Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Cheers Danny, had this drunken vision not so many hours ago of Joe Frank & MES arguing over the cab fare at the pearly gates, much to my buddies amusement. Those two would indulge in great conversation I'm sure.

![]() g Thanks for the well wishes (10.11) i've just got the unusually heavy sofa off my car roof and into the house. it took 2 people 50 minutes and ...it doesn't fit! -i think i'll have a drink. |
![]() |
![]() That 'Manhattan Latin' lp is one I've seen people discuss, never heard anything off of it before tonight. Pretty cool. |

a brief hello. have that drink, coel. |
Thu. 1/25/18 11:05pm
Dean:
Heard Palmieri at Yoshi's in Oakland, and yeah, he was cooking. Probably thirteen years ago or so.
![]() |
![]() you can call him ray, or you can call him jay ... |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, seems a no brainer, line up some folks to catch him (doesn't say what context he's playing in, solo, small band, guessing not a big band or it would say. Never have seen him... |
![]() |
![]() This Saturday night, will see Roscoe Mitchell with the Matthew Shipp trio, should be fun! Gotta crash, work is rediculously busy, need my beauty sleep, bye all! |
![]() |
![]() ...i don't know much of popol vuh either; maybe 15-20%? i really don't know...but i really like the album "in den gärten pharaos/aguirre", which is 2 albums now available as one release, is a favorite of mine. the 2 albums are each short and they work together...if anyone's interested. |
![]() |
![]() hey hyde! |

Thu. 1/25/18 11:22pm
Dean:
A 1990 Chicago Tribune article refers to Byrd as "the Satchmo of the steel guitar." http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1990-08-27/features/9003120110_1_hawaiian-music-pawn-steel-bar
![]() |
![]() it's so obvious the influence for the Hal Davis track... beyond "just influence"; but it's still worth it! very good. |
![]() |
![]() great ordells track. |

Little Danny:
Do you know anything about the Ordells, Jason? I'm coming up empty-handed |
![]() |
![]() ...and i was looking to see what album that o'jays track might've appeared on, and i confess i had no idea they had 29 studio albums. i have 4 and i thought i had a respectable representation haha! |
![]() |
![]() i know the flip of sippin' is a groovy instrumental track... |
![]() |
![]() . . . and my (admittedly brief) internet research just now finds that Give The Drummer's own Funky 16 Corners has a blog entry for "sippin' a cup of coffee". |
![]() |
🎃
Thu. 1/25/18 11:33pm
Little Danny:
@coel: oh man they recorded so much. Talk about knowing about 5% of a discography |
![]() |
![]() i liked the ordells song too. never heard of them before. |
![]() |
![]() From F16C blog: "The Ordells 45 was released in 1967 and as far as I can tell they never recorded another note. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover that they had nothing at all to do with the instrumental, which leaves us with one, absolutely incredible performance, committed to vinyl and then largely forgotten. I have seen several references that indicate that ‘Sippin’ a Cup of Coffee’ has similarly affected many others, and that it may have something of a lowrider following, but aside from that, it remains the property of soul collectors." |

Thanks for the research Jason! |
Thu. 1/25/18 11:39pm
Dean:
I'm finding references in, e.g., Billboard, to Richard Rome, the arranger. In 1968 he formed Allert Prods. with Al Martino's personal manager.
![]() |
![]() we owe larry (permanent, ongoing) thanks for his fantastic blog! |
![]() |
![]() it always makes me sad. somebody lied; record company had no faith; no capital; somebody didn't come through; had to get on with life....who knows what might've been. |
![]() |
🎃
Thu. 1/25/18 11:41pm
Little Danny:
@dean: Yeah Rome was a pretty steady Philly-area arranger/composer type. I think he was Philly area |
Thu. 1/25/18 11:41pm
Dean:
Curiously, also in '68, he set up a prod'n co., Producers, Inc., with a fellow named Brooks Odell...
![]() |
![]() this axelrod album is one that i don't tire of. |
![]() |
![]() @dean - brooks odell sounded familiar ... and it's because i have a 45 of his, 'watch your step' on gold records. |
Thu. 1/25/18 11:43pm
Dean:
Yes, evidently Odell was quite prolific. Coincidence, I assume. Rome must have been Philly area.
![]() |
![]() @dean -- off topic, but i did enjoy the nixon book you suggested. i chuckled picturing him on a profane tirade while listening to 'victory at sea'. |
Thu. 1/25/18 11:47pm
Dean:
Good to hear, @JtotheK! Lotsa chuckle (or weep) moments in that one.
![]() |
![]() yeah, i was hoping the author would have made up a story about Nixon putting Quaker Oats on his enemy list because they refused to admit he was the model for the 'Quaker Oats' guy on the container. |
![]() |
![]() back to the Ordells ... scrolling down on the F16C blog finds this comment: "The song was co-written by Lee Andrews and sang by The Ordells. The lead was superbly delivered by the late Henry (need Ronald) Eleby, backed by Moses (nee Thomas) Eleby, Thomas Matthews, Archie and Clifford (last names not known). As you correctly stated, they didn’t record another song, although they were at least as good as the more well known Philadelphia groups and more polished than most. Sadly, through bad management, it all fell apart not long after the release of the song. Ronald was briefly recruited by Motown to replace the late great Eddie Kendricks before they finally went with Damon Harris (again management). I am proud to say that I am the youngest brother of Ronnie and Tommy Eleby." |
![]() |
![]() i like a surprise ending! |
![]() |
![]() thanks for the tunes, danny. good evening everyone. |
![]() |
![]() Thanks Danny! have a good night everyone |
