A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  Thu. 11/17/16 9:40am JakeGould:

@MD: Election servers were not hacked. The report is about the timing of WikiLeaks information. If actual polling machines were hacked outright don't you think there would be bigger news?

The "hack" was simply that WikiLeaks got information and that was leaked at just the right time to discredit Clinton.

A bigger "hack" is the FBI chief gossiping about nothing in the days before the election.

These are not "hacks" but rather politics as usual but with new fancy tools.

Crap and malaise don't even begin to cover it. More like a black storm front of imminent nuclear doom looming over our heads every second of every day and/or the absolute and final discrediting of democracy worldwide. (China can now point at us and say, "See? It doesn't work. You don't want that. You end up with maniacs running things." China will now never have a democratic revolution.)

Built a fire pit for free a few weeks ago, will have friends over to burn kielbasa chunks on friday, then marshmallows...it is a one meter pit inside a two meter pit, so it can handle a normal fire or a huge bonfire.

Stop saying "grok."
Avatar Thu. 11/17/16 10:24am Wild Neil:

@Priscilla-yeah, the work conditions were awesome and I managed myself, but nobody really helped me with my projects at all! Well I had SOME help from my boss designing one of them, but its really really really hard to invent new products....as somebody has probably had the same good ideas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 11/17/16 10:24am annie:

@sphere: i'd SO watch that
Avatar Thu. 11/17/16 10:25am βrian:

As in, its atoms were reorganized? That's a pretty good euphemism. Extra credit for creativity is due.
Avatar Thu. 11/17/16 10:25am Wild Neil:

Grok is so 1974. Like "I grok Spock"....
Stranger in a Strange Land really made me think when I was 16....Heinlien wrote some really warped sex stuff involving incest with a daughter later on....he was kind of a perv really...

@Neil, Canadian liberal talk radio?!? What a concept. We clearly disagree on a lot, but I am heartened that you come here civilly and get along, and that you listen to both sides. The biggest problem might be each side engaging in its own self-imposed media blackout (and fake news stories made up by Macedonian teens as clickbait for Americans... yes, that's a thing).

I read "On Beauty" and "Autograph Man" when they came out in paperback a long time ago. I haven't read anything she's published since. In my admittedly foggy memory, I recall liking them both, "On Beauty" more than "Autograph Man", but much preferred "White Teeth" to both. I will certainly look into Muriel Barbery, and any other book recommended by yourself!
  Thu. 11/17/16 11:10am Listener Robert:

Remember the 1st time they used (not just tested) the EAS, at least in NY metro? It was the early 1990s to alert of a tropical depression or nor'easter -- a garden variety cyclone that mostly meant a lot of rain, we'd had MUCH more severe weather many times in the past. But they'd never used the EAS (or its predecessor EBS) for it before. The difference seemed to be that until the Berlin Wall & USSR were gone, they were afraid that the EAS would spook people into thinking it was a nuclear war, which is after all the primary reason it was instituted.

In the years since, it's gotten very little use. I think maybe a reason they used it that time was to make sure people would NOT panic from residual cold war fears.

Apropos of your discussion of "first cut roulette": note that the first/title cut on Leonard Cohen's recent and sadly now last album "You Want It Darker" is compelling, and in keeping with these dark times.

There's a burned CD of that album in the New Bin.

A "caravan park" seems vaguely romantic, doesn't it? It evokes a line of dromedaries silhouetted against a sandy horizon.

That amazing Elyse Weinberg song sent me poking around on the web just now and I found a track or two off of her 2009 comeback record under that name -- except for the production, it surprisingly really failed to suck. Back to listening to the Mighty Fun 91.

Much of this show has been so lovely and light - it's been balm for a bruised soul.
