Happy Monday morning or what-have-you to Jeff, Jeff, and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/15/14 12:03pm Doug Schulkind:

For the record, this lovely David Murray track now playing is merely the pre-show intro to D:O! (The stream's DJTron 3000 knows exactly what it's doing!)
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:03pm βrian:

@James: How goes the wordsmithing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

We rolling! Hi hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:08pm listener james from westwood:

βrian: Starting a new editing project today, so still aligning my molecules to those of the authors to see the text through their eyes; thanks for asking!
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:13pm βrian:

Well, may the authors not be corporate or military types. I find their use of language graceless in the extreme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

They're corporate. Lots of passive voice in need of a stern dose of adrenaline to make it active.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

They may also be Tolkien fans. While the professor used "dwarves" as a plural for his race of doughty hill and mountain folk, Walt Disney—the person being discussed in this section of the book—spelled it "dwarfs" in the title of "Snow White."
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:27pm Jeff J:

Hey Brian, Listener James, Doug - plus any dwarfs, dwarves, and what-have-you!
  Mon. 12/15/14 12:27pm Doug Schulkind:

That BoB record is one of my all-time most very favorite. (I know I sound like a broken record.)

GACK! Sorry I mentioned a broken record!
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:30pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

I think this is the first time I've heard Mongezi Feza outside the context of Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom". Great set so far, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:33pm Jeff Golick:

Great, @Canterbury wood-elf! You're getting more than your fill of Feza this set -- he's been on every cut except the first one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:34pm listener james from westwood:

The authors also like "impact" as a verb. I predict this book will have more impacts than the surface of the Moon.

The former D&D player in me is happy that this thread now includes wood elves and dwarves. Bring on the hobbits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:35pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: my head would explode trying to edit something like that. Bless you and your forbearance.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:36pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

I was always a druid back in my D&D days. No one else was ever a druid, and i can no longer recall my motives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/15/14 12:37pm Doug Schulkind:

My heart bursts with love and breaks with sorrow in the presence of dear Mongs' music.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:37pm βrian:

One thing that rubs me the wrong way is the use of "reference" in place of "to refer to." To me they're distinct, but more important, it's inexplicably ugly.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:38pm βrian:

Sounds like that music impacted you, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:38pm Jeff Golick:

Recently watched a D&D-themed ep of the sitcom Community. Sweet, funny, and well-done, I thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:39pm Jeff Golick:

I once wrote on the Destination: OUT site that if I could only listen to one kind of music for the rest of my life, I would be ok with South African jazz.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:40pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

Chaotic neutral! (I think...)
  Mon. 12/15/14 12:44pm Dean:

The music referenced in these comments has been impacted by apartheid. Call that the passive aggressive voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Yes indeed. Whenever folks still try to stigmatize roleplaying games as some fringe interest, I point them at that episode. (And I'm alarmingly inured to such corporate-ese. Like a grizzled navy corpsman popping a dislocated shoulder into place.)
@Canterbury: A well-played druid was always a joy in a gaming session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:45pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: "Cones of Dunshire" is another good reference point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:45pm Jeff Golick:

...to refer to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

OMG that "Parks" segment had me on damn floor. They actually attempted to make a real-life version of this batshit game at the big annual roleplaying & boardgaming convention this year: www.vulture.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean: Not to be confused with the past exonerative, which William Safire coined w/r/t the phrase, "Mistakes were made."
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 12:50pm βrian:

Hah. I was just thinking of that the other day. Torture somehow occurred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 12:52pm listener james from westwood:

Procedures were vetted by Justice Department officials. (No self-dealing possible in that arrangement. Nope.)

afternoon Jeffs et all!
  Mon. 12/15/14 1:01pm Dean:

I have on my desk a worn, tattered slip of note paper on which is written, inter alia, "Cannonball Adderly Black Messiah." It's a record want list from about six months ago. Most of the material derives from WFMU programming. There's Bernie Worrell's Elevation, which I have yet to find. Also Flowers Corsano duo. I wonder if I should send this slip of paper to the North Pole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:01pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Jesse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:02pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:03pm Jeff Golick:

Jesseeeeeee!
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 1:03pm Jesse K:

Howdy James!
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 1:05pm βrian:

I must take that tuba line as my personal bed music. It will play for the rest of the day, from over my left shoulder, gently perplexing all who encounter me.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 1:07pm Jesse K:

@Jeff, I was having a hard enough time focusing my energy on work tasks this morning, now trying to juggle thinking about vaults full of rare South African jazz is sending me over the edge. These flutes are lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:09pm Jeff Golick:

Pianist here listed as Johnny "Manhatten" Taylor, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Leader Malinga plays alto & flute, and arranged, and sings.
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 1:11pm βrian:

My wife will be deeply jealous when I tell her I went to South Africa today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:12pm listener james from westwood:

Dean, I have a similar list, full of artists and song titles I heard on FMU in the pre-playlist-fave days, scrawled on a small Post-it that I really should scan or otherwise make more enduring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/15/14 1:14pm Doug Schulkind:

I have to run out. (Dammit.) Will devour the rest in archives. Thank you, Jeffs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:14pm Jeff Golick:

Doug Ran. And will miss Ran.
  Mon. 12/15/14 1:17pm Dean:

James, Yep. It'd be so much easier 1) to buy this stuff online, or 2) to create multiple synch'd digital copies of the list on some portable device to ease the burden of shopping in bricks 'n' mortar meat space. I see I have crossed out one title, a compilation of the recordings of Kippington Lodge. I used to keep a mostly classical recording want list in a notebook with v-e-r-y t-i-n-y lines, hundreds, if not thousands, of recordings culled from reviews in Fanfare magazine. It served its purpose well.
Avatar 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:19pm Malcolm:

just tuned in... excited to see the SA jazz you've been playing. I'll have to listen back to the show. I've seen Louis Moholo Moholo play in London a few times over the past few years and have been blown away each time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:31pm Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @Malcolm! We left some Moholo-Moholo on the cutting room floor this time, alas. You see him with Alexander Hawkins?
Avatar Mon. 12/15/14 1:37pm βrian:

This has a kind of noir fiction tinge to it.
Avatar 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:37pm Malcolm:

It was great to hear the Malinga stuff... I'll have to track down the record. I missed him playing with Alexander Hawkins but I saw the Louis Moholo Moholo Octet at the vortex on two occasions, and recently saw him performing as part of the Dedication Orchestra during the London Jazz festival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:39pm listener james from westwood:

For those keeping score, this book also has some comprise/compose issues. Though I admit I often need to double-check that one for my own writing.
Mon. 12/15/14 1:41pm dave from toronto:

that monk is f'ing gorgeous!
  Mon. 12/15/14 1:43pm Dean:

And consist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 1:50pm Jeff Golick:

Heya, @dave from toronto! No argument here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

Aw, that ending theme is extra-cruel today for this program being so good. Smashing show, gents!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 12/15/14 2:13pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: thanks, as ever, james!
