A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Your voice is a little on the Blue Jay side this morning. It's very sad, the state of the birds.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 10:27am Erella:

I wonder what became of the taxidermy specimens that you previously had access to. Perhaps those actual birds could be bought for a song because of the dangerous arsenic contained within.

I have a pretty vivid visual memory from when I was a teenager throwing Doritos off the back of a small boat and the sky filling with seagulls.

When my friend Dave was working in San Pedro he would bring a large bag of popcorn to work with him. The gulls started to recognize his truck and swarm behind him on his way into the job site.

Based partly on these events I once made a giant bird feeder as a sculpture.

Maybe bird seed could be part of the solution.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 10:51am Priscilla:

Hate to break it to you BOB, we were losers!
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:15am adrian in mpls:

@Marcel - wait, so are you saying my participation in Quiz Bowl in HS didn't make me cool?
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:15am Marcel M:

@ Adrian: hahahhahah

Most WFMU listeners continue to discover various sounds and music even into their advancing ages.

Can't help but think of the show Breaking Bad when I hear this song.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:18am Trouble:

i think high school is all about trying to fit in. right away that is a faulty concept.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:18am robyn:

@ngh what is the link to this article? i miss the excitement of discovering a band in HS and sharing it with friends, but you can still have that as an adult. it's just harder to remain open to the new as opposed to the comfortable, and the friends around you probably care less (enter the online WFMU community)
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:18am Trouble:

is this song in breaking bad? this version?
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:18am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I *do* think it's not unrelated to the same thing in Society that keeps the Music that WFMU plays from being distributed; I think a lot of people *would* like some of it - *if* they heard it ! (...all those people who say 'there's no good music now' - but never hear any of it to know...)
...I'm one of those people that always has a sneaking suspicion that Economics, Culture & Music do somehow effect each other
...there are no 'local' radio stations anymore, ferinstance, altho' you can get up on YouTube I guess...
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:19am Parq:

Nifty Shondels cover.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:20am Andrew Waterloo:

I had to guffaw at the articles saying we appreciate music less as we get older. For me it has been the exact opposite.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:20am listener james from westwood:

@ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ: Right there with you. Sounds good coming out of Joe!
@Trouble: BB uses the original. They had the willpower to hold off until the last season before using it. Worth the wait.

I feel pretty bad for people whose curiosity (about music and otherwise) ended after HS or college or at all. I don't feel sorry for scared white people though!
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:21am Brian in UK:

We have the class system over here. Stronger than it ever was, thanks to the Conservative Party.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:21am Marcel M:

Yes sadly lots of people just stop taking a real interest in music after High School and College
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:22am adrian in mpls:

@RevRabbit - I agree 100%
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:22am Andrew Waterloo:

We live in a risk averse society and people just don't have any patience for experiencing things they don't like. So radio stations, TV stations, Newspapers and magazines constantly worry about doing something that will make people change the channel.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:22am Rectitude:

I almost read it as "Get It Up On Youtube" ReVulition..
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there *is* the energy & trauma of adolescence - a biological peak, & the discovery - which is why that time often imprints - it just happens that most of us were prolly listening to less mainstream stuff even then, I'd venture
- Haha Rectitude !

I moved three times during high school, going to a junior high in one state, first 2 years of high school in another state and last 2 years in yet another state. That was the kiss of death for me. Thank GOD I had a Walkman full of angry punk music to keep me company.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:24am Brian in UK:

I do not listen to FMU to be different, just to hear different things.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:25am Andrew Waterloo:

I think we all share a collective inability to be cool
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:26am Brian in UK:

It is hard work being cool. No time to enjoy yourself. Bit like taking pictures at gigs instead of enjoying the music.
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:28am Brian in UK:

Love the title of this track. So true.
  Tue. 9/9/14 11:28am OTB:

@Trouble - HS less about fitting in than keeping other people out. If kids were taught to embrace that they know nothing and have their entire lives to grow, learn, and become human beings, and that even the dorkiest among us has something worthwhile to offer, I think there would be so much less insecurity and ignorance. And lord knows what else. But what the hell do I know?
Avatar Tue. 9/9/14 11:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& when I say 'Economics', I of course mean 'Politics' ; that is, I get all Chomsky & say it's this way on purpose because they want it to be...

It's like I always say: WFMU DJs aren't there because they're cool; they're cool because they're there.

- always loved Lennon's words on the Education System. If the purpose of the thing is to help people find out who they are & what needs to happen to get them into Society doing it - it fails so spectacularly it's beyond a joke to even think about...Interesting HS is singled out - that space between Childhood & Adulthood that no one really understands or plans for (after the School Shooting in Colorado - I thot - know exactly how you feel - but two weeks after School got out - none of it would even matter, kid !!)
...But of course I'm a Liberal & I think Education should be financed, because it's cheaper than a Society full of failed & mal-adjusted people - even if yer a Libertarian holed up in your compound w/ tripwire bombs against visitors...

There are people in this world who use "never heard of them" as a derisive statement.
