Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Webhamster Henry:

I've seen a lot of versions of Alice, but I suspect the 19th century theatrical ones were the best. That and the Andre Gregory one and the Svankmajer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Bronwyn Bishop:

The Svankmajer one is CRAZY (and great)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm diciassette:

Ahoy! I think I have seen the Svankmajer Alice pop up in Mubi or something simliar. I've never watched it, though!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Webhamster Henry:

The Alice bits in Dreamchild are also pretty out there. en.wikipedia.org...

I'm a big Lewis Carroll fan, had his complete works in High School, the collected letters, the Annotated Alice, etc. etc.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Webhamster Henry:

The book on the Andre Gregory Alice and how they put it together is pretty spectacular for theatre lovers. Also: many, many pix by Richard Avedon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I really need to read some Carroll, I never have
  7:25pm Jeff g. via app:

This is just the best show on FMU for accompanying making diner.
  7:26pm Jeff g. via app:

Or dinner.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm doctorjazz:

Hi Folks! My wife saw this version of Hello Dolly. (She's very pleased to hear it now)!
  7:27pm Jeff g. via app:

Carroll’s birthday is next week. (Not coincidentally, so is mine.)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Webhamster Henry:

@Drj I saw that production too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

So jealous, I've never seen any version of Hello Dolly live. I tried to get tickets to the Bette one but they were too expensive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Happy early birthday Jeff!! *confetti*
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Webhamster Henry:

I saw a Hello Dolly done at a local high school a few years ago when they had one of those really good theatre director. I think some of the cast have gone on to theatrical careers (and I hope they are ok).
  7:32pm Jeff g. via app:

My high school did Hello, Dolly, when I was a student there. I stage managed.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm doctorjazz:

Must have been great! (Before she dragged me to shows...)
  7:35pm Jeff g. via app:

Thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm doctorjazz:

I did get to see Dolly, the Bette Midler version, but her stand in performed that night.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm doctorjazz:

Happy early birthday, Jeff!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm doctorjazz:

Donna Murphy was Bette's stand in (she actually was fabulous)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Omg I would have loved to have seen Donna!! I love her
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Hah Via Galactica was the show that opened the Uris Theatre when it was brand new in '72 or '73. They had built a whole lotta platforms for the roller skates! The second production there was See Saw.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Webhamster Henry:

The Uris Theatre got renamed the Gershwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Bronwyn Bishop:

When I saw Wicked last January I told my friend who accompanied me "This theater used to be called the Uris" and he didn't believe me. "The WHAT?"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Hahahah!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Webhamster Henry:

That first Tintypes tune is "La Petite tonkinoise", a staple of Josephine Baker.
Avatar 🎭 8:00pm Listener Gregory:

Hello, Show People. I swear I was only 10 minutes late, but the usher made me wait until the intermission to come in.
Avatar 🎭 8:01pm Listener Gregory:

Also, I saw Ragtime in Chicago, I believe, and I felt it was overwrought, with huge productions just for the sake of spectacle. I am sorry to be a downer. Uh oh, the usher is telling me I have to leave now.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm diciassette:

Somehow I'm listening to this show, drinking a boilermaker, and WORKING at the same time!
Avatar 🎭 8:03pm Listener Gregory:

@dicassette, is there another way to work???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I must admit I love Ragtime because I love MAXIMALISM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm northguineahills:

pump up the acid!!! then jazz w/ your apendages!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey ngh!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm northguineahills:

How Now, Dow Jowes, rather prescient right now....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm northguineahills:

Am I too old to like K-pop?, b/c I'm starting to like K-pop. (grew up w/ J-pop, so, not too far of a stretch)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Webhamster Henry:

Really Rosie was a TV Special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm northguineahills:

Carole King!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Webhamster Henry:

My family once sang "Pierre" to a live Unitarian Universalist audience.
Avatar 🎭 8:13pm Listener Gregory:

Comment for 30 min ago: I knew someone who saw Hello, Dolly with each of the stars in its original run. He really enjoyed the way the different actors handled the role.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm diciassette:

ok Alabama!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Webhamster Henry:

This is a really weird take on Alabama Song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm northguineahills:

Getting rather Wielly....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Webhamster Henry:

There are a few Germanglish songs in Mahagonny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Not as weird as when me and a whole party full of drunk revelers sang it in an apartment on the lower east side that one time. That was the weirdest and yet best version
Avatar 🎭 8:20pm Listener Gregory:

Some orchestration on this Speak Low!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Webhamster Henry:

LES Xmas Caroling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love anything realllllly orchestrated
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Webhamster Henry:

Weill did his own orchestrations, but I don't think these are his.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm diciassette:

I did not know the music for Speak Low was by Weill. But now it all makes perfect sense!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm diciassette:

I want that CD that was amazing
Avatar 🎭 8:25pm Listener Gregory:

Also very hard to believe Ogden Nash of humorous verse fame wrote these lyrics (Speak Low).
Compare to Lines on the Antiquity of Fleas: “Adam Had ‘em.” Tht is the complete poem.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Webhamster Henry:

Did you run into this little short, musical fans: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm doctorjazz:

Love walked In is something I know pretty much from jazz versions, this is interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Can't wait to watch that, hope the whole gang is in it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

those of the musical theatre squad who were working at the time, I mean
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm doctorjazz:

(in fact, most show tunes I knew I heard because a jazz musician played it. Until I had a wife and daughter who were musical theatre fanatics, that is)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Webhamster Henry:

I think it's just some of the ones working in Hollywood in 1929. Jack Benny is telling some lame jokes and pausing for laughs, but to see some of those guys is pretty good.
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm Listener Gregory:

Salena Jones? Nice voice.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm diciassette:

Hank Jones introduced me to Love Walked In
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Sing it Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Bronwyn Bishop:

The Flamingos version was the first one I heard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: He makes a heroic effort with those high notes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm northguineahills:

So, I was watching a K-pop video earlier today, called, "chicken noodle soup". Lyrics were in Korean, English, Espanol, and frankly confusing (culturally confusing is the best kind of confusing). So, I naturally ordered take-out from Korean restaurant, and ordered chicken noodle soup.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm diciassette:

Never Will I Marry: now that is a song you can Neely to!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Webhamster Henry:

@ngh I throw kimchi into soup all the time.
Avatar 🎭 8:45pm Listener Gregory:

Is this (Perkins) the prequel to Psycho? It fits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I wish Psycho had songs by Frank Loesser, it would be even better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm northguineahills:

Putnam County (FL), was the county south of me where I went to HS that was even more redneck then the one I lived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm northguineahills:

I would have gotten kimchi, but it was $3 extra (but I got the house chili peppers, and hot sauces for free)>
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Webhamster Henry:

@ngh mmmm banchan mmmm I used to work on 32nd st / B'way and had Korean lunch once a week.
Avatar 🎭 8:56pm Listener Gregory:

Unusually, am eating Korean spicy squid tonight. I have to drive 35 min to a decent Korean restaurant, so this is a rare event.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm northguineahills:

I used to work om 8th and 38th, so, I lunch there often (and my partner's friends would drag me for dinner and karaoke (I terms were dinner and soju).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Bronwyn....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Webhamster Henry:

If you haven't had enough musical entertainment, Stashu's Polka contest entries aired today. I did two of them. I'm recusing myself as a quasi-staffer, though.

wfmu.org...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm diciassette:

I had a wonderful first experience with banchan after drunkenly wandering into a Korean restaurant after seeing a show at the Fillmore (West)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm northguineahills:

Voted for one of yours Henry (should I reveal that?)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm doctorjazz:

Close to curtain time, great show, thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm diciassette:

I always feel like this show isn't long enough! I suppose that's a good thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm northguineahills:

The last number was apropos for today....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Webhamster Henry:

Aww thanks!
Avatar 🎭 8:59pm Listener Gregory:

Thanks, Bronwyn, and sorry for my late entrance. I hope my understudy did ok.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks Bronwyn and WFMU theatre party!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm diciassette:

ngh, we tend to get a few penalty minutes each show, because there's no DJ coming up next. Thanks Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank you for listening darlings <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Your understudy, like most understudies, was thoroughly professional but lacked your star quality!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I'm closing with an opening number cause I'm cool like that
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm diciassette:
