There used to be a town fairly near me, which was on a sandy spit which was eventually consumed by the sea. It was a WWI era scandal. Investors lost everything. One stalwart investor, business owner and resident went mad as everything he owned slowly slid into the sea.
It's an Oregon Coast legend. I think you can find a few online things about it. It was called Bayocean.
