Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Little Danny:

What's for dinner tonight, friends? We have a garden full of late-season arugula, so it's been nothing but salads for the last few days. I LOVE arugula but still don't know what to do with the excess, except pesto
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
coelacanth∅:

if i had more money i'd have much too many albums. even as it is i'd like to unload maybe 1000.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth∅:

i love arugula but i ate so much for so long i got tired of it. i had an endive salad a few minutes ago (w onion, parsley, walnuts, olives oils, lemon juice, ume vinegar and fresh sage)
now i'm eating gortons (?) breaded fish fillets.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

it goes well with eggs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

Oh, endive salad. Excellent. I'm starting to feel the same way about arugula. It springs up like a weed here
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

yum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Little Danny:

yes it does, chresti! Just wish there were more ways to freeze it besides pesto. Perhaps there are...
Avatar 10:23pm
northguineahills:

My tomato plants have taken over my yard. I have over a dozen of ghost peppers ready to harvest, and, I'm scarred of, about 10 Carolina Reaper peppers are about ready. My herbs mostly died this month, as, since I'm against monoculture, I intersperse my plantings w/ native wildflowers, and they eventually overshaded my herbs. (But I got a lot while they lasted).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Little Danny:

Jealous of your tomato sitch, NGH. All of those Scoville-breaking peppers terrify me, basically anthing that requires that I wear gloves to process
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
coelacanth∅:

arugula grows so easily that after i harvested a million times more seeds than i or she will ever use my sister threw them onto the space between a stone wall and the street where she can't seem to make grass, clover, wild strawberry, thyme or anything else she's tried grow. it came up and covered a good patch along the road. had to be mowed periodically!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Little Danny:

That doesn't surprise me coel! Arugula has been re-seeding itself in the thin soil layer that lies just above our backyard weed barrier. It's like 1/4" thick at the most, this layer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Little Danny:

Having so much arugula is normally not an issue. So what do I do with it all?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
chresti:

I wonder if it is good dried
nettle is what grows around here, if it rains
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah, doesn't freeze well, like basil does. doesn't transplant well either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Little Danny:

Huh, don't know chresti. What part of the country are you in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Little Danny:

yes and yes, coel. I've tried both!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
coelacanth∅:

does burdock grow where you are, chresti?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
melinda:

I have no advice re: arugula. I'm a tired gardener so I never end up with an abundance of anything except maybe dandelions and borage. I just let things grow and don't worry about harvesting everything. I let one quadrant of my garden get taken over by dandelions and ate them all summer.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
chresti:

not sure if burdock grows wild here
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

I buy burdock root sometimes because it's tasty and good for liver function but after 1 day it gets bendy and hard to peel.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
coelacanth∅:

your kidneys thank you melinda! (your liver too if you use the roots)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
chresti:

dandelion in abundance here
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti i've never peeled burdock! i just scrub it good and cut off any dark spots.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
melinda:

Every now and then I dig up a root but then my follow-through is bad.
I suppose I could try just scrubbing the burdock but it looks dark and gnarly.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
chresti:

I peel the outer part with a peeler and add it to brown rice
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i said chresti but meant melinda -sorry! (about peeling burdock)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
melinda:

The aggressive plants tend to be ones with great medicinal or nutritional value.
Japanese knotweed is a concentrated source of resveratrol as well as having antibiotic properties, it's used for Lyme disease among other things.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
coelacanth∅:

you do have to really scrub it.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
melinda:

Dandelion is bitter but burdock is sweet and nutty.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
chresti:

the markets have it- I need to study it before looking in the wild
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

yeah i can't eat dandelion root. call me a wimp if you must! i can shake goldenseal root powder directly into my mouth but dandelion, no.

Hi! Been here from the git-go, but was driving home so couldn't post up early tomorrow, this is my little break.

Hard to grow food in the garden here in lovely new Jersey, lots of deer wandering around, hear they eat it all. Basically grow green weeds...

Definitely fall into the record hoarding group... I don't think I could listen to them all if I listened 8 hours a day before I leave this world .
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
chresti:

dandelion should be cooked, I think
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

you have mushrooms in Jersey?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
doctorjazz:

Just ate too clog my arteries, kosher pastrami, fries, will die happy.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
melinda:

I find dandelion greens unpleasantly bitter but eating a handful raw is easier than chopping and cooking regular greens.
@coel I too have eaten goldenseal powder straight. Blecch! Knotweed powder was worse. Tasted like moldy floorboards from an old barn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Little Danny:

Doc! Glad you could make it! Got some Tord Gustavsen Trio lined up for the second hour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

i spend many hours cutting japanese knotweed. i even reach over into the neighbor's yard and cut their's down. i likely have lyme disease too but i haven't researched how to prepare it. the weed is not going away though so i'll get to it.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

Chresti I'm sure we must have mushrooms here in Joisey, see them around sometimes, why?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

oh melinda that's sad news. free medicine that i can't stomach. that does sound worse than bitter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

This green/s talk is super interesting. I will be re-reading when I'm not scrambling to cue up 45s. Love all manner of greens here. Again they truly fascinate me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

I've prepared delicious greens from dandelion leaves before
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth∅:

chresti all kinds of mushrooms in jersey (& upstate ny, where i live, and in ct, where my sister's property has a wide variety, including hideously ugly and smelly but fascinating ones, morels and oysters, etc etc)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
chresti:

maybe you can have them with pastrami, doc
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
melinda:

@coel it would take some effort to prepare but powdered root (the part you ingest) can be put in capsules.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:00pm

i've gathered shopping bags full of meadow mushrooms in nj, and seen 2 different species of hallucinogenic shrooms in abundance.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm

is knot weed like kudzu?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Little Danny:

Always delighted to inspired your worst impulses, doc!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
melinda:

@chresti it doesn't smother trees like kudzu, but it is considered invasive. I think it is beautiful, stalks look sort of like bamboo and leaves are big.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda i've read that people in parts of asia eat the aerial part of knotweed, just very young ones. that's not so medicinal though?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Little Danny:

Very inspiring discussion! The Cool Blue Flame, your Thursday night home to hot foraging talk

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:10pm

knotweed is gorgeous when it flowers too. it pains me every year when i cut all those flowers off to let them rot before they go to seed.
even doing that, it still would eventually take over any and all land by the roots spreading.

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

Danny, a friend recognised them. both were psilocybin species so, relatively safe. we also saw endless fairy ring mushrooms, which i heard were mildly hallucinogenic but i don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Little Danny:

Awesome. Didn't know psilocybin species grew that far north, coel
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
coelacanth∅:

they were past their prime or i might've harvested some. i was in my early 20s then, still dropping acid and such...as it turned out i never tried psilocybin until i was in my 40s - years after i swore off hallucinogens.
