Listener comments!

Wed. 8/15/12 12:02pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

My god, I thought that was Lemon Jelly... Haven't heard *them* in a while!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:02pm Cecile:

DUANE! Good afternoon.

The Arrested Development Unsung was kind of a bust. I loved how hippie Speech ended up giving his band members contracts almost as bad as James Brown's band. Tennessee is brilliant, but I think they were really overrated.
Wed. 8/15/12 12:03pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Lemon Jelly was a guilty pleasure a few years back...
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:03pm Cecile:

I like it, it's pretty and kind of soothing. First time I've heard it.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:04pm paula pc:

this is REALLY GREAT to start...sunny sunny...
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:04pm Ike:

Oh yeah, Lemon Jelly. Nice.
Wed. 8/15/12 12:04pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Btw, Hello Duane! Told you I'd be seeing you on the radio!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:10pm ?:

Hell y'all! Happy Hump Day. Cecile: Yeah the AD unsung was a bit underwhelming. Tennessee and the People Everyday remix were great though!
Jan: I never doubted you for a moment:)
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:11pm robyn:

is this the walter gibbons show..?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:11pm Cecile:

Very true. And they had a nice long chunk of Dion Farris's "I Know". hahahhah sweet revent.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:13pm Cecile:

revenge, I mean.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:15pm ?:

robyn: No not this week. It's comin though! Just wanna make it special!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:19pm Cecile:

Duane, I think the thing was, is by the end, I wanted to emulate Ms. Farris and throw a chair at Speech myself
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:21pm ?:

cecile:hahaha! He's a bit sanctimonious
Wed. 8/15/12 12:22pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Duane, you need to put in your name in the chat... it's coming up as "?"
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:23pm Duane:

To quote Eazy E.."You know who the F** this is" :)
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:23pm robyn:

oh ok. the percussion in the 33hz got me wondering.
Wed. 8/15/12 12:23pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

  Wed. 8/15/12 12:24pm Cecile:

I love that line that one of his ex-bandmates fired off at him "The only thing you have in common with Prince is your height!"
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:28pm Duane:

  Wed. 8/15/12 12:29pm Jeremy Shatan:

Yo, all. Speaking of Unsung, we just watched the Sheila E. episode & I have a burning desire to hear Azteca (Coke & Pete Escovedo's band). Any in the Duane/FMU archives?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:30pm Cecile:

I'd bet Doug has played them.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:30pm Duane:

Jeremy: Hmmm...let me see
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:31pm Jeremy Shatan:

As for the Arrested Dev. episode - I don't think I can take it. I found them reprehensible at the time...
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:31pm Jeremy Shatan:

Speaking of Unsung, how about some R.E.S.P.E.C.T for Aretha's sisters? Love this!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:32pm doca:

hi you all, great show so far.
@Cecile: if you'd like to see the results, i've translated maracatu atômico into english
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:33pm Duane:

No doubt Jeremy!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:33pm robyn:

oh man...this is one of my favorite jams you've ever played duane!! :) this and the lord echo i listen to regularly even after many moons have passed.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:35pm Cecile:

doca, I'd love to!!!

Jeremy, the angry ex-bandmates are really funny. In a sad way.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:36pm Mike East:

I'll chime in and say, I liked and like Arrested Development. I got into Sly and the Family Stone because of them. I'll have to check out that Unsung. I hope it doesn't ruin it for me. ok, back to work.
Wed. 8/15/12 12:36pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yeah Duane, I still listen to Lord Echo as well, so thanks for that one!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:36pm Cecile:

next week is finally the 18-hankie Gerald Levert episode.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:36pm doca:

@Cecile: can i post it here ou do i send you somehow?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:37pm Jeremy Shatan:

This is quite the groove, indeed.
Cecile: That might be worth it!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:37pm Cecile:

Duane can give you my email, or post it here, I think others might like it!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:38pm doca:

i'll post it here, 'cause i have to go to work! but don't try looking for a meaning 'though
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:39pm Cecile:

that's fine. It didn't seem like the writer was that linear of a guy. which is cool.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:40pm doca:

Jorge Mautner - Maracatu Atômico

The beak of the hummingbird kisses the flower, kisses the flower
And all the flora and faun in love screams
Whoever holds the standard has the art, has the art
And passes through here with eletronic obstinence* atomic maracatu

Behind the skyscraper there's the sky, there's the sky
And even more behind another lies another starless sky
Over the umbrella sits the rain, sits the rain,
Which has so beautiful raindrops that you feel as you could eat them

Inside the cauliflower there's the flower, there's the flower,
Which not only is a flower but also has a flavour,
Inside the glovebox is the glove, is the glove,
Which someone with so dark and sharp nails forgot to dress

In the bottom of the lightning rod there's the lightning, the lightning,
Which fell from the storm's dark clouds,
Every blackboard is all black, is all black
In which I write my name only to show my attachment.

(repeats first stanza)

* "raça eletrônico", it could also mean eletronic race, in the sense of a colour race (black, yellow, white etc). I guess mine is the correct meaning.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:42pm Cecile:

doca, thank you so much!
The images are wonderful!
Now I think I gotta learn how to read Portugese!
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:42pm doca:

Duane, sorry for the long post.
@Cecile: yes, he has a lot of influence from brazilian 60's poetry. he's also a writer and released a number of books.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:44pm Cecile:

cool, thank you again doca!
Wed. 8/15/12 12:45pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

My day was slipping into crankiness, but you're pulling me out of it Duane...
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:46pm doca:

Cecile, if you need anything more from portuguese translated into english, just say it! i have to practice a little bit.
well, i have to go, 'till later.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:47pm robyn:

it seems to me that a lot of Portuguese/french music is closer to poetic traditions than ours is. there are few english language songwriters off the top of my head who are that clever and/or playful with language. which is why i enjoy it, even in translation (thank you doca!!).
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:48pm Cheri Pi:

  Wed. 8/15/12 12:48pm katy Eustis:

Duane, You played a few shows back prince's first first band what are they called again? I could not find them anywhere and now I've forgotten the name
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:49pm Jeremy Shatan:

Pretty tough to be cranky during this outrageous number.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:49pm doca:

@robyn: seein' from a distance, i agree with you. in english it seems to be hard for a songwriter to not write from the perspective of the "I" or the "self".
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:51pm Duane:

Katy:Was it Mazerati or Modernaires?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:52pm katy Eustis:

Was he in both?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:52pm paula pc:

@ Cecile - I have Wild Seed - Wild Flower on cassette, and it is hard to get past "I Know" because it is so, SO great.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:56pm Cecile:

The Madison is also a dance number from the 60s, as seen in the original Hairspray.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:56pm robyn:

@doca good point. i think the poetic tradition here is a bit different too, more free form. i prefer the wordplay and rhyme of someone like brassens over someone like dylan for ex. just my taste i guess.
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:57pm Cecile:

prince was also in a band called 94 East?
  Wed. 8/15/12 12:57pm Chaim:

The Madison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MiMrtI3aQ4
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:03pm Duane:

Hi Cheri Pi!!
Katy& Cecile: 94 east was Prince's first band but I don't remember playing them on my show recently. Mazerati was produced by Prince. Modernaires was Dez Dickerson's band the former prince guitarist. I played those bands recently
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:05pm Cheri Pi:

Katy, Cecile, Duane: 94 East ?! I need to hear it.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:06pm 94 east:

a track by them just got put on a compilation. zafsmusic "private wax"
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:06pm Cecile:

nice! damn hate to leave during Edu Lobo, but gotta go. see ya in a while hopefully, or next week. Take care!
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:07pm Cecile:

It also came out as a semi-legit release in the mid-80s with one of the ugliest covers ever.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:08pm Cecile:

yep, still kind of ugly
They called it Minneapolis Genius - 94 East, but everyone knew who it was .
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:17pm paula pc:

this is hella fun and squealy
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:20pm Jeremy Shatan:

Once again, a Prince bootleg trumps much of his official work.
Wed. 8/15/12 1:21pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

There you go again Jeremy...
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:21pm Droll:

This Extra Lovable track is epic! How can someone as over-recorded as Prince still have so many awesome demo tracks in the vault?
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:24pm Cecile:

this onra is amazing. It's a perfect rollerskating jam.
Wed. 8/15/12 1:34pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Nice Ex Cops remix Duane, wonder who did it? ;)
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:36pm Duane:

Jan: Yeah i wonder
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:38pm Jeremy Shatan:

Maybe a former band member remixed it - call it the "Ex-Ex Cop Remix."
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:41pm Cecile:

he's gonna love you like a lady, and steal riffs from Ladies Night...
Wed. 8/15/12 1:42pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

It just started to rain in Hoboken, and I've never seen such huge drops. It was more like a drizzle, but with just huge heavy raindrops...
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:43pm Cecile:

when that happens, Jan, I think the clouds don't want to rain, but they're so full of water they just start kind of sweating..
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:43pm Cecile:

this 5 letters is nuts, but cool. Uhnh
Wed. 8/15/12 1:44pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Nice description Cecile!
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:45pm efd:

I'm really digging that one popping sound that comes up every eight beats.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:45pm efd:

...well, was. :)
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:45pm robyn:

i think this five letters is on a pretty good disco compilation called disco deutschland...good stuff.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:46pm Duane:

efd: hahaha! Yeah man those Italians and their disco.Love 'em!
Wed. 8/15/12 1:46pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

efd: it's still echoing in your head...
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:47pm efd:

oh, it's on the Disco Italia comp, which I already own! Love when that happens! :D
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:47pm Cecile:

I'm warming to the Italians and their disco. Somehow nearly all of it escaped me back in the day.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:50pm Cecile:

voodoo party is the same album Mr. Giant Man is on! Has it been reissued?
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:50pm morisiah:

really nice stuff, duane.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:52pm Duane:

Cecile, yes it has! thanx morisiah
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:55pm robyn:

hahaha, whoops...got them confused. disco italia. that one has a lot of good stuff on it, e fatto e sorde, rainbow team. both cds are all good.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:55pm Cecile:

well, later. really this time.
  Wed. 8/15/12 1:57pm Chris O:

Duane! Chris O'Rourke here. I could listen to you all day. So fabulous.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:01pm Duane:

Chris O!!! How are you man? THanx for litening and the props as well!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:01pm efd:

@robyn, agreed!

Here's a link to an image of that nutty Halloween LP cover that Duane was just talking about: http://bit.ly/RgY18N
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:02pm robyn:

the 70s had a lot of political nuttiness in italy, but that's always the case. maybe they needed to lighten the mood and have some fun.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:04pm Ike:

I hope it's not disrespectful if I express complete puzzlement at how often Thin Lizzy is played around here lately. Sounds like severe testosterone poisoning to me. Dudes trying to musically prove how big theirs are, no?
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:06pm Duane:

Ike: Thin Lizzy..i just think of it as really classy, rock n roll. Fun. no more testorerone fueled than Zappa to me
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:08pm paula pc:

@ Ike -- I don't have any b_lls and I LOVE Thin Lizzy, esp. some of the "deep" tracks
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:09pm Ike:

LOL, "classy" is the last word I'd use. :) And I don't understand the Zappa reference... never got into him although I don't dislike him as much as Scharpling does. BTW, Scharpling was describing Zappa last night as "Bitches' Brew skipping while somebody makes fart noises" or something like that. Ha.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:10pm Duane:

when you compare Lizzy to their contemporaries, i'd say it was a bit classier, sure! They have some jamz
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:11pm robyn:

@efd that halloween cover is indeed gobsmackingly crazy. it looks like a crappy webpage today. ahead of their time!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:11pm Droll:

Ike, Prog rock is where the unapologetic "Whip it out and let's see who's bigger!" occurs. Thin Lizzy is just an amplified blues band that just happens to know how to really, really play. Zappa, is noodler. I never understood why it takes him 7 minutes to play what should be an 8-bar solo.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:12pm Chris O:

I love Thin Lizzy.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:12pm Jeremy Shatan:

That was a super funky Lizzy song - loved it. I think they dumbed down a bit later on...
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:13pm Ike:

Hmm, maybe I just don't like a lot of blues-based rock, although I do like some blues.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:16pm oooli:

zappa liked to tweak the people who took there music SO SERIOUSLY
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:19pm Ike:

Al Green ✓✓✓+ :)
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:37pm Cecile:

I missed Lizzy. :(
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:39pm Tati:

I missed Lizzy too :( On the plus this Dee Edwards tune is sweet!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:39pm Duane:

and all the Lizzy talk, Cecile
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:40pm Cecile:

I saw it. I always thought Lizzy as being more a folk-music derived hard rock band, but not bombastic like Zep, or trad-ish like Steeleye Span or poised like Horslips (all bands I like)
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:42pm Duane:

you also missed the OG version of "Maybe so, Maybe no" Cecile
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:42pm Cheri Pi:

@Cecile, have you ever heard the Replacements talk about the lyrics for Bastards that were changed? "We owe the sons of no one" became "We are the sons of no one" I can't find any documentation of this anywhere
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:42pm Cecile:

And there are short stories that wish they told as much in as few words as The Boys are Back in Town.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:43pm Jeremy Shatan:

Oh, Zep had plenty of folk in them, too - Davy Graham & Bert Jansch were huge influences on Page, not to mention a duet with a certain Sandy Denny.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:44pm Cecile:

no, never heard that. That might have been on their Shit hits the Fan tape, which I had and lost.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:45pm Cheri Pi:

everyone was hearing it as "are" not "owe"so eventually they started singing it that way too...
Wed. 8/15/12 2:46pm tim from champaign:

De La Soul - Plug Tunin?
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:46pm Cecile:

you know it, Jeremy.

Ha, Cheri that makes complete sense.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:47pm Jeremy Shatan:

You're blowing MY head, now, Duane! Make it stop - I'm trying to work!!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:50pm BodegaMan:

@Duane, where did expo say he'd be Thursday night?

Tim from Champaign (my best friend is also a Tim from Champaign). How was Sleeping Bear? I'm from Chicago originally so your vacation took me back for a minute.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:51pm Duane:

Expo @ LEs Pouson ROuge w/ Rich Medina and DJ AKalepse
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:51pm Jeremy Shatan:

One amazing fact I learned from R.J. Smith's The One is that Bobby Byrd's family sponsored JB's release from a prison work camp & he lived with the family. Talk about deep relationships.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:54pm Cheri Pi:

Duane you are killing me-old skhool style and I like it
Wed. 8/15/12 2:54pm Kat in Chicago:

@Cheri Pi - did the Replacements also talk about the Sons of Norway (re Bastards of Young)?
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:56pm BodegaMan:

Duane, I think that Rich Medina thing is tonight, not tomorrow.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:56pm Cheri Pi:

LOL Kat in Chi.
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:57pm Cecile:

YEAH YEAH YEAH Billy Stewart!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:57pm Duane:

bodega man: yeah its tonight..sorrry!
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:58pm Cecile:

Sons of Norway! righton
  Wed. 8/15/12 2:59pm robyn:

  Wed. 8/15/12 2:59pm Cheri Pi:

Norway, U.P. right?
  Wed. 8/15/12 3:00pm Cecile:

was that expo. Awesome job, expo!
Wed. 8/15/12 3:00pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Thank you Duane! Thank you Expo!
  Wed. 8/15/12 3:00pm Cecile:

it's an organization in the Twin Cities for Norwegians.
But my great aunt lived in Norway, MI
Wed. 8/15/12 3:01pm Kat in Chicago:

A commenter on songmeanings.net:
he slips in a "sons of norway" for a "sons of no one" one time
sons-of-norway is kinda-sorta big in mpls. it's a group along the lines of shriners and elks and what-not that were so popular to the generation of the 50's.
in the 80's they degenerated to the point that they mainly sold insurance (and like the shriners and the elks gained no new members while watching all of their current members die off). The had a huge building in the twin cities and they allowed local bands to rent their space on friday and saturday nights for concerts.
i'm sure the mats played at least once at the sons of norway during '81."
  Wed. 8/15/12 3:01pm Cecile:

the Sons have a little skyscraper! you can go have a pancake breakfast there.
Wed. 8/15/12 3:01pm tim from champaign:

Bodega - It was great! Hadn't been up that way in about 10 years. Thanks for askin!
  Wed. 8/15/12 3:01pm Jeremy Shatan:

Yes - mucho props to Expo!
