Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

See y'all at the top of the hour! Godspeed Evan

Damn. Just started spinning Sun Ra/Walt Dickerson Visions on the home system. It's among my top five favorite albums. But the advent of CBF prompts me to defer and listen live to this show on the cheesy Chromebook, which is how I luck to receive radio.

Why don't you get a pair of speakers fer yer laptop? My Bose laptop speakers are acceptable
  Thu. 1/31/19 9:21pm Dean:

In a word, LD, snobbery. I like *really good* sound reproduction, as in totally unaffordable, last-millimeter-of-fidelity-is-worth-a-second-mortgage sound reproduction. I also like the sound of crappy radio. Reminds me of my youth.
  Thu. 1/31/19 9:23pm Dean:

I can't afford the former; still, I have approached nirvana over the years. I can't retrieve the latter, because I long ago got rid of my battery-driven transistor radio that I'd nestle under my pillow. So, I compromise.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 9:33pm Little Danny:

@Dean: I respect that purity and commitment even if I don't totally adhere to it. My Sansui AU-999 is hopefully the last receiver/amp I'll ever need. Acceptable if not completely satisfactory. Same for my Technics turntables and carts/stylii. My record collecting choices - most often lo-fi '50s and '60s 45 obscurities - put logical limits on the audiophile necessities
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 9:33pm Little Danny:

Haha, hi Chresti!

Back in a little bit, gotta get my shit together here
  Thu. 1/31/19 9:37pm Dean:

It's very difficult for me not to start the endless discussion about stereo equipment. Very difficult. In a nutshell, almost daily I tell my kids I want better amplifiers, and that one of the hurdles to obtaining them is, e.g., the expense of child care, etc. I don't think this diminishes their self-esteem. Rather, it helps them realize HOW MUCH I SACRIFICE to make them happy.

Kinda bummed it doesn't reflect my extensive use of the Ethiopiques compilation series, but hey
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i almost never use headphones. (except when i work on my own recordings) decent speakers are essential to me.
  Thu. 1/31/19 10:25pm Dean:

Contra Anthony Cordesman, I believe speakers are perhaps the least important factor in a good system. Any good speaker is ... pretty good. A shitty amp will never rise to the occasion. And of course the source is all. I proved that (to myself) recently by replacing one cheap CD transport with another.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 10:28pm fleep:

The phone here gets paired up with Anker Bluetooth speakers, which pack a decent punch for their size. Conflicting entertainment streams (like A Star is Born with Janet Gaynor vs. this, right now) means a lot of headphone action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

i have old genesis speakers. the last of their heavy, hardwood cabinets and a particular configuration with a passive radiator that i think is excellent. but the foam is in a bad way.

Not seeing how to focus on one show. (This is a common phenomenon with UX designer folks. They don't bother to research how people actually view their data, and understandably so, because it takes a lot of work to do that research!)

When people mention newest Star is Born and they've "heard" it's a remake, I take a silly pride in knowing the three earlier actor pairings.
  Thu. 1/31/19 10:33pm Dean:

Old Genesis speakers?! Wow!

My faves have been Dunlavy SC-IV, but I love my old Audio Physic Spark III, too.

The DJs menu guides me to "DJ Profile," which suggests I can view information about the DJ, not the show. Nevertheless, Clear Blue Flame does not file there, nor does Little Danny. Folks, this requires thought.

Pretty cool set, LD.
I stick those things in my ear every night, fall asleep with custom in ear monitors custom molded to my ears .. Heaven!
@Dean, it's all matching gear of course. An all Linn system has the advantage of already being matched. I use A Krell amp with Thiel speakers to good results, and have heard Krell amps diving Soundlab speakers producing fabulous sound (I'd need a nice inheritance for that system, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 10:38pm Little Danny:

re: your tech feelings
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 10:38pm Little Danny:

@Dean
  Thu. 1/31/19 10:45pm Dean:

I always enjoyed Thiel speakers, but never quite took to them. Again, though, speakers aren't all that important. Many are very, very good. Krell amps, though -- I mean the coffee-table sized ones featured in the late '90s at Peter Singer's store in Manhattan -- are so-so. Hyped, in other word.

I've heard about custom molded earbuds, but still...in your ears? They have zero to do with reproduction of a live performance. They're merely pushing data into your ears, while when we attend live music the sounds fall upon our entire bodies. I really don't get it. (I'm also opposed to the 'reverse colostomy bag' nature of earbuds and headphones.)

You are exactly right about Linn and matching, which is a "duh" observation, but it doesn't drive the market, does it?
  Thu. 1/31/19 10:48pm Dean:

(My "What?," by the way, was a weak attempt at humor in response to Franco's comment about being hearing-impaired due to attendance at live shows.)

Re: fidelity, you have it wrong. The "fidelity" of the source material is what it is, no more, no less (short of digital intervention). But a good 'table/arm/cartridge will expose information your system might not reveal, even given the quality of the disk.

I think I agree with you, Dean, but the poor production quality (is that better?) of some of my chosen 45s nonetheless puts a definite ceiling on my audiophile pursuits. Personal choice over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:02pm coelacanth∅:

within a year after high school i'd bought a nice amplifier, a nice cassette deck, and a nice turntable. (i was using a heath kit tuner my father put together years before) -and i had absolutely shitty speakers.
so i saved around $5-600.00 for new ones and went to the store. i happen to get there when genesis had discontinued their entire line of hardwood speakers and the guy tried hard to get me into the new genesis, that were made of molded plywood of some sort. none of them sounded great to me, and they started at like $650.(?) i was about to leave and he mentioned the very last pair of the old genesis they had, which was kind of hiding somewhere. i plugged in to the same system i'd tried the others with & they sounded beautiful!. $450.00 for the pair. same ones i'm using right now.
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:03pm Dean:

Question begging, I'm afraid. We don't know if the production quality is poor until we extract and play back as much of the information as we can. Obviously, it might be empirically correct to characterize the material you play as having generally been badly recorded. But we don't know if we're not optimizing the reproduction.

By which I mean, I want to spend ungodly sums of money on stereo equipment.

It's probably better not to get the Audiophile bug. I think I did a better job filling in the missing details is my mind before getting the bug For instance, I had no problem listening to 1920s King Oliver and hearing /feeling the band with older recording tech and bad fidelity. Audiophiles tend to only want to listen to well recorded material

I've always had-- and have relied on for long product lifetimes -- standard medium low-end consumer stereo equipment. Still use Pioneer SX434 receiver bought in 1975, I think. When I finally had to replace old deteriorating KLH speakers after 20 years, one salesman said models in my price range should only be expected to last five years. I says, " Excuuuuuse me?" The Kenwoods bought at the time are now about 25 years old.

(I would drive them nuts by asking to play a Willem Breuker Kollektief LP I'd bring along)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:22pm Little Danny:

I really wanna play my Singleman 45 right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:23pm Little Danny:

Hold on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:23pm coelacanth∅:

i remember when i got "l.a.woman" for xmas when i was little and it sounded so good on my crappy stuff. my older brother the first time our parents were both out said let's put la woman on dad's stereo
oh man! i was too young for an orgasm but Wow!
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:24pm Franco Twinkie:

When Little Feat recorded that record they were the Bruce Lee of boogie bands. They could slap your ass in a hot minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:25pm Little Danny:

Oof, sorry for the erratic levels. Records!
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:26pm Dean:

Long ago I bought (with my own dollars) Zubin Mehta conducting the LA Phil's Holst Planets. It's one fucking beat-up LP in my collection. The sound is radiant.

I live two blocks from one of the engineers of that album, Franco. The original painting for the over hangs in his store. He has stories to tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

i deeply love a significant % of Leonard Cohen; but sonically? who cares! that's not what that music is about!
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:26pm Dean:

^cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:27pm Little Danny:

I stand with Coel
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:28pm Franco Twinkie:

So you told me. Next time I'm in Berkeley, I must bow down in it's presence.
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:29pm Dean:

My only complaints about Leonard Cohen are 1) his lyrics, 2) his voice, and 3) his tunes. Other than that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

i love this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:32pm doctorjazz:

I love lots of Cohen stuff too but it's definitely an either it grabs you or it doesn't kind of thing. Like Dylan Like Tom Waits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:34pm Little Danny:

OMG Dean

But I still love you
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:34pm Dean:

Except neither Dylan nor Waits is "an either it grabs you or it doesn't" for me. I selectively adore Dylan and Waits. Cohen? What's all the hoopla about? He has a schtick, as I hear him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:34pm doctorjazz:

Like this Singleman (which I love )!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

it sounded great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:35pm fleep:

Cohen is a phase you go through, like Khalil Gibran or Ayn Rand. In time, if you're lucky, you get over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:36pm doctorjazz:

Dean, you have to learn to express yourself. Let it out !You'll feel better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

that's a traditional song though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

(actually composed by Michio Miyagi. otherwise entitled "sakura hensokyoku")
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:41pm doctorjazz:

In ears don't get the room sound like a good speaker system can, true But the room /soundstage information is there in the recording (if it's decent), you'd be surprised how much you still get. And the detail you hear on a good in ear is amazing .. Much more that all but the most expensive speaker systems .
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Who would drive across the county in a small car with, Leonard Cohen or Exene Cervenka? Please choose one.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 1/31/19 11:41pm chresti:

I haven't warmed up to Cohen, yet. Took awhile with Waits, I found him a bit schticky early on
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:44pm Dean:

Detail is overrated with respect to live shows. Real live music doesn't produce "detail."

I'm no fan of Exene, either. In fact, I named one of my bands M in response to the silly X her band adopted. X. Really? You named your band X? I'm having a hard time thinking of any name more stupid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:45pm coelacanth∅:

Waits is still pretty Schticky. i like most of his stuff that's not slow; and cringe at most of his stuff that is. (like most of his early stuff. a rare case of someone who got better in time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:46pm Little Danny:

Hahaha that is so Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

that band would've been at least okay if she never sang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:47pm coelacanth∅:

(but i feel similarly about Grace Slick too)
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:47pm northguineahills:

weird, I like all things Cohen. Pretty much most Dylan except which that started to creep into my lifetime, Waits, I love, but I won't die on that hill.
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Thank you. Before I posed the question I said to Chresti - watch this.
Avatar 🎃 Thu. 1/31/19 11:49pm chresti:

Heh. Loving this show and this song, thank you thank you LD!
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:49pm Dean:

My take on Waits is that his early work was gritty enough to merit attention. Middle period got intriguing and exploratory, for lack of a better characterization. Later on, I sensed he was running out of *good* ideas, if not exactly ideas altogether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

ngh, i think most if not all Cohen songs are good, if not great. the problem he suffered through over and over (and over) was producers with some crazyass ideas that didn't jive with Leonard himself most of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:50pm doctorjazz:

Detail isn't necessarily what you hear in concerts; I've never heard a stereo system that was anywhere close to a good live show They're all different animals imo. Heard Andy Statman this last weekend in a nice small room, good sound there, but I had a seat off to the left, balance not great Still loved it .
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:50pm Little Danny:

Y'all are killing me right now

Leonard Cohen's voice, songs, and lyrics are the best. At least early on. Then it gets, um, trickier
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:50pm Dean:

I'll repeat myself, but "Goddammit," listening to the music "from the good old days," this Harmonia, is an utter joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:50pm Little Danny:

Thank YOU chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

well, Danny we have a team of 3 at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

Leonard let himself be manipulated a lot in the studio. i happen to like most of the bg voices on his first 3 albums, but he didn't. same with other embelishments. he hated most of it but let it slide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:54pm Little Danny:

@coel: Maybe I'll wrap with something from Songs of Love and Hate just to be sassy
  Thu. 1/31/19 11:54pm Dean:

See, doctorjazz! You're depicting the *live show* you attended in terms of audiophile bullshit like "balance" and such. Huh? Your job is not to hear the live show as you might have heard a good recording.

I have heard stereo systems that make me feel (almost) like I'm *there*, my own included. The question remains, what is "there"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:54pm doctorjazz:

Thanks Danny, great stuff , another bleary eyes Friday coming ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:55pm Little Danny:

Coel is spot on re:Cohen
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:55pm Little Danny:

Doc: thank you sir, happy to contribute to a rough Friday morning
Avatar Thu. 1/31/19 11:55pm Franco Twinkie:

No dishes or noses were broken, so I guess we had a good time. Thanks for letting us crap up your house, Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:56pm doctorjazz:

That's the point, that audio stuff (which I Do do) is a construct, one way of listening, but not the only way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:57pm coelacanth∅:

the brilliance of his lyrics are at least at the level of Dylan, much of the time.
"dress rehearsal rag" is an absolute masterpiece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 1/31/19 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Franco Twinkie, Clinical Psychologist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/1/19 12:00am doctorjazz:

I'd go along with the Waits sequence, loved the early stuff, found the mix stuff (was it Ribot in guitar ) interesting, then lost interest. Like most Dylan (till his Christian time ,anyway), and Cohen
Night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/1/19 12:01am coelacanth∅:

damn that snuck up.
Thanks Danny! Excellent program as usual.
sweet dreams y'all
  Fri. 2/1/19 12:02am Dean:

Yeah, Ribot and Cohen et al. A nice time.

I'm mildly fond of the Christian Dylan, but for purely personal reasons. I was working a record store when Slow Train Coming emerged.
Avatar Fri. 2/1/19 12:03am northguineahills:

Howdy thanks, LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/1/19 12:04am coelacanth∅:

Thanks and luv to y'all. Loads of great discussion tonight; it's appreciated
