  Tue. 12/6/11 3:06am Marmalade Kitty:

  Tue. 12/6/11 3:08am fred:

Good morning Julie, David, Cheri and MK.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:09am Julie:

Hello children of the night
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:09am Julie:

Or the day pretending it's 3am
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:09am Julie:

Sorry, there will be no Muppets
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:12am other beaker:

Meep Meep! :(
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:12am cheri:

well julie time for me to split,,i'll see you on efd's show i hope.. bye!
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:14am Julie:

Love Beaker. he is my soulmate
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:14am Julie:

Goodnight Cheri
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:19am ausmanx:

evening all. "hew" is a word used not nearly often enough. can one "hew" anything other than wood?
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:23am Caryn:

Hello all! The absence of Muppets saddens me... Well, at least we had Beaker here for a while, and he is one of my faves.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:27am Julie:

Dum Dum has a tendency to make stuff up. This is a muppet free zone. At least tonight.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:28am Caryn:

Well yeah, you can't go by Dum Dum. But the general absence of Muppets in everyday life kinda saddens me...
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:29am Julie:

@Caryn true! I enjoyed the new movie.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:30am Caryn:

It hasn't opened here yet, but I'm certainly gonna be in line when it does.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:34am Julie:

The only muppet right for this show is Mad TV's Emo, look him up on youtube sometime
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:34am Caryn:

Trying desperately to stay awake for your show, Julie, because for once I'm home when it's on. But I've slept less than 4 hours, and feel the sleep coming on, so I may slip away at some point. Especially as in 7.5 hours I'll have to start dancing, and I'll need some energy for that.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:36am Julie:

oooh dancing! Well make sure to come back for the archive :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:37am Caryn:

Damn straight! I'm gonna be cranking up some WFMU and shaking my groove thang. Or some such thing...
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:38am other david:

Ditto, looking forward to the movie

Also it's worth following the #GOPMuppetHearings hashtag, it's got a lot of laughs after a certain, large, US network aired a piece comparing the Muppets to Communists.

Got a couple of hours sleep last night, house alarm woke me up, someone tried to get the front door open, fun fun!
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:41am fabio:

you know, it's National Punch Marty Balin in the Mouth Day
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:44am Caryn:

@fabio: aww, why?
@other david: yes, I'm sure my decision to participate in the dancing demonstration today is a direct result of being indoctrinated by the leftist Muppets since childhood :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:45am ausmanx:

jimbo actually died on my birthday. which i'm quite pleased about...
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:48am Sam:

Good evening everyone. You may call it a "muppet free show", but there sure is a lot of muppet chatter on the comments board!
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:49am Julie:

The year and everything?
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:51am ausmanx:

yeah, so i suppose i could be the reincarnation. except i'm no fan of the Doors, and this is the worst Gloria i think i've ever heard! i only ever related to them in Apocalypse Now...
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:52am Julie:

  Tue. 12/6/11 3:52am Caryn:

no-one of interest to me was killed or born on my birthday... the friggin' Madden brothers from Good Charlotte were apparently born on the same day as me, which I'm definitely less than pleased about... and over the years, my birthdays have seemed to coincide with terrorist attacks and natural disasters... but I do share my birthday (if not year) with Douglas Adams and Nina Hagen, so that kinda makes up for the damn Maddens
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:52am Julie:

I don't even remember which song they used in that movie
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:53am Caryn:

@Julie: "The End"
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:54am ausmanx:

yep, magnificent there, i have to admit...
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:55am Julie:

oops thought that was a request..I remember that now. Only saw it once.
  Tue. 12/6/11 3:58am Marmalade Kitty:

I love Celebration Of The Lizard.. the bonus track on the reissued waiting for the sun 17 mins long!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:00am fred:

Same here, I don't know of anyone sharing by birthday. Not that I ever tried to find out. The only "event" I know of is that the Twin Peaks pilot originally aired on my birthday.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:02am Julie:

@MK what's the track?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:03am jamesie:

I was thinking about Celebration of the Lizard, I had that album - I knew it was not their best at the time but still enjoyed it.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:03am Dave B:

Good evemorning Julie and folks.

fxo played a remix of some Doors track Mon morning that was really kinda neat! I'm back to slumber land, but will be listening.

Have a great day/night!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:05am Julie:

Goodnight Dave, will have to check that out!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:05am Dave B:

Oh birthday wis, no one good. But the Beatles first landed in NYC one year to the day ahead of mine
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:06am Marmalade Kitty:

track 16 on waiting for the sun: celebrattion of the lizard (an experiment/work in progress)
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:07am Julie:

@MK ooh I'll have to get that
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:08am Caryn:

@fred: based on when the pilot aired, I can tell you that you share your birthday with a lot of people doing classical music, but also with people like Julian Lennon and Biz Markie. And over they years, people like Pablo Picasso and Laura Nyro have died on your b-day. And they do celebrate Buddha's birthday on your birthday, so that's nice.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:09am Sam:

Isn't it a weird coincidence that Jesus just happened to be born on Christmas? :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:10am fred:

@Caryn: Biz Markie and Buddha? That's kinda cool.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:10am Marmalade Kitty:

Julie, I can send it to you if you like
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:10am Julie:

My birthday is forever JFK assassination day, but I was born years later
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:11am other david:

Wow - I'm surprised at how many Doors songs I'm still able to sing/mumble along to, I havent listened to a Doors album in years

Was an obsessive fan in my terrible teens :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:11am Julie:

MK yes please!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:11am Caryn:

@Julie: are you gonna be doing one song per every album or something, because it's kinda looking like that
@fred: yeah, but of course I'm totally basing this on the "Twin Peaks" thing, so the date could be completely off
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:12am Julie:

@Caryn Yup!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:13am Julie:

I'll have to fill in the years later none of these LP's have that on them
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:14am Sam:

Julie, are you sure you had nothing to do with the JFK assassination?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:16am Julie:

I'll never tell. Sorry about that, MP3 just cut off like that :p
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:16am jamesie:

Riders is listening to American Forces Radio and Television Service in my siesta in Athens 1968
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:17am Caryn:

@Julie: tough break with the assassination, my birthdays have coincided e.g. with the Madrid train bombings and the whole Fukushima earthquake/tsunami/nuclear accident thing
@Sam: hey, "Red Dwarf" already proved that JFK actually assassinated himself after some time travel, so Julie is exonerated
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:18am Julie:

yay Red Dwarf reference. "This is mine, and this is mine, and this is mine, and this is mine" -- The Cat
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:19am Caryn:

-Step up to red alert!
-Are you absolutely sure, sir? It does mean changing the bulb.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:20am Julie:

and Clare Grogan!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:22am Caryn:

hells yeah, Clare Grogan! and since Chris Barrie guested on "The Young Ones", I feel some nice music connections from that direction too
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:27am Caryn:

@fred: your birthday is also International Draw a Bird Day, so now you have an activity lined up for every future b-day party ;)
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:30am Caryn:

Ann-Margret was hot in this scene, although the baked beans and chocolate kinda went OTT. I just wanna know what Ken Russell was always on?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:30am Julie:

Draw a bird day!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:31am Caryn:

@Julie: I know! Who knew?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:32am other david:

Oh dear, got up with the intention of putting on a pot of Earl Grey tea, had a last minute change of heart, got out the hot chocolate to put in a cup. Put hot chocolate into the tea pot instead.

Now all I have to do is pour my hot chocolate on my breakfast..
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:33am Caryn:

You could claim this as your Ken Russell tribute, since he did die recently
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:35am Caryn:

Anyone ever do that "synch up DSotM with The Wizard of Oz" thing and see if this really does line up with the Scarecrow's first appearance?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:35am Julie:

@OD too funny
Tue. 12/6/11 4:36am Brick Van Dee:

@Caryn I don't think Russell was ever "on" anything, He was just an excitable boy. I love his stuff, and his casting of Ann-Margret was inspired I think!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:37am Julie:

I haven't tried that, I don't have Wizard
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:37am G.I. Morrison:

Julie, The Doors' "Gloria" first appeared in 1983 on 7" (US; Billboard #71) & 12" (UK, Australia, etc) and on the collection of 1968-1970 live recordings 'Alive, She Cried'.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:38am Caryn:

@Brick: There's an expression in Finnish called "syntymähumala" which means you're "born drunk". I like to think of Ken Russell that way. A natural buzz on all the time...
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:40am Caryn:

I'm loving the Moody Blues album title. Did they ever find that chord, I wonder?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:41am ausmanx:

wasn't Ann-Margret ALWAYS kinda hot?
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:42am Julie:

I think Morrison was born drunk. @Aus YES
Tue. 12/6/11 4:44am Brick Van Dee:

@Caryn I'll remember that. Not sure I can pronounce it though! Did you know he once planned a musical version of Dracula, with Fleetwood Mac doing the tunes and Mick himself as Vlad
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:45am Caryn:

@ausmanx: well, yeah, but a lot of people point to that scene I think because she is writhing around on a bed in a silver jumpsuit made of netting and just caressing herself all over.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:45am pierre:

Bonjour Julie !
Checking in, feeling a wee bit late over here…

Bonjour listeners extraordinaires !
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:46am Julie:

Bonjour Pierre!
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:47am ausmanx:

yeah, but don't we all writhe around in silver jumpsuits some of the time? she also made a film called KITTEN WITH A WHIP which wins the award for best title ever ...
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:50am Dave B:

I think Ann Margret was born hot. Why even Ann Margrock was hot, if cartoons are your thing
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:50am Caryn:

@ausmanx: well of course we do, but not as alluringly as Ann-Margret. "Kitten with a Whip" is an awesome title, which automatically makes me think of Emma Peel in her Hellfire Club ensemble.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:53am other david:

I love this show, and I love this demented comments board.

You're all awesome. That is all.
Tue. 12/6/11 4:53am Brick Van Dee:

Emma Peel in the Hellfire episode is one of the best things EVER TO HAPPEN. Though I have a friend who prefers the one where she dresses as Robin Hood.
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:54am Julie:

@OD :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:56am Dave B:

I'm on the fence if Ann Margaret got typecast for writhing around in stuff. From "The Swinger" 1968

  Tue. 12/6/11 4:57am Julie:

She was in chocolate before Carole Laure or Karen Finley
  Tue. 12/6/11 4:58am ausmanx:

caryn, don't be modest about your silver jumpsuit! but now i'm starting to imagine a catfight between A-M and Diana Rigg... and I'll be back in a little while...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:00am Gavin.:

sorry i'm late miss Julie. Aww, I see you did a whole Doors set! Defo gonna have to catch up on this one.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:00am Julie:

Hi there Gavin!
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:03am other david:

Diana Rigg was one of my first big crushes, years ago they used to show re-runs of The Avengers here, late on Saturday nights, I used to stay up, thoroughly confused by what the hell was going on but transfixed nevertheless :)

I love how the discussion has gone, roughly, Muppets -> Red Dwarf -> Ken Russell -> Anne-Margret -> Diana Rigg
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:03am Caryn:

Some Ann-Margret over the years: http://dazzlingdivas-ladivas.blogspot.com/2011_03_27_archive.html
Emma Peel as "Queen of Sin" (come on, her name at the club makes the episode even more awesome): http://www.imagesofsexywomen.com/actress/emma-peel-the-queen-of-sin
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:06am Dave B:

I wonder if Elwyn would consider AM a "feisty faker"
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:07am other david:

Caryn you've just sent ausmanx away for even longer :P
Tue. 12/6/11 5:07am Brick Van Dee:

Peter Wyndgarde was great in that Avengers episode too. I always wanted a voice like his!
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:10am Caryn:

"The Avengers" had awesome leading ladies (well, I could give or take Linda Thorson): Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Joanna Lumley (in "The New Avengers"). And all 3 also Bond girls! I always thought that if Bond had to marry someone, of course the only woman who could get him to marry would be Emma Peel!
@Brick: yes indeed. I always loved Wyndgarde. And he looks way better without a moustache. Also loved him as Number 2 on "The Prisoner". That voice saying the great dialogue...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:10am pierre:

oh Emilie Simon !? it's been a long time…
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:13am Julie:

Whose brilliant idea was it to have Bond get married anyhow?
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:13am other david:

I like the fact that Diana Rigg didnt just play the role of a strong female character, she was one in reality too - going on strike when she found out she was getting paid less than the camera man and her first words to Patrick Macnee were apparently "I'm a Lesbian", just in case he got any ideas.
Tue. 12/6/11 5:15am Brick Van Dee:

@Caryn Linda Thorson was actually my favburite! Thinking about those eyes, and those culottes, I'm getting a bit light-headed.... Also I loved it when Liz Frazer was in the "Girl From Auntie" episode.
@Julie It was Ian Fleming's, natch!
Tue. 12/6/11 5:16am fred von helsing:

ordinarily I'd be front and center in the unhinged idolisation of diana rigg but, well, it's a long independence day weekend here and there's been a series of tragic drinking accidents. nonetheless the speakers are on and you're comin' thru five by five, so carry on, Mlle. DJ :-D
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:17am Caryn:

It's spooky how identical to Diana Rigg her daughter looks. Although I suspect some Rigg fans liked it when the daughter did all the lesbian sex scenes on "Tipping the Velvet".
@Brick: I think Linda is underrated, but not as good as the other 3. I just think the type of character she played was not as appealing to me.
Tue. 12/6/11 5:21am Brick Van Dee:

I didn't know Diana Rigg had a daughter! I may have to investigate...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:24am pierre:

ok James Bond topic, i'm totally useless.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:29am Caryn:

I wish I could recommend the totally bizarre old Bond/Goldfinger parody movie where the agent took his orders from a couple of talking white mice and had to stop a plot to blow up the UN with an exploding golden LP, but I have no clue what the name of the movie is.
Tue. 12/6/11 5:31am Brick Van Dee:

@Caryn That sounds brilliant! For another mouse-based spy parody, try the British cartoon Danger Mouse.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:32am pierre:

i hope the little goth girl is still playing the piano, as she does it pretty well.

@ Brick Van Dee & Caryn : Or the french/parody version OSS 117, extremely funny.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:33am Sam:

I used to love Danger mouse! Were they the same people that made Count Duckula also?
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:35am Caryn:

@Brick: some Rigg jr. for you: http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/celebs-on-sunday/2009/05/03/rachael-stirling-i-swear-a-lot-and-i-like-cake-i-m-not-a-diva-115875-21316071/
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:37am Caryn:

The fact that Diana Rigg's daughter could've been Vesper Lynd (really the only other Bond girl to affect Bond as much as his wife) is interesting.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:37am Julie:

Wow. But she kinda lacks the charm, at least in the still. Susan Sarandon's daughter is pretty hot too.
Tue. 12/6/11 5:37am Brick Van Dee:

@Sam They were! Cosgrove and Hall. Mark Hall died just recently actually.
@Pierre OSS 117 sounds really interesting.
@Caryn Rachael is quite a looker, but she's no Diana. Seems like a good sort though!
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:38am other david:

Caryn - my god, I didnt realise she looked that much like her mother, that *is* spooky.

More of Le Carré style spy fiction fan myself, Ingrid Pitt actually had a small role in the BBC's adaption of Smiley's People.

I still havent watched the big screen adaption of Tinker, Tailor - a lot of fans of the Beeb adaption & book are highly critica and the trailer looked all wrong - which has put me off.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:38am Caryn:

@Julie: yeah, not the best photo of her, but it does show the similarity in facial features
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:40am Caryn:

@od: I hear the movie is good. It's just that the Beeb adaptation with Alec Guinness was so good, I think it's hard for people to be objective and take the movie on its own terms, not comparing it to the other version.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:41am ausmanx:

gee, do you like OSS 117, Pierre? i did the subtitles for those, and maybe the humour doesn't translate! moving onto Le Carre seems a bit serious, though, people!
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:41am pierre:

@ Brick Van Dee : it made by and with the same director, and the same actor as this The Artist movie. I don't know if translated it keeps its dark self-french humour, but its worth a vision. 2 movies made so far, the second it very great.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:42am Julie:

I think the director and his wife (in the Artist) were there when I went to Telluride. The movie was good.
Tue. 12/6/11 5:43am Brick Van Dee:

@pierre I was just reading about "The Artist" the other day, it sounds great. The only French comedy I know is Tati, but as it's physical comedy it "translates" perfectly...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:44am other david:

Caryn - exactly! I'll probably get it when it comes out on DVD and give it a chance. I do hope they try and tackle "The Honourable Schoolboy", it would be a clean slate since the Beeb couldnt afford to film it with Alec
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:47am Caryn:

WIth all the talk of Danger Mouse and translation difficulties, I'm reminded of the weirdness of "Magic Roundabout" and of how all the psychedelia was thanks to the new scripts written when they transferred the show from France to Britain. All thanks to Emma Thompson's dad! Anyone seen the Magic Roundabout movie "Dougal and the Blue Cat"? All about a cat who lives on the moon, loves jazz, and has plans for garden domination... Awesome.
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:49am other david:

Heh, re-runs of the Magic Roundabout used to make a very fitting end to a late Saturday night out on the tiles :)

Never did get to see the movie, but with a plot line like that, how can I resist!
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:49am pierre:

@ ausmanx : yes i loved it, it's pretty rare to find moviethat makes fun of french like this over here.

@ Brick Van Dee : Jacques Tati is a master, a true artist of the cinema, i love him very very much.

@ Julie : it's totally possible, after their promotion tournée, they could have needed vacation. Thanks for Bananarama… :)
Tue. 12/6/11 5:50am Brick Van Dee:

@caryn I used to watch the Blue Cat film constantly as a kid. I'm from Lancashire so my own accent was a bit like Buxton's...Until I moved to London and lost it that is...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:52am Caryn:

The movie also has a great jazzy soundtrack, and is even more out there than the series. And on a related note, the "Magic Roundabout" title music has always creeped me out. It's like the music that would accompany some twisted killer dressed in circus gear. Like Pennywise the Clown in "It" or something...
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:53am Marmalade Kitty:

wowza, just realized that was a Bananarama Pistols cover!? I was hearing it but it didn't figure somehow :)
  Tue. 12/6/11 5:53am Julie:

@MK isn't it awesome!

As for the Oz/DSOTM sync-up, yes, seen it several times and it always never fails to completely blow my mind. http://vimeo.com/333721
Tue. 12/6/11 3:15pm Van in Dallas:

Totally agree Julie - just heard you say how Ann's singing voice was very reminiscent of Toyah...that was my first thought upon hearing that song as well!
Tue. 12/6/11 3:48pm Van in Dallas:

Another enjoyable show in the books. Thanks as always for your efforts Julie.
Fri. 12/9/11 11:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Listened to the show later on Tuesday, but just gotta express my joy in the comments! The Birthday Massacre was great; first time I heard of Forthcoming Fire, Victorian Parents and Impressions of Winter. First time hearing "Get It On" by Blondie! NOT the first time I heard Bananarama singing the Sex Pistols (courtesy of the last Valentine's show!)

Great show once again, Julie!
Sat. 12/10/11 12:02am Matt from Springfield:

I was confused at first why "fabio" (@3:41, whether FMU's Fabio or not) said "you know, it's National Punch Marty Balin in the Mouth Day"; but then once I heard the Jefferson Airplane song "The Other Side of This Life" at that point in the show, I suddenly recognized it: THAT was the song they were playing in the film "Gimme Shelter" at Altamont!

When the first significant Hell's Angels fight broke out, one of them punched Marty on stage, interrupting the song. So I looked up Altamont and sure enough: Dec 6 1969, it was the anniversary of that that day. So whether it was a coincidence or not, you happened to play that JA track on the anniversary of Altamont and someone very subtly pointed that out! What an astonishing puzzle and solution!

Bananarama Pistols cover was pretty funny ^_^
