Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, ndbob! I went to a house concert last evening to hear fellow North Dakotan Tom Brosseau.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:04am Erella:

Mary Margaret Ohara, John Oswald and friends are playing tonight at Imperial pub PWYC at 8pm. You might enjoy that if you are listening to Doug today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:04am Gary:

I want your job, Holly! That sounds like an awesome way to spend a day
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:04am Parq:

Hi, gang. Y'know, I try to take solace in being flippant too, but every now and then, I have to stop and acknowledge how horrified I am at what we've become in this century. And, of course, the more horrific an incident is, the surer it is that it will only strengthen the gun crowd's hold on the rest of us.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:07am Holly in NC:

@Gary - I wish you could take over for me, truly. SO not my forte.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:07am glenn:

i have that george barnes rekkid, by the way.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:07am ndbob:

@parq - you think then that gun owners are a monolithic block of extreme nra supporters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:08am Gary:

It's not mine either, at all. But I love the idea of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Parq! Hi George Barnes!
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:09am ndbob:

@Doug great! I loved the show you played of Tom's music - I added him to Twitter after that and tweeted him a few times

@parq news.yahoo.com... It will probably get worse before it gets better
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:10am Gary:

This is great. Reminds me of that censored songs list that is floating around
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:11am glenn:

i think that hunters and farmers have a reasonable excuse to own a rifle. i don't think anybody has any possible reason to own an uzi, or an ak47, or even a handgun, for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
I'm not sure how Parq is using the phrase "gun crowd," but I'm guessing he's not referring to every single individual who happens to own a gun. Just the community of people who assign to their guns the sorts of rights intended for actual humans.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:13am ndbob:

@Glenn totally agree re uzi's and ak47s - not so sure about handguns - no one needs an automatic weapon and to train a 9 year old to use one is crazy -which doesn't mean that some firearms training isn't appropriate for 9 year olds
  Fri. 8/29/14 9:15am Mr C:

Good morning blues...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Easy for you to say, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Who doesn't have the blues at 6:16 in the morning?
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:17am Erella:

No child of 9 needs to know how to use a firearm. And No one needs to use an automatic weapon.
They need to learn about how to cut their vegetables.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:18am glenn:

i'm not completely anti gun, by any means. i grew up on a farm, where they are a necessary thing. and there's no doubt, target shooting is a ton of fun. i just honestly think the only use for a handgun is to kill another person, and i frown on that.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:20am Erella:

I am completely anti gun for children
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:23am Frank from VT:

Do Canadian farmers have guns?
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:23am ndbob:

I am going to bow out of here for today - back for Uncle M - I have a Doctor's appointment later anyway and can't have my blood pressure go up - I also don't want to say things I may regret later
  Fri. 8/29/14 9:25am Mr C:

Magic Sam was remarkable as a live presence..thrilling and charismatic...a great memory to me..he did Cissy Strut the night I saw in Phila.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:25am glenn:

canadians have LOTS of guns. we just don't seem to think we can shoot anybody we want to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:27am Gary:

This so totally lives up to the promise of its title
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
You are among friends. Friends can disagree and not be unfriendly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:30am Uncle Michael:

The ice man cometh.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:30am ndbob:

@Glenn when I lived in Jamestown almost everyone owned a gun and there was very little violent crime - sad to see that holier-than-Americans attitude you have
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:32am Holly in NC:

@Mr C -So glad for you that you got to see Magic Sam, so sad for me that I didn't :-)

Re guns in US - My ex-husband, an avid, avid, hunter FOR FOOD ONLY (where do you think I get my venison?) and an even more avid target shooting afficionado/expert - was, in his youth, jointly trained by his hunter/trapper father & NRA instructors. He himself now is a licensed/certified NRA instructor. Who turned in his NRA membership quite a few years ago. NRA is NOT what it used to be.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:34am ndbob:

@Holly agree there for sure - I wonder how the NRA was taken over by a bunch of extremists - I remember even Bush Sr. turning in his NRA membership
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:34am listener james from westwood:

Firing a bolt-action .22 in Boy Scout camp was one of the ways I learned I needed glasses. I kept hitting other scouts' targets. Trip to the optometrist followed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:37am Uncle Michael:

I think young children should be limited to hand-to-hand combat like we were.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:38am ndbob:

"trained in combat hand to hand" I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
Thanks! You beat me to it!
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:40am duke:

A large amount of the NRA activities is acting as a lobby group for gun manufacturers. When you are in the gun business anything restricting gun sales is bad for business.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:41am glenn:

but who knows? it takes an extremist to understand another one. reasonable people have difficult wrapping their minds around that kind of whackadoodle behaviour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

I think the biggest victims of the NRA phony 2nd Amendment absolutism are the people who've spent such huge amounts on guns and ammo thinking they are protecting their "rights." I think Duke is right. It's all marketing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:42am listener james from westwood:

The Repub-driven law-and-order crusade (code words for anti-black fearmongering) in the mid/late 60s was, IIRC from something I've read, one of the forces that morphed the NRA from a hunting and sporting org to an absolutist gun-rights activist group.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:43am glenn:

well, sure. same goes for the tobacco business or the alcohol business. what if the second amendment said that people have the right to propel sugar beets at each other? i'm pretty sure the beet growers would be doing their best to stop anybody limiting their activities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:43am listener james from westwood:

This only accelerated under Reagan, despite his almost being murdered w a handgun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:44am ausmanx:

here i am in london! good afternoon, mr s (unusual time for me)... i'm happy to be comprehensively anti-gun. they're gonna start shooting badgers here again soon. that's just not fair. i say train the badgers to shoot back
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:44am Gary:

When I was a kid or maybe very early teen a friend took me out shooting with his BB gun. I aimed at a bird on a telephone wire above and, first time, shot it. It fell to the ground. It continued to move, slightly, in ways that suggested extreme trauma. It eventually stopped moving. I burst into tears. It was my only experience with guns.

I still eat birds, though.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:44am ndbob:

@the 2nd Amendment is what the Supreme Court says it is - there is an individual right to bear arms - but that it no way, as the court made clear, an absolute right
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:45am ndbob:

it in*
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:45am Uncle Michael:

I like cheese. Cheese is delicious.

There, I said it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:46am listener james from westwood:

And it's been limited in various ways on state and federal levels depending on legislation, e.g., w/r/t full-auto weapons or those equal or greater than .50 cal, even if the shooter is an adorbs wee girl.
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:49am holland oats:

drumma! peoples! tgigtds!
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:49am glenn:

it's the top knot, right? don't worry, she'll grow up to be tonya lee harding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:49am listener james from westwood:

Then she'll definitely need to know hand-to-hand (or pipe-to-knee) combat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
Tgigtds sounds like a foot fungus or something. Good morning!
Avatar Fri. 8/29/14 9:50am Parq:

Didn't think the point would still be going on. (Mrs. Parq needed the puter for a while.) I endorse Uncle Michael's position, as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 9:54am Brian in UK:

I am going to lay on you a whole bunch of interesting nuggets about an obscure Broadway musical. Coming up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 10:24am Brian in UK:

Taking of Pelham 123 The Musical, perchance.
An underground hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

No Brian in UK, a Broadway musical of that film would be called...

The Taking of Pelham, and a 5..6..7..8..

Re: Abdul Wadud, I have searched countless newspapers not freely available on the web. Nothing.

I'll repeat a mini-tour I mentioned yesterday. Sensations' Fix played last night in Charlottesville, will make it to LA and Oakland in early September. If you know the group you won't want to miss this.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, Alex in Illinois! May I assume that the Cubby Bear is on the NORTH side of Chicago?

@Dean
The club has been trying to find you in order to impose its two-drink minimum.
  Fri. 8/29/14 11:26am Dean:

They can tally up the bottles in the recycle bin and do the math.

In fact, the place is all ages, which is very cool. After a night of a particularly long and loud performance by a Dead-inspired jam band, the club apologized to the neighborhood by presenting free passes to everybody on the block.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/29/14 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

My favorite Thomas Mapfumo story is about the time the Rhodesian government arrested him because of his seditious music, which was being played despite bans against it. In order to try to discredit Mapfumo as a collaborator, the regime flew helicopters low over the bush where rebels were hiding. Hanging from the helicopters were loudspeakers pumping out Mapfumo's music at high volume. The authorities figured that the rebels would assume that Mapfumo had gone over to the other side if the government was playing it. Needless to say, the scheme backfired.

Ultimately and sadly, the whole revolution backfired with the installation of the monster Robert Mugabe.

Fuck!

Sadly, Doug, the worst in human nature seems to triumph sooner or later in all of these things.

I actually was not sure if the Cubby Bear still existed, but it still does in the same location that Uncle Michael described in the Chicago dialect. ("kitty corner" as opposed to "Catty corner" or "Caddy Corner")
