This set all sounds like psychedelic pop to me.
Sort of blend of surf/folk/acid. Lately I think of it as Black Light music or Black Light Sunset Strip.

There was so much cross-pollination in music then.
A lot of Dick Dale's Surf has middle eastern motifs that became part of Surf in general; and The Beatles popularized sitar. Stones incorporated Moroccan music. There must be some great books about all of this.

Melinda, I don't think so, but maybe in psych collectors' universe there is some distinction. I hear the word "psych" these days way more than "acid," for what it's worth.

g, i think it may be partly because commercial music sucks so bad now (worse than ever in history, in my opinion) that many people who appreciate actual music are digging into the past - deep enough to discover things that similarly minded folks didn't dig deep enough to find during the 80s or 90s, for example, when things were pretty bad, but not unbearable (for most people).

I'm not paying close attention to commercial music these days but I do get the impression that it is awful compared to 80s and 90s commercial stuff. Also the internet makes it easier for people who dig to share their finds.

melinda: I think they're interchangeable;but maybe each drug has its sound,so maybe not. Acid was one hallucinogen and psychedelic describes the property of changing perception which a lot of drugs can do, each in different ways.

i think of "psych" as most of the first 6 songs in this set; and 13th floor elevators; the seeds; the pretty things; the count 5... when i think of "acid rock" i think of the jefferson airplane; the (early) grateful dead; the byrds, to some degree; big brother & the holding company...the "san francisco sound" in other words. maybe it's a little softer-edged than "psych" usually is (?) - but yeah, it's a fine line.

I first misunderstood 'acid' when I was younger as meaning 'harsh and penetrating' even though I knew it also referred to LSD, so it's not a good descriptor for me, even though the finer distinctions listed here do make sense.
