What's this on the chair, ah disgusting. That Tuesday class is the pits.

Mr. Smith, you seem to have a good handle on this unit. (As usual.)

But...but...my mid-term had only one question...

1. What does GTDR stand for?

And I stayed up ALLLLLL night studying for that.

@Listener James from Westwood
Funny coincidence. That story about wedding cookies in Pittsburgh was published in the New York Times THE SAME DAY Jessie and I decided to move to the Steel City! We took it as some kind of sign.

No wedding invites yet, however.

The next "sign" we received occurred a few days later during a visit to Pittsburgh (arranged by Jessie's future employer). We went to the local food coop to check out the scene and the first person we see coming out of the place was wearing a WFMU t-shirt. I almost started crying.

Yes, of course, THAT is what bugs me about it. Thank yor for culling the meaning from my rant.
  10:01am Wendy del Formaggio:

Doug, back to your story about seeing an FMU shirt in Pittsburgh: back in the mid-90s, even before the live audio stream, I made friends with a guy up here in VT because he had an FMU shirt on, and in the local co-op, too! Hmm, maybe it's the same guy! He trolls the nation's co-ops in FMU shirts. haha.

  10:04am Wendy del Formaggio:

You're right! It is the same co-op. My co-op FMU shirt friend was (maybe still is) close friends with former regular volunteer Howie. And he still lives around here. But I guess he could have been visiting Pittsburgh...
  10:04am Mark T in VT:

I have a wfmu t-shirt on about 98% of the time when not at work, and sometimes at work. Even have a couple I use for jammie shirts. But I was not a listener before the internet stream since I am not in the broadcast area.

And a Huckleberry Houuuund Dog Howdy, Doug and everyone. We made it to Friday.
  10:46am still b/p:

Saw Bombino the other night. Wondered if he'd have concerns about fresh developments near his home region, but he had little to say other than "Merci" to an enthusiastic audience.
  10:46am Hugo:

@trs: It's more because the Tuaregs are ethnically very different from the black majority population.
  10:47am glenn:

yesterday's opening day games set some interesting and a little obscure records. the longest opening day game, won by my blue jays, and it was the first o.d. to have five pitchers throw more than seven innings and give up less than two hits.
  10:47am kat330:

@Carm: Just in time for the "naked woman"?
  10:47am Brain in KU:

Doug/ndbob I was thinking of the single CD Song of the Crooked Dance. Thanks for correction.

A lot of the people in Mali now have drifted south from Libya.
  10:48am Dave Hersh:

Orioles and Mets play in June, where y'at on returning for that one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Around the age of three, my adenoids were so swollen, they compress my auditory nerves. I wrote about it (sorta) here:

  10:50am Hugo:

@ngh: Answer from my Malawian contact:

"It was changed in 2009 coz Bhingu decided that Malawi was now "developed" and thus the rising sun was no longer apprpriate. So we got a boiled egg instead."
  10:50am Van in DC:

@glenn - oh that game finally ended? :) I watched a lot of it into the 15th I think it was, then had to leave.
  10:50am Matt from Springfield:

Hi all!
In and out for a while here, but I'm enjoying this folk set a LOT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Good greetings, Carmichael. And hey to you, too, Northguineahills.
  10:51am kat330:

Thanks for the link, Doug. I imagine both of our experiences heightened our auditory senses.
  10:52am northguineahills:

That's pretty funny, Hugo, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Matt from S!
  10:52am Van in DC:

What @Matt from Springfield said! Enjoying a lot! Doug, you are actually just killing it today. Terrific show.
  10:53am Brain in KU:

There is a lovely Bulgarian cheese called Serine. (Sey ree nay?) Either sheep or cow. Stored in brine tastier than Feta. Yum.
  10:53am Matt from Springfield:

Last week or the week before I was listening to the stream after the (shortened) show, and there was a song with fascinating Scottish-like vocals and meter--I eventually found through a lyric search it was "Fair Flower of Northumberland". Child number NINE in fact, so it's old! Any clue who might have been singing that?
  10:53am Matt from Springfield:

And hi there Doug, Van!
  10:54am Dave Hersh:

He is ACTUALLY killing it... not like when he ONLY SEEMS TO KILL IT, BUT LET'S US DOWN... HAHA... ALWAYS kills it, agreed?
  10:54am jm:

love harrow & the harvest...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from S
That was Dick Gaughan!
  10:55am ::JT::

Third. I didn't think you could top the previous "old shit" set but this one is bringing back a lot of fond memories...
  10:55am Van in DC:

Hi there Matt!
  10:57am listener james from westwood:

ah, this piano riff always gives me chills.
  10:58am joe:

What a beautiful sound that was. It could have been the harrowing subject matter and it still would make me feel good.
  10:58am Brain in KU:

If Lord Buckley were alive to hear Doug he might have said 'When he laid it down, it stayed there'.
  10:58am paul b:

Good Lord the British are a strange and dour lot (Foggy Dew), but hypnotized I listen. Oh Gillian Welch now, OK.
  10:59am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks so much Doug!
I need to look for his stuff (I always like it better when Scottish/Northern folk is "barely" in English :)
  10:59am Brain in KU:

paul b where do you think you got all your folk songs from?
  11:02am joe:

Doug I love the fact that I can go from your show to Steinski what a great mix.
  11:03am kat330:

@Doug: Your search for "Sugar" reminds me of a more recent search for something haunting I heard and didn't catch title or artist. Finally found it though -- Um Canto De Afoxé Para O Bloco Do Ilê (Ilê Ayê) -- heard at this link: http://www.eclectipundit.com/2008/03/ile-aye-caetano-veloso.html
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Joe
When I first realized I could broadcast on this stream, my first thought was to bring back Steinski's old show.

Hey there Paul B.
  11:07am Matt from Springfield:

Man, "Blues In Orbit" is slick. Makes me want to star in a 60s movie, in a sequence where I'm sneaking around at night...
  11:09am Brain in KU:

Matt do you fancy this
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17623609
  11:09am glenn:

it is sort of pink panther - esque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Brain
My dear friend Oliver Trager wrote the definitive (and most wonderful) biography/chronology of His Lordship.
  11:09am Carmichael:

OK, done reading the comments. Kat, I'm rarely "on time" for the naked woman, whatever that means.
  11:11am Matt from Springfield:

True, glenn.
  11:11am kat330:

@Carm: Your "hello" popped up just before Jean Ritchie sang a lyric about coming to see "the naked woman." :)
  11:11am Brain in KU:

Yes Doug, managed to get a copy from a shop in Redondo Beach! Oliver very kindly sent me the missing CD and then some. Lovely man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

This number is going to experience some turbulence. Please return to your seats and fasten your safety belts.
  11:12am Cheech:

@naked woman: Don't start without me!
  11:12am joe:

Very little info about Eloise out there and all Tracy info seems to refer back to the Allmusic.com bio
  11:13am kat330:

Castanet to strap us in.
  11:13am Carmichael:

@kat: Oh ... That Jean's a bawdy one, eh? Must be why I enjoy her so.
  11:13am Hugo:

On the 60s: With the advent of torrents, I've been busily retrieving English TV series from the decade: Danger Man, The Baron, Man in a Suitcase, Department S, and not forgetting, The Saint. Those were the days ...
  11:14am Brain in KU:

I'm sure this is not the ritmo htey had in mind.

Oliver Trager penned a wonderful blog for a while about listening to baseball on the radio:

  11:14am Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Sure, I think I've seen every Bond movie at least once. Some multiple times (they were once a staple of Ted Turner's cable networks in the US)
  11:15am Hugo:

Also, not forgetting The Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan.
  11:15am joe:

@Matt I remember when they used to do Bond week or month (I forget which long time ago :) ) on ABC every year
  11:15am marcury:

Hugo, the best of them all IMO was the Prisoner.
  11:16am Brain in KU:

Got to do some gardening. BE SEEING YOU.
  11:16am Van in DC:

Ho odd. Hans Dulfer..."Candy Clouds"...by ANY chance is Candy Dulfer related?
  11:16am marcury:

And can't forget the Avengers, with my childhood crush Diana Rigg!
  11:16am Carmichael:

@joe: Here's a bio for Eloise and Tracy Schwarz: http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/artist/the-new-lost-city-ramblers/11593380/
  11:17am Carmichael:

@Van: Father and daughter. Met her once. She seemed very nice.
  11:17am kat330:

@Brain: Righty-O! Your Long Good Friday potatoes! :)
  11:18am Van in DC:

Yep, just found it on wiki...Hans is her father. She was born in '69, so I am assuming this song is about her
  11:18am joe:

About 2 years ago I watch the entire series of The Prisoner in one marathon sitting. It took me a few days to completely snap back into reality :)
  11:19am Van in DC:

This is just joy joy joy
  11:19am joe:

@Carmichael: Work is blocking site. Any mention of what her and Tracy's relationship was? Wife? Sister?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
Given that this Dulfer record was made in 1970, I think it's a good bet. Nice bit of detective work!
  11:20am kat330:

@joe: JT and I are making our slow way through the whole series again. Just too much to fill the senses and so little time... And like Brain in KU, we have gardening coming up on today's schedule, too.
  11:21am kat330:

@Doug: Yeah, mollusk this, and I'm riding it out without a seatbelt just fine.
  11:21am joe:

@kat330 Yeah I would suggest maybe a bit of a break between every few episodes probably didn't help that I was taking in The Avengers on BBC America at the same time.
  11:22am earwax:

@macury I also had a crush on Diana Rigg. I wanted to grow up and be a spy. That didn't work out.
  11:23am Van in DC:

How oh how have I never heard that Candy Clouds before?! That was pure awesome!
  11:23am kat330:

@joe: We have the Avengers box set, too. :) And Rockford Files and...yada, yada, yada...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

  11:23am marcury:

@earwax, I just wanted to grow up and spy on her, that didn't work out either
  11:24am kat330:

Children of the world -- that would be us!
  11:24am Van in DC:

Children of the World. I think.
  11:24am kat330:

[um, would be we, s.b.]
  11:25am Matt from Springfield:

Yep, Children of this World.
Panta Rhei of course being Greek, "all things are in flux".
  11:25am Hugo:

Hans Dulfer was also on "Maine", from 1977, with Roswell Rudd.
  11:25am kat330:

Pinky link, Van!
  11:25am Brain in KU:

Could not get outside 'cause of the belting. Going now. Thoughts on Linda Thorson. Best figure worst acting in Avengers, two became, Bond grils.
  11:25am listener james from westwood:

i should grab "the prisoner" on netflix. got the first season of "boardwalk empire" in but it's not grabbing me. i've only seen about a third of the "prisoner" eps.
  11:25am Van in DC:

lol Kat330 :)
  11:26am kat330:

And our wonderful host is "school child," nicht wahr, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Right you are Hugo. You are a wise one, Sir.
  11:27am Matt from Springfield:

Joe McG played East German last week from the "Eastern Bloc Funk Experience"--1974 makeout music by Uschi Bruning, just like US music of the same period!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
Wahr you are.
  11:28am Hugo:

@Doug: Just checked the back cover :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

Thoughts of necking in East Germany make me hot. Kinda like Dave Rawlings guitar playing. (Thank God Rawlings isn't East German. I'd explode.)
  11:29am marcury:

Off to work, Bye All
  11:29am Michael:

James - Boardwalk does pick up mid-season and the last 2-3 ep's are good. 2nd season gets my thumbs up as well.
  11:29am Van in DC:

And "Doug" translates as "Awesome drummer DJ dude."
  11:29am Carmichael:

@joe: Tracy and Eloise were husband and wife. They played in the New Lost City Ramblers with Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley, then went solo in the 70s. They got back together and released an album in '97 called There Ain't No Way Out.
  11:31am listener james from westwood:

good to know, michael; thanks. looks like michael williams will get more screen time in the eps to come; never a bad thing.
doug: i dig a marx-quotin' woman in a snappy mao jacket.
  11:32am Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
I read somewhere that a Douglas was a dark body of water (in Scotland). Or did I dream that?

@Carm
Did that E-Music bio definitively state that T and E were married? I didn't catch that. I'm still unsure. Of all the things to be tormented by.

  11:35am Van in DC:

Friday (especially today!) is always a quandary: Leave for a while to grab lunch and miss part of GTDS or miss some of Steinski?
  11:35am northguineahills:

sweeeeeet!
  11:36am listener james from westwood:

that joe henderson track was mighty.
  11:36am kat330:

Gotta scram for the garden, and then make some tea for the tillerman, JT! Thanks for this Long GREAT Friday set today, Doug! Will still be listening (or trying to over the tiller).
  11:37am Van in DC:

Agreed!
  11:37am listener james from westwood:

@van: i face the same prob on wednesdays; weekly conference call in the middle of the nazario scenario. i usually leave amanda on at low volume so all can share it.
  11:37am listener james from westwood:

what better place to scram to than a garden? enjoy, kat!
  11:38am Carmichael:

Doug, it said "After the NLCR's heydays, Tracy Schwarz went on the road with his wife and then his son ..." I'm assuming Eloise is the wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

If I remember correctly, Listener Annie used to tune in this show from her garden. I always loved that image.
  11:42am trs:

Doug! what a fantastic show, been tuning in whenever I can. I'm sure there is a good reason why there is no podcast for this show, but if there was I would be your first subscriber since I live in a home without an internet connection. Foolish me.
  2:14pm Van in DC:

MAN!! I am listening to that Candy Clouds again, and just being blown away all over again. LOVE IT! It is joyful genius brilliantly presented in such masterful aural form!
