Hello final Wednesday D:O.
Will the Magic Hour also be moving?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:02am AndrewC.:

Many happy and all that...
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 9:06am Jeff J:

Hey to everyone OUT there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:08am Gary:

Happy birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:11am doctorjazz:

This "Conference..." is REALLY Pretty.
Just jumped in, but seems a Happy Birthday is in order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Thanks! An' thanks for being here to celebrate with us!
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 9:12am Jeff J:

Hey @duke, @AndrewC, @Gary, and @doctorjazz - thanks for being here for the last Wednesday show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:16am Jeff Golick:

@duke: The Magic Hour is going on hiatus. Remains to be seen for how long...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:17am doctorjazz:

Mra also fun, would fit on a recent "post-bop" album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:23am Jeff Golick:

Yah, though those harmonies kind of give it away a little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Here's a link to the illo for Braxton's Comp. 51: www.restructures.net...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:31am Jeff Golick:

...and from Braxton's Composition Notes: "This is a big band music that relates to the toughness of the big band era (spirit)—as a forum to 'shout' about the strength of positive creativity and (growth). Composition No. 51 is conceived as an offering to and from those 'golden moments'—offered through and from that continuum. Here is a forum to 'get down' on—'either play or leave the room!' I have dedicated this work to [blank]"

As much as I (try to) dig Threadgill's recent stuff with Zooid, he's perhaps the main person I'd wish would go back to "playing the hits."
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 9:40am Jeff J:

This "hit" is so good it's enough to make anyone wish for more in the same vein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:41am doctorjazz:

Love the Sextett, but I do like the latest Zooid album (not some of the other ones, though).
We seem to be in AACM territory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Yes, I've enjoyed the new one, too, @doctorjazz, more than some of the previous.

We're never far from AACM territory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Here's your CT horn section: Jimmy Lyons, John Tchicai, Frank Wright, Enrico Rava, Tomasz Stańko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 9:46am doctorjazz:

Ahhh, the sweet sounds :) of CT!
  Wed. 1/27/16 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Happy birthday Jeff Golick!

John Cale & Terry Riley? Criminy, I should set my alarm.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:00am Jeff J:

Morning @JtotheK, @Artie, and @Brian - glad to have you all with us!
  Wed. 1/27/16 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Sorry I screwed up your playlist link in this morning's email blast. That's what I get for doing it at 5:45 in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug! And thanks most of all for sending those emails to begin with. Folks have managed to make their way here without trouble...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:04am doctorjazz:

I remember seeing CT at a now defunct in the Village...he had gotten a fabulous write up in the Times, stressing how it was no longer a sonic assault, he now played soft, quiet sections as well. Well, there was a line around the block, I thought I surely wouldn't get to see him, but the line kept moving, and we got seats. What I realized after a few minutes was, while he indeed did add softer sections to the music, THEY WERE JUST AS DISSONANT AS THE LOUDER SECTIONS, and the reason I got seated was that most people sat for 5 minutes, then got up and left! (was good for me, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:05am Jeff Golick:

Ha - thanks for sharing that, @doctorjazz! Might've been Sweet Basil?
  Wed. 1/27/16 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

Go go back and masturbate the corporate beast. Thank you for all the brilliant Wednesday mornings, Jeff and especially Jeff.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:07am Jeff J:

My fave CT audience experience was seeing him at the Village Vanguard. Guy at next table turns to me and says, "I read about this in the New York Times. I love piano, but my friend isn't so sure. Is this going to be like Billy Joel?"

I'll let you guess how long they lasted.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:08am Jeff J:

Thank *you* Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:10am Jeff Golick:

@JJ: that story is almost too perfect to believe.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:12am Jeff J:

Hand to the holy book of your choice!
Back in the days when the NY Times could really get you an audience and even draw in the bridge and tunnel folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:13am Jeff Golick:

Oh, I believe! It's the sort of detail one might not find credible in fiction, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:14am Jeff Golick:

This is the "terrible beauty" set.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:15am Jeff J:

For fiction, you'd have to replace "Billy Joel" with "Keith Jarrett" probably.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:17am Jeff J:

That would be Pharaoh Sanders on the saxophone.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:20am northguineahills:

Glad I can catch you guys for a few minutes. Gotta figure out how to hear y'all on Sundays.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:25am Jeff J:

Glad you could be here @northguineahills. Appreciate you stopping by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Ed Blackwell doin' his thing here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:33am Jeff Golick:

Andrew Cyrille & Alan Silva here with Lyons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:38am Jeff Golick:

...and Philly Joe Jones with Shepp [!!]
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:41am Brian in UK:

Well into your fifth year now. And your birthday, Jeff G. Congratulations. Can I have the Praline in plain chocolate from the second layer. Thanks.
  Wed. 1/27/16 10:43am Polyus:

Who is singing here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Thank you, @Brian! Jeff, can you pass this to Brian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:44am Jeff Golick:

@Polyus: the magisterial Jeanne Lee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:46am Brian in UK:

@Jeff J Saw the otherworldly Bill Evans at Ronnie Scotts around 1980. There were no numb nuts in the audience craving BJ that I heard. Jazz is a many layered joy, bit like those chocs.
  Wed. 1/27/16 10:50am Polyus:

Figures, I find a show I really like and it disappears shortly after. Always the last on my block to know.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:54am coelacanth:

greetings Jeffs and Outies
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Greets, @coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Ach, sorry, @Polyus! If you can't make it to Sundays at 9, perhaps the archive will help from time to time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 10:57am Brian in UK:

Trying to fix a wardrobe door whilst listening. Think I might take a powder on the door for now.
  Wed. 1/27/16 10:57am Polyus:

Ah, missed the Sundays at 9 part somehow. Perfect!
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 10:59am βrian:

That would be 8 a.m. Sunday in the heartland. A theoretical time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:00am Jeff Golick:

I figure the True and Pure Heartland is already up and at church by then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:00am Jeff Golick:

(Sorry, that was uncalled for.)
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:04am βrian:

Our ilk is of the sullied and debauched heartland, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:04am Jeff Golick:

The Pointer Sisters appear elsewhere on this Headhunters LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:05am AndrewC.:

Was Eddie Henderson a Headhunter? I was thinking how Headhunterish it sounded, and now you are playing them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Phewf, @βrian.
  Wed. 1/27/16 11:06am Polyus:

I can listen to d:O with one earbud while still pretending I'm listening to the sermon though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:07am Jeff Golick:

@AndrewC: it all kind of blurs. Mwandishi Band > Headhunters, plus Miles' various outfits. Don't think Eddie played with any Headhunter bands tho.
  Wed. 1/27/16 11:07am Polyus:

Just smile and nod, smile and nod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:07am AndrewC.:

@Polyus, do you have your glasses with the eyes painted on also?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Herbie only listed as producer on this Headhunters album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:09am AndrewC.:

This is the one with "God Made Me Funky" right? That is the perfect title.
  Wed. 1/27/16 11:10am Polyus:

@Andrew - nobody has caught on yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:11am Jeff Golick:

@AndrewC: exactamundo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:14am AndrewC.:

Some titles are so perfect and somehow so inevitiable, you can't believe they are real. You believe you must have come up with it yourself in some fever dream and always thought it would be a great song title. But no, there it is, on an actual record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:16am Jeff Golick:

The subtitle of "Rated X" is MORE COCAINE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:18am doctorjazz:

Great last Wednesday Birthday Celebration!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:23am JtotheK:

speaking of 'knob twiddlers' and aphex twin, i enjoy the album 'expert knob twiddlers' by Mike and Rich...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:23am Uncle Michael:

Howdee
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:24am AndrewC.:

@JtotheK apart from the one with all the burping on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Glad you are enjoying, @doctorjazz!

And lookee here, it's @Uncle Michael! How do you do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:27am JtotheK:

thanks for the alan shorter! i've never heard anything off of that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:29am doctorjazz:

The elusive Dogon A.D., I think that has been in print for about 15 minutes here and there over the past 30 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Yah, @JtotheK, tho it seems to be OOP as a CD, believe it's available as a reasonably priced mp3, if that's anything you can manage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:31am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: Dogon A.D. got a wonderful reissue from International Phonograph a few years ago: internationalphonographinc.com... I didn't think they were limited editions, but the Amazon CD price would seem to indicate that it was indeed a limited run.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:37am Uncle Michael:

I do pretty well, though my Wednesday mornings will soon be an aural wasteland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Awwww...though: more time to plan how to Hinky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:41am doctorjazz:

I know, I had checked it on Amazon and saw it was being resold for $60 used at the cheapest...
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:42am coelacanth:

this is my jam!!
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:43am Jeff J:

The Black Ark is one of those albums that desperately needs a nice reissue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:43am Jeff Golick:

Jam on it, @coelacanth!

Thought Black Ark got reissued, too...Bo'Weevil, a few years ago?
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:44am Jeff J:

I believe that was a "gray goods" affair and quickly OOP again, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:47am Jeff Golick:

Seems like Bo'W is still listing it, fwiw: www.boweavilrecordings.com...
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:47am coelacanth:

i need to increase my Noah Howard repertoire. i've had an increasing-in-tiny-increments knowledge of him forever; need to step it up! i have no excuse.
i'll check both of those out.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:48am Jeff J:

Alice C caught all sorts of flak at the time for overdubbing strings onto these performances - but we like 'em. Lets you hear John's playing through a different lens.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:48am coelacanth:

Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:51am Brian in UK:

Call me old fashioned but I never really got past JC's late 50s/early 60s quartets. Maybe because that was the first jazz I owned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Any new Trane, in 1972, must've seemed a revelation.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:52am coelacanth:

i'm sure it's good either way. i've never heard it without the strings; but i don't think they're inappropriate, and i wouldn't doubt John liking it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/27/16 11:52am Brian in UK:

"jazz I owned" What pretentious claptrap.
Avatar Wed. 1/27/16 11:53am coelacanth:

haha! i don't think anyone took it that way!
