Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Ay! La musica es muy caliente!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:43pm melinda:

What would you call this style of music? Garage? I'm never sure what terms apply.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:45pm Little Danny:

The Art Guy is tough to call. Maybe fuzzed-out folk-rock? It's quite unusual.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:46pm Little Danny:

Hey folks - there's a severe thunderstorm coming this way, so if I disappear suddenly you'll know what's up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:50pm melinda:

I think folk-rock probably covers much of what I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 10:52pm coelacanth:

if i was paid to give it a genre, which i generally hate to do, i'd call this (& the last one, at least) "60s garage psych".
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:52pm geezerette:

Hope you've got a flashlight!

This set all sounds like psychedelic pop to me.
Sort of blend of surf/folk/acid. Lately I think of it as Black Light music or Black Light Sunset Strip.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:54pm geezerette:

With a sub-category of Surfadelic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 10:55pm coelacanth:

'seems to me,g, lately you think of it as tripping music!
- or, "fringe factory radio"!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:55pm melinda:

This confirms my suspicion that all these terms are rather fuzzy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:56pm melinda:

Surf is easier to identify.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:57pm Little Danny:

Melinda, I would totally agree. There's so little that actually fits into tidy categories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:57pm melinda:

Though the Ventures are mixing it up a bit here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 10:58pm melinda:

Did anyone ever form a surf band called the Dentures? Seems like it should have happened.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:03pm geezerette:

There was so much cross-pollination in music then.
A lot of Dick Dale's Surf has middle eastern motifs that became part of Surf in general; and The Beatles popularized sitar. Stones incorporated Moroccan music. There must be some great books about all of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:06pm coelacanth:

the current incarnation of the ventures does include one of the founding members. if he got others of his age to form the rest of the band, it would be up to him to re-name it "the dentures".
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:06pm Little Danny:

I think the remaining members of the Ventures would be well-advised to assume that name.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:07pm Little Danny:

Oh shit, you beat me to it 'Coel!
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:07pm geezerette:

,,,and this gorgeous Cambodian synthesis. The Vietnam War is part of the story. Very complex & I'm no musicologist.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:07pm Little Danny:

@geezerette - I don't think so. It needs to be done!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:08pm coelacanth:

haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:13pm melinda:

I didn't know the Ventures were still around in any form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:16pm coelacanth:

...but there still is plenty of cross-pollination... and back then it was happening so widely that it'd take a lot of intense research to trace. 'twould be a fun project though.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:18pm geezerette:

Danny, there's such a strong resurgence of Acid related music now that someone somewhere must be working on it. I've been thinking, wondering a lot lately, what the reasons are for this massive flashback. There are some parallels to Viet Nam era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:19pm melinda:

So is there a difference between psych and acid?
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:19pm geezerette:

Coel, yeah it would require funding.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:21pm Little Danny:

Melinda, I don't think so, but maybe in psych collectors' universe there is some distinction. I hear the word "psych" these days way more than "acid," for what it's worth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:24pm coelacanth:

g, i think it may be partly because commercial music sucks so bad now (worse than ever in history, in my opinion) that many people who appreciate actual music are digging into the past - deep enough to discover things that similarly minded folks didn't dig deep enough to find during the 80s or 90s, for example, when things were pretty bad, but not unbearable (for most people).
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:26pm Little Danny:

Right on, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:29pm melinda:

I'm not paying close attention to commercial music these days but I do get the impression that it is awful compared to 80s and 90s commercial stuff. Also the internet makes it easier for people who dig to share their finds.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:29pm geezerette:

melinda: I think they're interchangeable;but maybe each drug has its sound,so maybe not. Acid was one hallucinogen and psychedelic describes the property of changing perception which a lot of drugs can do, each in different ways.
I promise to shut up now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:32pm coelacanth:

i think of "psych" as most of the first 6 songs in this set; and 13th floor elevators; the seeds; the pretty things; the count 5... when i think of "acid rock" i think of the jefferson airplane; the (early) grateful dead; the byrds, to some degree; big brother & the holding company...the "san francisco sound" in other words. maybe it's a little softer-edged than "psych" usually is (?) - but yeah, it's a fine line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:33pm coelacanth:

- and, what g said.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:33pm geezerette:

Yeah,"Acid" is more specific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:35pm melinda:

I first misunderstood 'acid' when I was younger as meaning 'harsh and penetrating' even though I knew it also referred to LSD, so it's not a good descriptor for me, even though the finer distinctions listed here do make sense.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 7/7/16 11:41pm hyde:

as usual, this show is amazing. also as usual, i can only make a cameo appearance. thanks for the show, it's fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:41pm coelacanth:

i did too melinda! i thought "acid rock" was what i was to learn was "heavy metal"; which now of course is not "heavy metal" any more but "doom"! (ie: black sabbath)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/7/16 11:42pm coelacanth:

Danny i really like your bed music.

...hi hyde!

good night everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Fri. 7/8/16 12:03am melinda:

nite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/8/16 12:03am coelacanth:

- melinda, you nailed it "harsh and penetrating". if someone is too young or otherwise not inclined to know about the drug connection, it's a reasonable deduction!
Avatar 🎃 Fri. 7/8/16 12:04am Little Danny:

Thanks all, and thanks for listening! Love and an magical evening to y'all.
