I might've had a salt and pepper pork chop years ago in one of the Chinese-operated Cuban places in Manhattan. But never in Montreal. Bucket listable?

So they're Cuban now? No more Chino Rican?
  3:29pm
Dean:

Two good Montreal restaurants come to mind. One, Toqué!, has evidently moved since when I dined there. The other was in Vieux Port, a bistro whose name I forget. Probably not there anymore. Also, there used to be a short-lived coffee shop, again name forgotten, that was just the most laid back cool place. Great coffee and CDs scattered around. I remember asking them to play Gesualdo.

During the Hot Sale, Laura, one dines déshabillé, of course!
  3:30pm
Dean:

At first I thought this Meldau was Hobgood's Union, a decent trio with Brian Torff and Paul Wertico, recorded exclusively on Naim, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Irwin:

Dean: I love piano trios who don't play "brunch jazz." I'll check out Hobgood's.

Not General Tso Chicken, General Tao Chicken. As in "the chicken that can be spoken is not the eternal chicken."
  3:33pm
Dean:

Their discography is only two disks, I'm pretty sure. First heard them at Sally's Place in Westport, CT, where Torff, according to Sally, used to drop in from time to time.
  3:36pm
Robert:

It's great how the commenting & music don't interfere with each other. I remember at least once going to a bar & grill specifically on nights they had music, then being annoyed at how the music interfered with our convers'n, then wondering to myself what the point was of going there then. Of course these days people would just text each other, so maybe the format here isn't that great an advantage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm

Did that piece fade out to a little bit of the overture from that famous Western musical whose name I forgot?

  3:42pm
Dean:

@Jeff: Yes and yes. Hobgood is most well known for his work with Elling. The Naim label, OTOH, is well known among audiophile fanatics for producing usually amazing, sometimes quirky, almost always expensive gear. Their recordings are very, very nice.
Avatar 3:43pm
V Priceless:

Mocean Worker - coolness; discovered them during the now-defunct CD101's format change into Chill music, which I thought was actually quite rad for a major market station to do. Thus, they (CD101) are history.
  3:44pm
Dean:

I'd forgotten the solo Hobgood record with Haden and Elling. It, too, is lovely.

Avatar 3:45pm
Jeff:

I wouldn't say the Naim *label* per se is known for the gear you provided so many appropriate adjectives for.

The gear, though - yes, aren't they known for often eschewing metal cases because they don't like how they sound, and for a series of possible upgraded power supplies to make the base component sound better and better?

  3:53pm
Dean:

Not aware of the case material issue. Upgradeable power supplies, yes. See, back in the '80s I believe there was a relationship of some sort b/w Naim and Linn. It went sour and a kind of competition ensued. One or the other of them introduced a new power supply -- could have been Linn's in its Kairn preamplifier (which resides in my system) -- and so war was waged. For all their peculiarities, I still admire Linn, even though they long ago priced me out of the market. There CD player, the Karik/Numerik, an early separate transport/DAC setup, remains for me one of the best digital playback systems ever. Alas, my transport nosedived, and there's no support. My Linn Sondek LPXII, OTOH, is up and running, vintage 1983 with most of the upgrades.

Looks like my guess a few yrs. ago was right, Irwin, as Prof. Elemental at least mentioned steampunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Fuzzy:

@Irwin: Thanks for clarifying -- your cynicism is well-placed, then. And yeah, shutting down vital city infrastructure before there's a real problem is pretty dumb. We could use less hype and more common sense from our government and media, but there ain't much money in that, is there?

Robert:

DeBlasio announced the shutting of the NYCTA before even conferring with them. It was then explained to him that in the case of snow, as opposed to flooding, shutting down would be counterproductive. Which meant that to save face, sort of, they ran the trains but didn't admit passengers! And Cuomo's anmt of criminal enforcement of no-driving was originally the entire state--although most areas of the state weren't even forecast to get much snow! That was quickly backed off to a quarter of the counties.
