I had a boss who more than enjoyed the early music I liked. In fact, he managed the West Coast itineraries of one of the world's great early music orchestras, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by Ton Koopman. Consequently, I attended a recital by Koopman at my boss's house, a performance on my boss's harpsichord.

Another boss, albeit at a record store, was open to all sorts of the weird shit we played for the customers. Once when the store was clear, we played Ian Dury's first album, the track that opens, "Assholes, bastards, fucking cunts and pricks..." at full volume. The manager raced out of the back room, exactly the response we sought.

Early music vocal recitals are often incomparably beautiful. So much good work is being done these days. I listened yesterday to a number of recent recitals, some by Contrapunctus. Really impressive.

Later, when I was working at Oxford, I walked out of the Blackwell's on Broad Street and encountered Ton Koopman, just standing there. I mentioned having heard him at my boss's house, and he informed me that he was performing that evening at the Sheldonian with London Baroque. Of course I attended.

Is tonight's theme based on an assumption that bosses in general, by virtue of being bosses, like relatively easy-going fare? Or that your boss, precisely, indeed only likes such fare?

A week or so ago my wife purchased a loaf of whole wheat sourdough at a nearby supermarket here in Berkeley. It was really good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm

That's a good question, Dean. There is probably a bit of that bias in selection tonight. I won't be playing, for instance, any wild hip-hop or collage-y stuff, or noise. But, more specifically, in the case of my boss, I believe he likes and listens to Afropop Worldwide, for instance, and has a significant collection of rock from the 1965-75-ish period

Different TJs have different everythings. Some of their product is produced for TJ, while some of it is locally/regionally acquired. For example, brewery overstock shows up in a local TJ, but not others. That's part of the company's genius.

I always got the impression that 95% of the stuff in TJ's was standardized nationwide, but maybe I was wrong! And I've rarely seen overstocks of anything there. I can see it with the wraps though. @Dean, I've never seen a single product that was ever cheaper at WF than at TJ's, unless it was a WF 365-brand item (WF's house brand), and even that's a stretch. I love TJ's for the prices. I should add that sales change the equation. WF has sales--chicken drumsticks today are $0.99/lb.--where TJ's never has a sale. On those occasions, WF is the best deal (not taking into account the externalities of the network effect).

GPT-3? Haven't read anything, and moreover I know precisely zero about it. My take on software and tech stems largely from a modicum of experience and an abundance of disappointment. You know, theory versus practice.

Among my favorite reads in library school, late '80s UCLA, were Fritz Machlup's assessments of the quantities of information produced in the USA. He had to proceed manually, i.e., by looking and seeing and measuring the amounts. At the time, digital investigation was available but not affordable. And so the query about how many cassettes it takes to capture a FUCKING HUGE amount of "information" wasn't even on the table. Later, Hal Varian at Berkeley ran some numbers. But I worry that Varian's notion of "information" differs meaningfully from Machlup's.
