Synchrony such an interesting arrangement...making the most of a few instruments...she got some pipes & phrasing - & they rushing it...music communicates so many contexts so compactly

RR63-
I haven't heard of that book, although for a moment I thought you were linking me this article that an old friend emailed me with the subject heading: "YOU ARE LIVING A LIE". The
article itself is titled: We Don't Like Unfamiliar Music, Even Though We Claim We Do
Check it out--

- Levitin addresses the familiarity thang - & earworms too. What's interesting is w/ scans & other things we can actually learn something about what's happening w/ the Brain & Music now - altho' what's between our ears remains the most complex thing we know of (!) - & a big takeaway from the book is that Music uses more dif. parts of the brain perhaps then anything else we do (!).
- Will check your Link...

I think that although Dr. Goodman might be right--in general--there are plenty of people who find novel sounds appealing.
Avatar 7:26am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hope I ain't drove you off w/ blahblah CDT!
...Levitin does address the Familiar/Novel issue - & concludes the *Balance* is critical. What would be interesting would be to test FMUheads against a sample group! Seems to me what's Familiar &/or Novel will depend on how much you listen to - but given background music more & more people hear - maybe that means less than I think by sheer 'hours'...Some get to a point where they're more interested in where the Stones got the stuff than hearing the Stones again - & some never care...I think of stuff Zappa (I think) said about many just want aural wallpaper...&tc. ...
Avatar 7:33am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...i.e. - if accepting that Familiar/Novel Balance is critical in what makes sounds Music we wanna hear (&/or choose) - which seems to me to make great sense (you need to relate to it yet not be bored)
- then what's 'familiar' &/or 'novel' has to mean different things to dif. people
...it just shifts the question, or leads to another Q of what makes these people dif. from each other...
Avatar 7:34am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...playing great stuff btw : ) ...

...I find comparing Musical Diet to Food Diet to be a very serviceable metaphor.
- Relating to your Link - I consider myself having 'Eclectic' tastes obviously - but come back often to Favorites (Hendrix-Who-Beatles, Coltrane-Monk, others)
- just like one might have staples in food diet one eats often - partly for basic nutrition - partly because of budget
- but feel the need for variety & new spices...even in terms of where the food is!...
Avatar 7:50am
Jason Elbogen:

RR-
The food analogy works very well for me. My diet's radically different now than when I was young, but I still enjoy burgers/fries/pizza.
Avatar 7:58am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- which touches on the issue of adolescent imprinting - yerknow - often said yer stuck w/ what you liked in HighSchool. Partly because of an older sibling, I was into Music even earlier. It happens Eclecticism is one of the things I was 'taught'.
...On Meghan's UTP yesterday, she announced her next theme was cheezy 80s & I got to talking about how people around here where I am (NH) who are just a little (to a bit...) younger than me are reallly into this MTV 80s Top40 - which leaves me utterly dumbfounded...

Hello Jason and everybody.
I don't listen much to what I liked in high school (New Order and early REM being the only ones I still listen to, and occasionally at that). As for my college favorites, Juliana Hatfield and Kathleen Hanna are still on my playlist, but that's it.

"Nachtlich Spaziergang Durch Klinger" means "nighttime walk through klinger" where klinger could be some place, dont know. its a name, anyway. Its also gramatically incorrect, it should be "Nächtlicher Spaziergang..."
