Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 10, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Fecal incident!
  3:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Unless a pool is closeby, it usually pays to call ahead of time to make sure it's open; any little incident can close a pool down for an hour, or the whole day. Not to mention the sound of thunder closing outdoor pools...

Honey West is an American crime drama television series that aired on ABC during the 1965-1966 television season. The series stars Anne Francis as female private detective Honey West and John Ericson as her partner Sam Bolt.
Only 30 episodes were produced. The entire first season is available on DVD.

Such a wry sense of humor these Flemion bros. have. I'm sure spinning "I'm a Ghost" would be fully appreciated.

Shocking Blue! It's been a while since I"ve heard this original version, at first I thought you were about to play Bananarama at a slower speed.

This record is great. Neil!
  4:36pm

Bet a really good mashup could be done between Venus and Young's Oh Susanna.
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for noticing and pointing out the similar melody of this new Neil to "Venus", BT!
  4:38pm
Mr. Personage:

Someone should do a show of songs that sound like they could be plagiarizing other people's songs.
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Interesting arrangement of an old American song, no doubt.
  4:39pm
Pat in Philadelphia:

XYX! Did they finally put out a full length LP?
  4:39pm
Mr. Personage:

Unless you've already done it of course.
  4:40pm
Mike East:

Funny, I was just talking about how I wrote a song last weekend that rips off a song that I wrote 6 years ago...which I'm sure I ripped off of something else.
  4:40pm
Honey Water:

@Matt: By changing the old standard from major to minor key, it bears great resemblance to Venus, but I doubt Young was conscious of that. Or maybe he was. [shrug]
  4:40pm
fred:

The label names are appropriate too: Venus on Repertoire, Oh Susanna on Reprise
  4:40pm

  4:44pm

ha, Cheri, youtube message says the copyright claim has been "reviewed" and all charges dropped. Evidently a dog panting in slo-mo doesn't much resemble bad house music.
  4:45pm
Pat in Philadelphia:

Consider that XYX LP pre ordered!
  4:46pm
Cheri Pi:

Where's the fun in that BSI? You're not living if you're not being investigated.
  4:46pm
BSI:

@Cecile: adventures in downsizing. I'm way overdue for a design portfolio overhaul anyway. Haven't really been hunting since 2002. Feels like a widow re-entering the dating scene... weird!
  4:49pm

Yeah, that's a great way of putting in. Oy. Well, have the best of luck!
I start Intro to Typography at the end of August myself.

@Carm: Oh noes! That stuff is brutal (really my prospects would go up so much if I could code, but I just can't write new code. Still, taking the courses has been beneficial--you can rip off existing code and beat it into your own ends :)

But yeah, not too many thrills in there...

  5:08pm
WRECKEDUMB:

@cecile. what movie was that from Salt Lake City Punks? lol. Singer sounds like King Diamond
  5:08pm
Cecile:

it's an American Movie joke.

"Why would you pronounce it cuh-ven? It sounds like 'oven'!"
  5:08pm
WRECKEDUMB:

without all the falsetto of course
  5:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Cuh-ven" was the band that took "One Tin Soldier" as a break from their heavy side. Is this the same band? I've only heard one of their heavier songs "Blood On The Snow", and it sounded more proggy.
  5:09pm
WRECKEDUMB:

That's right American Movie. ha...
  5:09pm

I saw Merciful Fate once. I laughed really heard.
  5:09pm

@s b/p: Where there's an entry for Scientology no doubt.
  5:11pm
WRECKEDUMB:

i saw King Diamond once and did the same thing. Once when I ws in 7th grade religion class my teacher took my first Mercyful Fate album cover from me cause i was showing the dude next to me the pic of King inside the upside down cross. I went up to her after class and asked for my cover back and she said "No!!!!". Bitch, hope she burns at the stake.
  5:11pm
Cecile:

hard.
  5:13pm
Cecile:

wreckedumb, that was silly. Merciful Fate/King Diamond probably turned more kids off satanism because it looked so stupid.
  5:15pm
Cecile:

black superman! Haven't heard this in any language in about 35 years.
  5:16pm
WRECKEDUMB:

Their first album, Melissa, ruled and to a lesser extent their next, Don't Break the Oath. I kinda lost interest after that, but I saw King in the 90's at a club on Beale Street. Soon after I sold my original Mercyful Fate shirt on ebay for like $90
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: What was the original?! I thought this was an odd Thai-language ska tribute to M. Ali!
  5:17pm
Cecile:

nope. I gotta look up the original.
  5:18pm
Cecile:

Original was Johnny Wakelin and the Kinshasa band. Heard it a lot in AUS when it came out in 75/76.
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

#1 in Aus in fact. #7 in UK, #21 in US.
  5:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

"After few further hits ("Africa Man", "You Turn Me On", "Dr. Frankenstein's Disco Party") his success cooled down."
  5:25pm

I think I need to hear Dr. Frankenstein's Disco Party.
  5:26pm
Cecile:

eh, it wasn't as weird as I hoped.
