Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hi Bronwyn! My ex was in A Little Night Music a few years ago. Lots of fun!

Good evening. This is groovy.

Hi Bronwyn, WH, and all you out there.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:06pm doctorjazz:

And hi LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Hi Bronwyn and acid gang!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Webhamster Henry:

I miss Raul Julia. I saw this show, thought it was awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: I thought this show could use some hits once in a while lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Lizzie :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Why awful? I am interested in ur nine opinions!! Frank Rich hated it too
Avatar 🎭 7:23pm Listener Gregory:

Pet Clark is rolling in her grave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

And also Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, from whom this song was ripped off (well, they're alive, but still)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Webhamster Henry:

It was kind of unnecessary, padded and I was pretty offended at the Germans at the spa number. Sheesh!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Webhamster Henry:

I think Skid Row is a fine opening number - it established the parodic nature of the show!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm diciassette:

Bonjour tout le monde !
Avatar 🎭 7:30pm Listener Gregory:

Parody is fair game (Downtown)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Bonjour diciassette!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Skid Row is actually a parody of the Crystals' Uptown, a song I was unaware of until I saw the Carole King musical
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:32pm doctorjazz:

No complaints, Bronwyn, enjoying the set! (Just so different from the obscurities and flops we often hear-which I also enjoy, btw)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm doctorjazz:

If you know that Crystals song, it jumps out.
Avatar 🎭 7:38pm Listener Gregory:

And was Uptown a response to Downtown?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Webhamster Henry:

Lotsa Sondheim tonight!
Avatar 🎭 7:38pm Listener Gregory:

The wit of Cole Porter is still striking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Bronwyn Bishop:

His lyrics make me want to throw out all my lyrics (so do most of these lyricists actually)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm diciassette:

I 🖤 Cole Porter
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm WR:

hello Bronwyn and gang. I have been listening since the beginning but cooking. Food on the table and chewing and listening.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm diciassette:

Say! What's cooking WR?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm doctorjazz:

Four Jews... Great tune!
Avatar 🎭 7:46pm Listener Gregory:

Interesting fact about Kiss Me Kate, BB.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Webhamster Henry:

This is slightly different from the In Trousers version.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm doctorjazz:

Hysterical!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm WR:

basic iron + meal:, liver & onions, squash soup with broccoli & carrots, garlic mashed potatoes. sliced tomato
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey WR!! That sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love that song so much I wish it was 8 Jews in a room so it could be twice as long
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm diciassette:

Sounds delish!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm doctorjazz:

Coming over, WR, I'll bring wine.

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm doctorjazz:

Could be beer...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:53pm WR:

I gave blood yesterday, partner was told hemoglobin too low, so today's menu.
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm Listener Gregory:

I wonder if one could make a jukebox musical out of Elvis’s movie musicals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Bronwyn Bishop:

That sounds fun!! Would probably be better than the actual Elvis jukebox musical, All Shook Up
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm diciassette:

All this talk of hemoglobin is making he hungry for a Little Joe's special
Avatar 🎭 7:58pm Listener Gregory:

Also would like to confess that in 7th grade, my school made a trip to Manhattan to see 1776, and it made an incredible impression on me. It was Hamilton before Hamilton.
Avatar 🎭 7:59pm Listener Gregory:

And that line about most people embracing the possibility of becoming rich applies just as well in 2021.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Bronwyn Bishop:

So many lines from 1776 still resonate today! It also weirdly predicted the drama of the 2020 election, with a lot of the same states playing the same roles, and the whole thing hinging on Georgia flipping at the last minute!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm northguineahills:

Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm northguineahills:

very prescient, Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey ngh :D
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

You don't hear anyone playing the sweet potato any more? Why not? It has such a great playful sound.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Webhamster Henry:

How you know America is in trouble: No Service Comedies related to the Global War On Terror or any of those other never ending wars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm northguineahills:

It's only been 20 years, give it time. it's still recent history (by a historian's perspective).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm diciassette:

It's like, after Vietnam, they just ran out of steam!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

1776 made an incredible impression on everybody I know and somehow I never have seen it. I have no excuse.
Avatar 🎭 8:13pm Listener Gregory:

@SC Lizzie, I’m not sure the film was as well received.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

One of the comments on the YouTube video I pulled this from says "I love you forever and always 1921. I miss you forever and always 1921." Which implies that one of the oldest people in the world is listening to Al Jolson on YouTube
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Lizzie, I highly recommend the 1776 film (even though it was a flop at the time.) It's one of the best musicals ever and the performances are amazing! (But then check out the cast album for a much better-sung version of He Plays the Violin, as much as I like Blythe Danner)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Thanks for the tip! Very cool about the old person watching Al on YouTube.

When I was a kid they still showed old cartoons from the 30s and 40s and I remember lots of parodies of what I later figured out was Al Jolson.
Avatar 🎭 8:18pm Listener Gregory:

The Great Gatsby has just gone out of copyright. How many musicals can we expect from this in the next N years?
Avatar 🎭 8:19pm Listener Gregory:

Speaking of the 1920’s.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Webhamster Henry:

"I Love to Singa" with "Owl Jolson"
Avatar 8:22pm ifny:

ooOooooooo just turned on the digital dial and loving this set. Yay hokum libre!
Avatar 8:22pm ifny:

I've a mind to make breakfast in bed right this very gall-darn second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Bronwyn Bishop:

welcome ifny :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm northguineahills:

@Henry: I got that reference!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Gatsby would make an amazing musical!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I remember "I Love to Singa" because it was included as a featurette on the Happy Feet DVD, I found it strangely compelling at 12
Avatar 🎭 8:31pm Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, I'm just worried that it would make 10 musicals.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Webhamster Henry:

I Love To Singa was a big audience pleaser when it would play at the Thalia Cartoon festivals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm northguineahills:

Never saw Happy Feet. What's a DVD? 😁
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: It would be like the Wild Party wars of 2000 all over again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: Something we used to have back in 2006 ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm northguineahills:

Since I no longer have my garden of ghost peppers, I've lost my capsaicin tolerance. I got thai soup 5 stars spicy, wow, I needed this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Bronwyn Bishop:

a fellow spicy lover!! whats your favorite hot sauce?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Webhamster Henry:

From DJ MAC on Facebook:
I’m looking for help to either prove or disprove the last sentence of the following statement.
On October 15, 1900, Bert Williams and George Walker opened their new show “Sons of Ham” at The Star Theatre located at 13th Street and Broadway in New York City. Due to their great success, others recorded songs from the show. In 1901, Bert and George were offered the opportunity to record songs from the show by The Victor Talking Machine Company.
This would make these THE FIRST ORIGINAL CAST RECORDINGS from a Broadway show ever.
----
it turns out the "The Fortune Teller" operatta with Alice Nielsen beat it out at 1898
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm northguineahills:

I prefer to make my own from scratch, if I can. For generic hot sauce for most cuisines, the Jamaican Grace works. I used to have many different hot sauces for specific dishes, as well as dried chilies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

wow that's amazing!! 1898! i played something on the show once from 1894, but it wasn't a cast album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love that ngh, wish I knew how to make my own hot sauce
  8:41pm marpay:

Never expected to hear this!❤️

Chiu chow chili oil is my go to. I plan to be buried in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm northguineahills:

(in the green shirt)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm WR:

i have two go to hot sauces: El Yucateca green chili habanero and Crystal. The Crystal is not very hot and is for dishes like beans where the vinegar component is important. The other is for more bite. Similar to NGH, I generally use dry or fresh pepper products in cooking as determined by the dish rather than adding sauce to the finished dish.
Avatar 8:44pm ifny:

Strictly Dumpling has a good recipe for a Chinese chilli oil that's similar. It's easy to make at home and makes your home smell incredible. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm northguineahills:

partner was in the gray dress. My friend in the fro who won got really sick, and later spent the rest of the day in my toilet and my couch.
Avatar 8:46pm ifny:

Thank you for the welcome Bronwyn! I was busy throwing a bun in the oven. (Well, a quiche, but that's not as fun to say. Lockdown requires a fantasy life of love.)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm WR:

will check that out later NGH.

Avatar 8:48pm ifny:

@northguinea Congrats on placing second! I assume they demoted you for wearing safety glasses?

I am getting that Gene Barry's range is not quite an octave.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm diciassette:

El Yucateca XXX Mayan recipe, I like a lot
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm WR:

ifny, you chili oil comments makes me realize that we have a whole array of sauces from our Nepal, Indian, Korean and Thai take out. They always give more than needed for the one meal.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Webhamster Henry:

Any of you ever got to Hot Stuff, the spicy food + condiment store on Sullivan St about 25-30 years ago? I like the sambals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm northguineahills:

I Like the tastes of El Yucateca, but some of the ingredients of their preservative hurt me.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm doctorjazz:

We don't do much got sauce here (everyone but me has GERD-over time I lost my taste for very spicy food (or I regenerated those Dead nerve endings, one or the other).

@doctorjazz, I had GERD for maybe 15 years, and then sometime last year I realized that I hadn't swallowed a Tums in a week. It seems to have just... disappeared. Is this beyond the ability of medicine to explain??
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Webhamster Henry:

Hugh Laurie used to be pretty good on the Fry & Laure show.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm diciassette:

Avatar 🎭 8:53pm Listener Gregory:

Clint Eastwood's son is a professional jazz musician and composer, I believe. Kyle?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Webhamster Henry:

I hate it when people obviously fake playing in a movie.

Ruth Gordon, the actress, wrote a couple of volumes of memoirs and she lived in NYC and knew everybody so they have tons of anecdotes about theater in the 20s, 30s, 40s. She's great and I recommend them highly.

What were the Mandy children like? Unruly or ruly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I think they were probably pretty good kids, because my mom seemed to have a really good experience working for them and said Mandy and Kathryn were incredibly nice (Mandy has a reputation for being difficult, but seemingly only to people he's working with in a production)
