Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

great interview! and great success story of growing up at a time and place where the arts, specifically music, is given space and respect in public school. NYC is special to have MSM and Julliard, but the opportunity for anyone to start in lower or middle school is so important. even if everyone is not going to be teacher or professional.

PS: I need to focus on this intensely beautiful music playing...

Dean:

Hindemith! That's fantastic. Love the Kammermusik, but also this marvelous LP of '20s theater music: https://www.discogs.com/Hindemith-Theatre-Music-In-Berlin-1920s/release/1148134

Hindemith was a violist. His string quartets are right up there with Shostakovich's.
  2:46pm
Dean:

The revived Amar Quartet (the name being that of Hindemith's ensemble with which he played viola) recently recorded all the SQs. Spectacular.

Hi Eli, if you're still here, what kind of mute are you using on this (after the harmon)?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
WR:

Judith, listening to you today is opening me up to think more optimisticly than i have been able to for years. the music and the humanity in your sharing your relationship to music and the world and the people in your life. thank you... and! the program is only half way through ; )
  3:31pm
Eli A:

Hi Dan, the way we produced this, I'm not really sure! I'd have to listen back pretty closely to distinguish between them. But I do remember using a bucket and two different cup mutes. For each segment of the piece I
stuck with one mute. [This part sounds like the bucket I had.]
  3:32pm
Judith:

I am so glad to hear that I am lifting you up, WR!

  3:34pm
Judith:

Thanks for joining us for the journey, Sem!
  3:34pm
Eli A:

Ha, I am not sure this is the bucket. But, since I see you're a trumpeter, the arsenal was: facet and Denis wick cup mutes, and a Soulo bucket. And maybe some cloth in the mute at some point
  3:35pm
Dan Clucas:

Ah! Good old bucket mute, almost forgot what it sounds like. Will have to get mine out. Great playing btw, you and everyone.
  3:36pm
Eli A:

Thanks, Dan. Definitely a pleasure to be with this crew. Some of these (the Soulo bucket and the facet cup) really only work for me in quiet acoustic situations--I've tried.

hope to be there when next you guys can actually perform together in the same room!
  3:39pm

Mutes are like any tech: fun to buy new toys and/or get on the bandwagon but ultimately sound and response are all that really matter

Dean @2:37, 6 shows! wow! sounds like would have been an incredible experience.
  3:59pm
Dean:

It certainly was, @WR! I wasn't living up here at the time. Was in LA, and I learned about the run of four night of shows reading Cadence. So I booked flights, stayed in Oakland, and made it to three of the four nights, two shows each. A few years later Leo Records issued four disks, one of each night.

Just double-checked the details of the Braxton GTM shows at Yoshi's. In fact, there were six nights, two shows each, Aug. 19-24. I'm pretty sure I attended three nights mid-run.
