I'm usually half-asleep if I try to listen to your show, but this time, I'm half-awake, so we'll see what happens.

Last week I was having trouble sleeping at this time, so I turned to show on to see if it would put me to sleep, cuz sometimes good music does that, but last week it kept me awake instead, because sometimes that happens, too. I had to turn it off, because it was too good.

This is already feeling like a stay-awake show.

Great set so far. The Farrakhan had me wondering (1) if he was still alive, and (2) why he hasn’t received any attention lately, at least in my own consciousness. A quick trip to Wikipedia provided the answers. (1) Yes, in his late 80s. (2) The official story is health issues, but I suspect his conversion to Scientology and support of Tr*mp play a big part.

Farrakhan hasn't received as much attention because he's been accused of antisemitism and people stopped taking him as seriously. It's hard to know if he really is antisemitic or not. I don't know much about him, just remember reading about that.

Well, he got tons of attention for the seemingly anti-semitism back in the 80s. Negative press still counts. And the president he apparently supports makes his own fair share of seemingly anti-Semitic comments on a regular basis and we unfortunately still hear from *him.* (To clarify, I was just trying to make an observation, not take a side on him. He’s a significant part of our collective history no matter how I personally feel about him.)

I remember a good zinger Farrakhan got in back in the early 90s, during the Marion Barry scandal. For those who don't know, Barry was the mayor of DC who, during a sting operation, was caught on film smoking crack with a hooker in a hotel room. I was listening to a news report on reactions from the black community (Barry was black), and they played a bit from a Farrakhan speech. I'm paraphrasing, but he said "A longtime member of my congregation, a devout woman, asked me 'Minister Farrakhan, you're a devout man, you've been happily married for 30 years. What do you think of an elected official who uses illegal drugs and runs around with prostitutes while holding public office?' I said who you talking about, Jack Kennedy?"

I also learned Minister Farrakhan has a Twitter account, although he hasn’t tweeted in a year, and the wording of some of the tweets suggests someone else wrote them.

All is forgiven, @PT. We all slip. But my thoughts exactly Re why Tr*mp for Farrakhan. I chalk it up to the same attraction that Kanye and Roseanne both feel for the guy. Maybe it’s got something to do with their all being fellow longtime celebrities with larger than life personas who are in part famous for making outrageous statements. Maybe they can … relate to him on that level?

George Floyd is already responsible for so much change, and who knows what the future holds if the good guys keep the momentum going to November and beyond. Seeing the completely spontaneous uprising all over the country and the world is like watching a lion suddenly realizing its own might. It's been ages since I've felt any sort of pride in my country but these last couple of weeks have changed that.
