I cheated on WFMU yesterday, and listened to the Coltrane marathon on WKCR.

Was the any post A Love Supreme Coltrane featured on WKCR?

- was also very recently 50th Anniversary of the terrible events that inspired 'Alabama' - so...

This is interesting--not the take of "Alabama" that was on "Live at Birdland." Very cool. And isn't Hipnosis on a Jackie McLean album that Grachan plays on? You're playing some excellent tunes today, my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Scott McDowell:

The Live at Birdland LP that I pulled from the WFMU library had a shortened version of Alalbama - only 2 minutes! So bizarre.
Avatar 3:18pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- were trying to wiki 'Hipnosis' to find out about personnel & such - & it looked like that to me...

Yep indeed it's from the Jackie McLean album Hipnosis -- but pulled here from Grachan Moncur's Mosaic Select box set.

Thanks for the link, RR--wow, look at that lineup! A Grachan Moncur Mosaic box set. Bet they sold about 3 of those! (I'd be one of the 3, of course--might have to pick that one up.) Love Grachan Moncur's "Evolution" album, too!
  3:23pm
SLHalper:

@tim, they played take 1 of Ascension in the afternoon, then a 2 hour show co-hosted by Elliot Sharp with only '66 music - mostly unreleased. Very out.
Avatar 3:23pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

LOVE LOVE LOVE this Coltrane/Cherry release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm

re: mosaic select box: It's mostly McLean records plus Some Other Stuff and Evolution.

I got to see ROVA play Ascension in Guelph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm

There's a couple good Moncur releases on Actuelle as well.

Mark:

Coltrane WAS very out in '66. Just listened to part of his set at Newport that year. People must have been wondering wtf was going on. I love this Cherry/Coltrane recording, too. I never knew they played together--great stuff! Speaking of Don Cherry, pick up his "Complete Communion" with Gato Barbieri if you don't already have it. I think Billy Higgins plays drums on that one, too. The perfect balance of melodic and out. Great album.

...to some Rockers, Jazz is - Uncool (&, even more so maybe - vice versa).
- *Sorry* - Trane & Monk are as much 'Home' as Jimi & the Beatles...
  3:35pm
Mark:

Yeah that was a monstrous quartet. Apparently they were THE group to see in NY that first year they blew in from L.A. ('59, maybe?) Charlie said he looked up one night and along the bar was every musician he respected, including Mingus, checking them out. Must have been a little nerve-wracking for him.

Most musicians respect other great musicians, regardless of genre. It's the fans that can be closed-minded.

Leonard Bernstein's a perfect example of the kind of musician I was talking about. When everyone was making fun of the Beatles, Bernstein told them, wait--there's more here than screaming teenagers, you have to listen to how inventive and original this music is. He was a great fan of all good music--not just classical.
