My intro to WFMU was when I tuned into The Old Codger while driving one day in 1990.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:20pm Ike:

Just spun the FM dial in college looking for indie rock. Heard Laura Cantrell and Dave Mandl. Didn't like Laura at first. Eventually her show grew on me. Dave Mandl's show made me say, "What the fuck is this crazy shit?!" but in a good way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:20pm joe:

I became aware of the WFMU due to the press it was receiving during the "troubles" somewhere in late 1989 early 1990. It was one of many stops down at that end of the dial becoming a more avid listener a year or two later when I was sure to catch Bronwyn's Truckstop Teaparty every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:21pm AnAnonymousParty:

I think I've told this before. KMOX AM 1120, the Mighty Mox in Saint Louis had a morning drive show that had a sort of daily contest where you could call in to win something mundane or lose something in the form of being subjected to humiliation by a sound clip, which usually this guy singing badly about a 'Lover Without a Cause'. I really wanted a copy of that song, for reasons that is a much longer story. A few years later a web search led me to 'Incorrect Music'. My life has never been then same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:22pm Carmichael:

Who is Cyrus?
  Wed. 3/6/19 4:24pm Cyrus:

I am. Thanks for asking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:24pm Carmichael:

I was cruising the net looking for some different sounds, and I somehow found FMU. This was probably '90 or so, when I was working at UC Davis. Coincidentally, Liz Berg was the station manager there at KDVS.

Avatar Wed. 3/6/19 4:26pm HarktheUmpire:

I don't even remember... It must've happened been while I was scouring the interweb cause I live in Berlin. I struck gold sometime back in the summer of 2013. But I don't remember what show I tuned into or even if I liked it or not. It might've been amEdeo. In which case I did like it. Must've been his conversations with Therese that got me hooked. Found loads of other good shows soon after, like this one, and I plan to leave never. What a story!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:27pm The Oscar:

Funny aside: WFMU actually served as my introduction to YouTube, back in the Beware of the Blog days.

Avatar Wed. 3/6/19 4:30pm Parq:

I had just moved to New Jersey from Brighton MA at the end of summer 1979, and was in despair at the state of NYC radio. Dial-hopping down at the bottom end, like a lot of folks, I caught WFMU for the first time in the final minutes of Irwin's show. Within minutes, I knew I had found what I was looking for. In addition to Irwin, other early favorites included the Immigrant, Jim Price and John Narucki. Wasn't much longer before I became a fan of other (now) old timers like Kelly, Brainan and O'Toole. I made my first marathon pledge the following spring, and have never looked back.
  Wed. 3/6/19 4:30pm Laura L:

Reception was awful, but I tuned into Irwin's Atrocious Music program I guess about 25 years ago but don't recall how I found out about it in the first place. I gotta go now, got to leave early today, but thanks, Irwin!

  Wed. 3/6/19 4:36pm jmr3:

I think I heard it in 94 or 95 driving through New Jersey from Vermont to DC after seeing the Dead just twisting the dial - unless there was another station that would have been playing a mix of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" with the first moon landing and who knows what else. Could have been People Like Us or people like People Like Us . . .
Discovered again about 10 years later on the internet and thought - this MUST have been THAT station!!!

Looking for a Storyteller to listen to ?
Need some Southern Inspirational Dada ?
Want something uplifting, affirmative, intriguing, nostalgic, postmodern, futuristic, naive, philosophical ??

Joseph Campbell said we are the story-telling monkey: we need that
...but we are having trouble getting our Story together @ this time in History.
...Well - Hearty White is among those pointing the direction to a solution to this evolutionary challenge.
...I mean that.
  Wed. 3/6/19 4:51pm Listener Robert:

Thanks, Jeff. Far from the watch league, I'm in the process of getting $12 into my PayPal from the PineCone surveys I respond to; would've been a few bucks more but for the old OS I'm running on this castoff computer, which a few surveys were incompatible with. I'll pledge it to the DJ whom I most abused on the comments lately, Pseu Braun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 4:51pm Webhamster Henry:

...which fails, for but one thing, to mention how funny Hearty is...
  Wed. 3/6/19 5:10pm Listener Robert:

I know I've told it before, but it was late 1980 or early 1981 when Alan Hyams said if I wanted to hear this punk stuff I'd just read about, listen to Frank O'Toole and Pat Duncan (and Morbid) -- as well as to a couple shows on WFDU and maybe WSOU, but I didn't stick with them. Soon my listening spread to Jim Price, then Bill Kelly and Irwin.

But then I moved a short distance downhill in the Bronx into a shadow zone where I had to go to my car (when I had one) or at least outside to hear WFMU. Then came the pirates on 91.1, and limited my WFMU listening even further. But then I found open WiFis I could get the stream on.

My WFMU listening kept increasing, such that when I moved here in WMFU territory (mono) with Steve Mason, who I then found out had been a listener since the 1970s and donated more than me, he said I was into the station WAY more than he was.

I also found out in recent years that my Cousin Allan was a listener and especially appreciated that many DJs here promoted new and local acts.

Also in 2 degrees of separation from WFMU, I got to know Dave Mandl via the Libertarian Book Club's Anarchist Forums, and became a friend via pagan circles of Will de Vito, who since then has been an actor in one of Bill Z. Bub's movies. After the marathon I should remember to send Micah a link to a video of Will singing a Balder version of a Christian song. Will can really sing.

  Wed. 3/6/19 5:23pm kevlicki:

I grew up in the broadcast range of 90.1fm in the Hudson valley. As a teenager hanging out with other skateboarders in the 90’s, there was an odd fellow in our group that would sit in his car and listen to these odd fictional stories by a guy named Joe Frank. This friend would become my punk rock mentor exposing me to the punk shows on Thursday nights, who Ken Freedman will remember the host. I’ve continued listening ever since! moving to the 91.1FM range in my 20’s & 30’s and being able to travel worldwide with the WFMU app. As a young and now aging punk, I’ve enjoyed the independent freeform minded programming ever since being exposed to WFMU.

Irwin, who would’ve been airing joe frank back then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 3/6/19 5:24pm Irwin:

Joe Frank was a regular weekly feature in his own time slot for many years.
  Wed. 3/6/19 5:25pm Mandy:

Back in the lab where I was doing my doctoral work in the '80s, I'd put on WFMU until the lab head yelled, "Turn that shit off!" A labmate called it "Your Station for Screeching Cats". Then there came out Kaz's front page cartoon in the NY Press featuring a screeching cat at the top of WFMU's tower, to confirm it. Loved showing that one to my labmate.

- but fuv were the big pigs. already powerfully transmitting their tame blandness to much bigger area than fmu was.

for me this station helps fill the void left by the demise of our beloved KRAB-fm, founded by Lorenzo Milam

My high school girlfriend introduced me to WFMU around 1999. I then fell in love with Alan Watts and all the great, crazy music and sounds I heard on the station. Been listening ever since. Never would have imagined I'd one day be a part of the greatest station there is!

In 2007 I was working on a construction site in Newark, NJ (new school) and I befriended the lead surveyor who was probably in his late thirties at the time. I asked a bunch of radio stations whether he listened to (q1043, 92.3, etc. and he kept saying no no no no). He told me he only listens to one station and doesn’t tolerate commercials and typical BS that comes along with syndicated programming - WOOFMOO—been hooked ever since!

Parq, I hope you lead them on saying, "Yes, the Sunday afternoon Irish show with BILL KELLY."

I was rolling the little tuning wheel on my walkman back and forth late one night in 1993 when I was 12. Church of the Subgenius was on and I'd never heard anything like it before, having been raised mostly on CBS-FM and Mix 105. It took me a few days to find the station again, and Pat Duncan was on. I finally figured out the frequency and wrote it down. My few friends at the time were just as weird as I was so they got as heavily into it as I did.

i discovered fmu when the usual stations a teenager in the 70s listened to started to be unbearably boring (if not annoying, with their slogans and ads for the us army. wnew.)
and found balinese gamelan music at the left end of the dial.

I think it was the mailorder catalogs in the late 80s or so that first attracted my attention to WFMU

I remember as an 80s teen growing up on the Jersey shore reading an article (perhaps in The Aquarian, but I cannot say for sure) about "The Greatest Station in NY is actually in NJ". I wanted to listen to that station, but alas, reception was spotty at best, so I made due with WHTG and sometimes WRSU (the Rutgers Station). And so, I knew about a station but never really lived in a place where I could get reliable reception. I'd listen driving up the Parkway to visit my girlfriend sometimes, but that was it. Even when I started grad school in New Brunswick, reception was difficult. I do remember a Bronwyn C show where she talked about 17th century English radicals, a topic I was very much interested in, but again, my listening in the early 90s was irregular. Until I found myself moving to Bloomfield in 1998. Where reception was crystal clear. And I was working from home much of the time, and so I listened. A lot. The shows I remember from those days include Chris T, Glen Jones, Hova, but really I listened to lots of the programming. And I became a supporter soon after. Fortunately, when I moved from Bloomfield down to Arkansas, the internet meant I would never be out of broadcast range again. I do miss the donor map.
