what's the bird situation in the yard today, Handy? so far today I've seen a lone bufflehead, a crapload of mallards (I think that's the correct term), female downy woodpecker, a couple white throated sparrows, a pair of cardinals, a titmouse, a junco, and a chickadee. Several squirrels have spent so much time in the bird seed we are now referring to them as birds.

we had a big starling problem in our prior house. There was one that would pry the louvers off the bathroom vent and make a nest in the ductwork. invariably a stick or two would jam the fan and we'd be stuck until the babies took flight. One day I climbed in the shower and heard some rustling and little tiny bird mites started raining down on me. 1 outta 10, would not recommend.

Michael - normally you would take the tax relief in the return of the country where the not-for-profit was based. So if I had US income, I would make the claim in my US return. In your example, if the US taxpayer paid tax on the Canadian income declared in the return, then a deduction would be allowable on the contribution to the Canadian organisation. Pretty generous, if you ask me as under the double tax agreement, the tax paid in the US on the Canadian income would be offset against tax paid in Canada. However, I suppose that tax offset would be less due to the deduction. Nevertheless, as far as I see, it would be the US missing out on collecting the tax on the donation to a Canadian charity.

Funny you should say that Mary, as I've considered doing the very same in the UK, setting up a charity with the object to support Auricle Communications so that WFMU could benefit from the tax paid on donations by British listeners. The system works differently here as it is the charity itself which makes the claim rather than the taxpayer receiving relief. I thought also we could ship the swag en masse to save shipping costs but it's likey to attract import tarrifs, as opposed to the individual parcels which come in under the value thresholds.
