of all.thx for all the great sound moments
  5:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

OMFG - Stop The Presses!!! They actually have "MANOS HANDS OF FATE" posted now!! They didn't last time I looked for it!!! Man oh man this is turning out to be a great day!!

http://www.archive.org/details/manos_the_hands_of_fate
  5:04pm
Mike East:

Matt - those are two of my favorites. I'd miss the riffing if I was just watching the movie, though. They're so good!
  5:05pm
bill:

I highly recommend "TBTWD" for Halloween viewing. Cheap, gory, funny and incredibly twisted.
  5:10pm
glenn:

flute in rock music? discuss.
  5:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: I'd never seen the entire Manos, just clips from a film class, so I'm excited about that one! Glad we have some wretched film fans!
@bill: I've had that one DLed a few years now, good idea!
  5:10pm
Caryn:

Oh, TBTWD, true awesomeness... (as is Manos, but I think TBTWD just edges it out in some regards).
And Matt, maybe they were hoping the infidel children would shut themselves into fridges... Best get rid of unbelievers, surely.
  5:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Reefer Madness", anybody? That occasionally airs on movie channels, never pass up the opportunity, even though I have the DVD (colorized, reefer smoke colorized into bright colors, guy from MST3K doing a commentary track!)
  5:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Good point, a "killer" idea! They can sell that advice to the Talibans of the world. I've never seen "The Wicker Man", so I'm going to watch that as a genuinely scary Halloween movie, and even it out with bad horror like that!
  5:15pm
glenn:

i worked at colorization many years ago. ask me how many times i've seen it's a wonderful life. not to mention night of the living dead.
  5:16pm
bill:

You colorized Night of the Living Dead? How could you?!?
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Another golden nugget/artyfact...this is the distinctive opening riff I instantly recognize, but still can't place the band or title without a prompt.
  5:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn,bill: I don't blame glenn, it's probably "Ted Turner and his box of crayons", to quote Mr. Welles.
  5:17pm
Caryn:

Oh, "Reefer Madness". Taped it off tv a couple of years ago. And I so recommend "The Wicker Man", it is truly fabulous (well, the original, not the "bad horror" Nic Cage version - although "No, not the bees! Aagh, they're in my eyes!" is hilarious, so thanks, Nic).
And this is my fave Status Quo track (actually, probably the only one I truly like beyond kitchy appeal).
  5:18pm
Caryn:

Oh, Glenn "was just following orders"...
  5:19pm
Calle Nordstrom:

Caaaarrrryyynnn !!!!! caryn!!!!
  5:20pm
Caryn:

Calle!!!
BTW, anyone else seen "They Saved Hitler's Brain"? That is some hilariously bad horror.
  5:20pm
glenn:

we called it "the evil place". or the colour factory, but evil place was better. it was actually a pretty great job for us students.
  5:22pm
bill:

"The Evil place" - sounds like it would make a great movie!
  5:23pm
Caryn:

Glenn, I'm sure there's a horror story waiting to be written there. Seriously, "the evil place", a group of student, an evil Ted Turner...
@Matt: are you going to be watching the theatrical cut or director's cut of "The Wicker Man"?
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Um...whatever's on my Netflix cue--do they mention the difference in the (1973) version? Or, maybe it's one of those dual-sided DVDs with one cut on each side. I haven't sent for it yet, is there a better version?
  5:28pm
glenn:

i got to watch a lot of great movies. the problem was that you had to watch some of them many, many times, so i have seen both i.a.w.l. and n.o.t.l.d. well over 100 times each. i am inured to zuzu's petals, believe me.
  5:28pm
bill:

1973 version of Wicker Man includes the Rod Stewart soundtrack
  5:31pm
Caryn:

@Matt: Well, both versions are good. The main difference is the beginning of the movie, which has a lot of extra stuff in the director's cut, and then there's some extra bits and pieces later on in the film (though those are more minor, like more close-ups of snails having sex etc.) . Since the director's cut was just dug out from under a highway (literally) a decade back, the theatrical cut is more prevalent. Either way, you get a good movie (I actually prefer the start of the theatrical cut, but like the later additions of the director's cut).
  5:33pm
bill:

So glenn who decided things like what color to make Johnny's shirt?
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woooo! Sherpas, Gurkhas or Punks, don't mess with Nepalis!
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Thanks Caryn! Nice to know! I'll see if the director's is at least available.
  5:34pm
Caryn:

@Matt: also not sure what versions are available on R1, since I have the R2 2-disc set with both versions, commentaries, documentaries etc. Any North Americans reading this want to comment?
  5:35pm
glenn:

well, there was researchers and art directors. they would study colour films and photos and posters and sort of hash it out. it was actually a very interesting process.
  5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Caryn, part 2 of 97+!!!
How about the "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" version of that PSA? "DON"T STICK YO HANDS IN THE LAWNMOWER! WHAT ARE YA SHORTIES, STOOPID?!!"
  5:38pm
Caryn:

@Matt: lol! Also, the makers of the lawn mower PSA must have hated "The Happening".
  5:38pm
Caryn:

Ooh, I love this song. Awesome lyrics!
  5:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, the previous one is like if the Happy Flowers did a track about cheese! I presume this Peter Laughner is a lost 70s gem?
  5:39pm
glenn:

baby's on fire - two chords, many, many hours of listening pleasure.
  5:40pm
Burnout:

Oh man, turn it UP!
  5:40pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Is that PSA available anywhere? It's great. It's grating. It's alot of things
  5:42pm
Caryn:

I occasionally sing "Baby's On Fire" when getting ready to go to work in the morning... A lost 70s gem, Matt, but a version of it was in "Velvet Goldmine" so I think some people got acquainted with it that way.
  5:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I can play the solo, but only in my head.
  5:47pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Hey BT, I know this is an old question, but I was stuffing record fair stuff when you played it. Q: Did you play "Fox on the Run" slightly faster than 45rpm? It sounded ever-so-slightly faster than normal. Or am I just imagining things...
  5:47pm
bill:

Ricardo, how about in your Cordoba?
  5:48pm
glenn:

http://mp3.rapidlibrary.com/mp3.php?file=979165&song=baby's+on+fire
  5:48pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Exxxellent! Like rich, Corrinthian leather
  5:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Yes, Ray Davies probably wrote it because he did a demo for "I Go To Sleep", Julie just played that on her "All Kinks" show. Good catch, didn't notice their riff on that tune at first.
  5:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Red Asphalt, shout out to Harrisburg!
  5:51pm
glenn:

or this link has the whole album. http://punknotprofit.blogspot.com/2009/03/peter-laughner-take-guitar-player-for.html
  5:52pm
