A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
tim from champaign:

That would be fun seeing a Banksy piece in action. I dig what Banksy does a whole lot more than Shepherd Fairey. In fact, I strongly dislike Fairey's art. Co-opting iconic images and the work of others, then becoming litigious when others rip off his artwork leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm glad he got the book thrown at him for ripping off the AP Obama image.

I think the rule for press photographers that some bands give - you can only shoot 2-4 songs, is a good rule for amateurs too.

I think a photo here and there is OK. But does the world really need tons of shitty phone videos of every performance?

Avatar 11:45am

I like graffiti if it is good.
So much of it is so crappy.

And objectively, no matter how much I love good graffiti, there cant' be grafiiti in or on a bus or train, because then no one wants to ride it. It has been proven time and time again.

There are several businesses here that let graffiti artists do a wall, and they are ever-changing and often quite beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am
tim from champaign:

@jennique - very interesting. What was Shep like in school? I have no problem with appropriation but Fairey never seems to give credit where credit is due. Most interviews I've seen/read of Fairey, he seems to smugly come from a place of privilege.

Most building owners welcome Banksy's art b/c they can either sell it, or it increases the building's value. See when some tagger 'defaced' a Bansky work the super from the building tackled the tagger (a few weeks ago in Williamsburg).

Cecile - I am so grateful that all this digital media did not exist when i went to college. And I had lots of fun too.
Tim - he was a bit standoffish to me, but otherwise okay. He had a skateboarding crew and was always out skating with the boys. I went to a party at the house he shared with 5 or 6 other guys and saw that he built a half pipe in his bedroom, which took up the whole room. There were scuffs on the ceiling.

If it is in a place where it is permitted and encouraged I have no problem with it, even if its bad. I've watched my city get tagged on just about every surface imaginable over the last decade by about 2 dozen would be "artists" and its sickening. One of our most prolific taggers got sentenced yesterday with pretty hefty penalties.

...the thing about Graffiti is Who Owns the Environment - the Legal Property Owners or the People just want to Decorate &/or Sign the space they actually live in - Warhol saying he pointed soup 'cause he ate the damned stuff everyday & he & Lichtenstein did comics @ the same time 'cuse they read them! I see the point if it's ugly though - but I like what Banksy does - can't seeing getting uptight about it...My personal point of view is Art is essential to Human Beings just like food & dollars & property rights...

@Trouble - I think it was a-ok for Fairey to use the Obama image, it's the lying and not giving credit that bugs me. Kinda like Jimmy Page suing Schooly D for sampling Kashmir, yet the early Led Zep albums are full of songs credited to Page/Plant but were straight up rip offs of other musicians.

Oh I love art and public murals. Art is not optional. Cincinnati is putting up AMAZING murals all over the place and I gush when I see them. But for some self appointed asshole to spray paint his name on every surface in the city is not art by most peoples standards.

I think our class has the problem with not him not using the photo, but not throwing some money toward a working photographer. I am scrupulous about CC licenses in my classwork, and buy credits from canstockphoto.com for photos I can't find on Wikimedia. I want people to commission or buy my work - I have to start by supporting other artists.

Veteran's Day (observed)!

Futura 3000 once said that he thought graffiti was kids' way of saying "hi" to the city.
