@Doug: was this Rufus Crisp recorded in 1972? Or just released then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:19am Brian in UK:

@Jeff it is not a name that you could invent or rather it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Uh...let me google that for myself...aaaaand considering this --- "Rufus Crisp (1880-1955)" --- I'm guessing it was recorded earlier.

Yup. Looky here: www.loc.gov...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:43am Gary:

Doug, what does "BR-3" mean?!? I can't figure it out Googling around
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Beats me, Gary. I remember hunting for an answer last time I played this record.
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:45am doca:

Hey, Doug! Toni Tornado! I'm busy but let me say: he became a major TV star in the 80's and the 90's, specially on Brazilian novelas. His musical career was cut short, however, when at a concert he attempted some kind of mosh and accidently killed a girl attending the show. Afterwards he didn't record again.

This song however was a huge hit when it came, my mom still loves it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:45am Webhamster Henry:

Cuica is an acceptable Autoharp substitute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

I know that Tornado won a national contest in Brazil in 1970 with that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

I know this because I can Google-Translate Wikipedia's Portuguese pages like a champ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:46am Brian in UK:

Could I guess that the B is Brazil or Brazilian?
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:46am doca:

Yeah it goes on the tradition of Wilson Simonal, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Also just read that Tornado was arrested after making a black-power fist salute from the stage at an Elis Regina concert. In order to be released, Tornado had to sing BR3 for the police.

Is this TRUE, doca?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Cuica + autoharp = nirvana
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:49am Brian in UK:

Doug, artistes names today are of superior quality.
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:50am sinner:

Ahhhhhh. What a WONDERFUL racket. Just what I needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Bless you, sinner!
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:51am doca:

Hahah I don't know, I guess not. Political consciousness unfortunately wasn't the most distinctive character of Brazilian popstars back on the day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

A QUESTION FOR ALL
Can anyone detect an improvement in the audio fidelity of today's show? The wonderful Jeff Moore, tech guru at WFMU, sent me some equipment to help clean up the audio in the transmission chain from my computer to the stream. I hear an improvement on my end for sure. (I also hear the imperfections of some of the crappier MP3s I'm playing.)
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:53am sinner:

Doug--I noticed immediately. Much crisper.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 9:54am northguineahills:

it's louder (just using my laptop speakers as it's too early to put on the hi-fi)
  Fri. 9/12/14 9:54am doca:

It seems better for me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:54am Andrew Waterloo:

Not sure, I'm working with laptop speakers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
Bless you twice!

@NGh
The new equipment (and a tweak to my settings) probably allows me to play it all a little louder with distorting. Not sure about that, but I guess that to be true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:57am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 9:58am Dominick:

Duke the team had a preview a few weeks back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
Andrew W is correct, Sex and Broadcasting is the new title. There was an advanced screening back at WFMU. I haven't seen it, but I have it on good authority that a late-1980s version of yours truly can be spotted in some archival footage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:12am Jeff:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:13am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Monica knows that if she ever needs to do a show remotely, there will always be a home for her here.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:19am Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:19am listener james from westwood:

"Sex and Broadcasting"? Okay....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:21am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:21am Andrew Waterloo:

Apparently it will make sense when you see the movie.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 10:22am duke:

I contributed to the FMU movie kickstarter. I have a t-shirt from it among my collection of FMU t-shirts. I lost track of what was happening with the movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:22am Jeff:

Whatever can be done to encourage Monica to play music for us must be done.

Doug, I'd encourage you not to push the levels through your A/D or out to the stream hotter than usual just because what's coming out of your playin' computer is cleaner... your lovely songs on your stream are louder than Chris M's wall of crunchy doomy metal on the WFMU stream. The WFMU stream's levels are actually pretty nicely judged for good sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:24am Jeff:

"Sex and Broadcasting" is a book about community radio which was very important to Ken and others.

Mr. C, Monica's sit in for Irwin yesterday was great, as expected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Advice well taken, Jeff. I am still using my Audacity visuals on my streaming machine to monitor levels. (Another part of operation I owe to you.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:25am Andrew Waterloo:

@duke, unfortunately I'm finding some of the Kickstarter movies take a long time and they're not very good at sending updates on Kickstarter. I just found out one of he movies I invested in had a screening, and I will probably find out they had a local one in their next update.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

When this track shifts to double-time, it will take your breath away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:26am Jeff:

It's all selfish, Doug. I enjoy your show, and want my personal listening experience to be as good as possible.

If it's also better for everyone else... well, that's fine too.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 10:27am still b/p:

Mmmmm......smooth
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

No, this track did not become an unexpected hit again, nine years later during the OPEC oil crisis.

I'm waiting for the first song to sample this: http://motherboard.vice.com/read/scientists-have-captured-the-sound-one-atom-makes

Leaf-blower guy is back. Friday seems to be a regular thing now. Windows, sadly, closed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 10:57am Andrew Waterloo:

My sympathies are with you Doug, I have a loud lawnmower guy that seems to be out mowing the lawn at every tranquil moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

I like the people who just hire a guy with goats to come eat their lawns. It's a win-win.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:00am doca:

What a beautiful track
  Fri. 9/12/14 11:05am Lore:

I will gladly accept donations of that Noah Howard LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

You and me both, Brother Lore.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:09am northguineahills:

Yep, turned on the hi-fi, it's crisper, and holy hell, the bass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Frank Lowe Quartet. Gentlepeople, start your drooling: www.triplepointrecords.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Oh goody good good, northguineahills!

I am so grateful and appreciative for the guidance and wise counsel from WFMU's web/tech maestro Jeff Moore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

No one quite knows what to say about Perry's line in this track: "International news from the Jews," if that's in fact what he's saying. It would seem to be a poor turn of phrase for Mr. Perry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:12am Andrew Waterloo:

those rail workers are in step with this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:15am Stanley:

not as good as 'drinking the blood of chickens from a rum glass'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

This Nigerian woman bills herself as "The Rappatainer."
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:20am still b/p:

You s'posed to drink the blood of chickens only from a pousse-café glass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:21am Jeff Golick:

I fondly recall seeing/hearing a female dj known as Spinderella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:22am Stanley:

and that's exactly what I'll be doing in an hour or so (except it will be beer from pint glasses haha)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:23am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and drumming road crew. Taking my nose off the grindstone long enough to say howdy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

There are very very few female rappers from African nations. There are even fewer who, like Sola Idowu, a.k.a. Weird MC, who are openly gay. She came out in 2000.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:26am northguineahills:

That Lee Perry track reminds of a Dead Prez line, "Bob Marley didn't die of cancer, 31 years ago I would have been a Panther, they killed Huey b/c they knew he had the answer, the news you hear on the tv is mothafuckin' propaganda."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:28am listener james from westwood:

A brave thing on Idowu's part, given sentiments in some parts of Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

No doubt very brave in Nigeria, Listener James. I'm pretty sure Ms Idowu lives in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

This funky thick Afrobeat comes from deepest, darkest Asheville, North Carolina, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:32am Carmichael:

Seriously, Doug? It sounds so ... foreign.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:32am still b/p:

Terminally ill Australian Christian lady in Malaysia just notified me she will transfer $25M to my account for me to distribute charitably. So it looks like I won't have to start the goat-loan-for-lawns thing I was starting to consider.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:32am Gary:

Wasn't fella born there? [sorry]
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:33am listener james from westwood:

Wow, yet another tick in the "Asheville is awesome" column.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:33am northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds like Willie & Paul are live from a helicopter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:41am Gary:

The vibrato voices are awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Ayayayayayayay agree, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:43am Carmichael:

I see curried goat all the time at my local Indian restaurant. Never got up the nerve to even taste it.
Avatar Fri. 9/12/14 11:43am still b/p:

I like how the "brank-brank" of the guitar is coming out of one channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:45am Gary:

I gotta take off to an interview now ... great show, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:58am listener james from westwood:

Ah, but did he make it into the brandy-new DSM-V? I'm guessing he's listed under the Obsessively Listenable Radio section. No known cure!
Many thanks for the obsessively listenable show, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 11:59am Stanley:

What's going on? Is it over already?
Sure freewheeled along today, Doug.
Many thanks once again.
Have a good weekend y'all.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/12/14 12:03pm Brian in UK:

Phew just back from the osteopath. That Stanley, never set your watch by him. Oh bugger.
