Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Candy-O'67:

Remember when ZZ Top was all over MTV? MTV when it started, those were the days in the '80's. That was my entertainment many an afternoon after school and beyond!
Avatar 12:10pm Joe B:

@ken - recorded at his ranch studio, march 6 1974. he just snuck it onto his website last thursday.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Candy - wasn't there some ZZ Top promotion of winning a cruise with them on the Hudson River?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Maybe I'm confusing that with John Cougar promo of winning a pink house. "Paint the mother pink!"

  12:17pm Listener Bop Monroe:

greetings from sunny Tannersville.
strong 1st set Mr. JB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm David (in London):

If you knew how the 80s would sound and took that knowledge back to 1971, you probably wouldn't have laid any bets on ZZ Top being massive stars in that era. I always admired the way they managed to integrate the 80s sound (which could be pretty bad at times, all those Fairlight synth stabs) and yet keep on being excellent and true to themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good growl for '65.
Avatar 12:18pm Joe B:

pre-Eliminator, to me, is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz top

I used to take my college girlfriends from Rutgers New Brunswick to Washington Rock off 22 in the Watchung Mountains, then go to Texas Roadhouse.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@RRN - when you get to Tres Hombres you have to go for the vinyl. That album has the greatest gatefold in the history of gatefolds.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Joe! Bill Slayback's later song, "Move Over Henry, Here Come Steroids," wasn't as well regarded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm JG:

Afternoon Joe. Agree , the true home run champion. Was unaware of some of his other records, like all time leader in RBIs! upper echelon of HOF
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Whoa, great history on Bill Slaybeck. In the late 90s, I worked for a non-profit social service agency. They had an annual celebrity dinner fund raiser, One year Ernie Harwell was the guest speaker. He was the best!
  12:26pm Patolds:

Amen - Hank Aaron, the real all time home run champ
Avatar 12:26pm mb:

Hola Joe B. Great start.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

"Here comes Henry" is great! Starring it to play for my husband. Tim, that's cool.
Hi Joe, Spodiodi, Handy, Krys, Ken, and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm spodiodi:

bummed i missed ZZ Top!

aloha, Lizzie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Mike Sin:

Bill Slayback retired after a short career in the majors because after that single took off and went platinum, he went on the road opening for Bachman Turner Overdrive throughout the US. He then got thrown off the tour for pitching fastballs at Tim Turner's head during the BTO set.*

* I at least entertained myself making all this up.
Avatar 12:31pm HyperDose:

Man, this swings!
Avatar 12:31pm Hubig Pie:

Had a gander at that gatefold. Whole lotta cheese and corn products goin on. Can just imagine separating the seeds and stems from your dirtweed on that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mike Sin: And yet PBS gives Ken Burns a nine-part documentary instead of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Mike Sin:

@Gaylord -- I can't believe Ken Burns left all my insightful and detailed MLB stories on the cutting room floor when he assembled his comprehensive documentary! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm mariano:

Oh yeah, anyone notice that the horn blast in "Sleeping Bag" sounds like the one from Siouxsie's "Peek-a-Boo" and maybe also "Owner of a Lonely Heart"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Lizzie, spodi, Hubig!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I keep forgetting t hat Carnival Crash is from days of yore. This is so new sounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm mariano:

Hubig: I don't know why I hadn't done this already years ago, but I just singed up with PBS. For $5/month you get access to their archives, including all the Ken Burns stuff, plus "American Experience," "American Masters," and a bunch of others. One of the best deals out there.
  12:37pm morphe':

MB - do you remember (maybe still) The weekly Catholic Tablet had a list of banned entertainment .. I only remember The Godfather film (for the sex scene)(pg 27??57??? in the book) and HEE HAW..

  12:48pm morphe':

Handy - I wanted Maribel to hear it since i gave her a shout out but we missed it (sad face emoji)

Hubig Pie - read the GF even before the film came out - all us Catholic school boys knew the wedding sex scene page(27 or 57 seems right???) ... My father(Irish Catholic) beat my sister when she told him she had gone to see it. He read the Tablet...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm McGroovey:

My copy of Ecstasy Rhymes is supposed to arrive today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Candy-O'67:

@Tim, haha! I just saw your last response to me :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm mariano:

Hubig: YES! I'm so glad Coppola omitted that part, what was that even doing in there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm David (in London):

Mariano, it was one of the pre-sets on the Fairlight. Along with the breaking glass sound you also hear on many records of that era. The Art of Noise used them all in a single track. It's practically a checklist.

Yo morphester. Damn, I missed your starring slot.
Avatar 12:50pm Hubig Pie:

Only Sonny was well enough endowed to give her pleasure
  12:53pm morphe':

David van der Stoke - thought it might not make it in/on .... nothing negative inside, but wasn't sure it reached the heights of W&B positivity ... I did spread some Pixie Dust ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Handy Haversack:

"Way to go, jerk-off": that sums things up pretty neatly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Mike Sin:

I never missed a Midas board as much as I miss the one in Studio B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm paddy in matawan:

Not to be confused with the Gleaming Spires from Revenge of the Nerds soundtrack fame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Handy Haversack:

Mariano, Hubig, morph, there is a TON of cringe in that novel. It's ... not good.
Avatar 12:56pm mb:

@morphe': No. Trying to remember what other bands were in that sermon, tho. They were hair bands and need to consult with friends to recall if Stryper was one of them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Son Of Pantz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Mike W:

wasn’t Cincinnati also the home of the famous Sudsy Malone’s, both a laundromat *and* a live rock club?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Son Of Pantz:

That's correct @Mike W. Saw many great shows there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Handy Haversack:

Deep brewing history in Cincinnati. We used to brew two varieties of a Cincinnati pale, one blond and one red, and we called them Tuesday Weld and Ann-Margaret and the pair of them the Cincinnati Kid's Dilemma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm mariano:

David (@12:50): Ah, OK, was wondering if it was something like that, thanks. It's something like the the airhorn sound in Dancehall then.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Cincinnati Suds is a great band name,
  1:02pm Patolds:

Of course Hank Aaron is still number one, but I just like saying “Sadaharu Oh.”
  1:02pm Andres:

Hey Joe and all! An appropriate Uncle Junior quote might be "I've been farting into the same sofa cushion for eighteen months." Except ten months.
  1:03pm Skillet:

Idk if its right to just hate Phil Specter, I mean the man was severely mentally ill and it went unchecked throughout most, if not all, his life, due to the position of power he was in. Treating/recognizing mental illness in the 20th century was fairly rudimentary and so on... man im stoned
  1:03pm Patolds:

...especially saying “Sadaharu Oh” like Andrew Dice Clay
Avatar 1:04pm Joe B:

stop with the mentally ill excuse. dude abused his power and position, and was enabled for decades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Son Of Pantz:

Cincy also puts spaghetti and nutmeg in there chili, so they did make mistakes from time to time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Candy-O'67:

@Tim, I agree with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Mike Sin:

Ma, so sorry to hear about Adam from Thee Shams.

@Mike W -- that place was the practical club for local bands on tour! I actually played a set then 20 minutes later did my laundry for the rest of the tour. The best part of playing there -- hearing the whirring of the machines mixed in with the clapping between songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm David (in London):

Mike W, that sounds amazing. I'm straight onto the internet to get all over that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Stevel:

Where's the goat? Ken?
  1:08pm Skillet:

Joe B- I agree, but like you said, he was enabled too. Had he been doing what he did today, I feel like he would have been stopped/institutionalized before getting to the point of murdering someone. At the least they would take his guns away. Then again man, I dont know. Love your show though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm mariano:

morphe': Even though I was raised Catholic, it was pretty chill because some segments of the Church were trying to be all cool in the 70s: my grandparents took us all to see "JC Superstar," two of my aunts sang "My Sweet Lord" at mass once, including the "Hare Krishna" parts, unbelievably enough in retrospect. When we moved to the Bible-Belt part of north Louisiana starting when I was 12, though, I got tons of books by dubious "pastors" on the eeee-villes of rock-n-roll, which I have to say, made excellent record-buying guides, lots of stuff I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. Plus they gave all the music that extra bit of allure.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Candy - great minds!
Avatar 1:10pm Carmichael:

I played guitar in folk mass for several years with classmates. My 1st band, guess you could say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm David (in London):

Mariano, ha ha, yeah, they hadn't really thought that 'list of prohibited records' through, had they? "Thanks, this is really helpful!"

Hey there Joe B. Show sounds great.

Exceptional show today

This Shams track has a Deeeetroit vibe to it

RIP Adam! Suds Forever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Mike Sin:

@Son Of Pantz -- never did roll through Louisville on tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bringin' it.
  1:20pm Andres:

Enjoying Thee Shams very much! Your band better be good if you want to join the "Thee" club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm mariano:

Ryan: Yeah, I know. Like I said, the Catholic portion of my upbringing was chill. It was the Bible-Belt Baptists, Pentecostals, and such that were flogging the anti-rock books. Thanks for playing though, have a participation trophy with a big "45" on it ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Son Of Pantz:

@Mike Sin I only ask because bands that played at Sudsy's would hit Louisville next. At least that's how it waas in the 90's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Candy-O'67:

Great set, Joe!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Mike East:

"Orange skinned idiot" just made me chuckle out loud.
Great show, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I was raised Catholic and actually went to Catholic school for several years. I like to joke (as an atheist) that the only thing I got out of it is a strange attraction to plaid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm David (in London):

Hubig, is he Suds Terkel?
Avatar 👻 1:28pm David Shortell:

Hang in there Joe B. - this decade sucks - as Clay would - sending pixie dust
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm mariano:

Handy: LOL! Now that your character is 9th level, it's time you learned some *real* spells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Joe McG:

So sorry to hear about Tom Stevens. I was very excited to see the Long Ryders at Monty Hall since I never saw them in their '80s heyday and they delivered. The whole band was super friendly, too. What a bummer.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Joe - did you have someone from the Long Riders on your show in 2019? My apologies if you said this, I missed your mic break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm David (in London):

Hubig, Suds Magee is very cool. Like a character from a 50s noir.
  1:31pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@JoeMcG: the LR’s sure did
@Joe B: thanks for all o’this today

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Mike Sin:

RIP Tom Stevens... that is very sad... I can't remember the exact date, but sometime in 1985, the Long Ryders played the Ritz... I had never seen them previously and only had the records... I was quite excited! It was a terrific show... I remember "I Had a Dream" being specifically intense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Mariano Ry Cooder did the soundtrack for that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Handy Haversack:

Not sure I've ever consciously heard the Long Ryders before -- really enjoying. Thanks, Joe!
  1:41pm George in WO:

Hey Hoboken Jack, thanks for holding my beer at that 2019 Long Ryders show at the hall of Monty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm mariano:

Andrew: Oh yeah, that's right! Nice acoustic slide guitar. Need to look that one up and watch again. It also featured sets of real-life brothers playing the James, Younger, and Miller gangs (the Keaches, Carradines and Quaids, respectively). And an up-and-coming Christopher Guest and his brother Nicholas make an appearance as the Ford brothers.
  1:43pm Don:

Love this band! So sad, thanks Joe for this set!
Avatar 1:43pm Joe B:

@handy - and this is just one of their three songwritiers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm David (in London):

I might have to join you in a re-watching of that one Mariano. My son and I watched The Wild Bunch recently, so that seems like a good follow on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Damn, bummer about Tom Stevens. I really enjoyed this last record of theirs.
  1:45pm Dennis Diken:

Thanks for the trib Joe, I’ll be raising a glass to Tom and The Long Ryders later tonite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm McGroovey:

I'm sorry I couldn't make the Long Ryders' Monty Hall show. I love them. I wonder what I could have been doing that was more important?
Avatar 1:47pm BNowBe OnSomeShit:

This has been one awesome show today!
Awesome tunes !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm mariano:

David: It's a date, I'll book my plane ticket.

The thing that really got me about it the most as a kid was the slow-motion gun battle with the highly graphic way the shots landed and the blood went flying.
Avatar 👻 1:50pm John L:

When I moved to Baltimore, in 1990, I dumped many of my lps. This Danny and Dusty is one of the few I kept. Still have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Andrew in Toronto:

Hi there Joe and everybody else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Cal Zone!:

Loved the Long Ryders in the 80s and caught them live in Buffalo way back when. Also the Danny and Dusty lp still holds up well, where many of the records of the 80s do not... RIP Tom Stevens
  1:59pm Andy Jody:

Thanks for the tribute to Adam. He loved ya man. Seeds, ? & the Mysterians, Chuck, or Bo if you wanna play any of his all time favs. Cheers Joe! - AJ, Suds.

The Jefferson Airplane reunion album was as awesome as post-Eliminator ZZ Top. ;-)

P.S. Loooooovin' this show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm David (in London):

Funnily enough I saw an old interview with Grace Slick recently in which she said how much they all hated that reunion album.

But David, they built that city on rock-n-roll. What are *your* accomplishments in rock-based urban planning?
Avatar 2:21pm Joe B:

thanks handy and everyone, appreciate it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy It's bright and sunny but 28 degrees with some wind. Not so great. Though Downeast magazine recently published a pic of a guy who likes to do paddle boarding all winter. Looked kind of crazy on that thing in a survival suit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Woods - it's the long haul up here now...
  2:25pm David in London:

Actually Mariano, God gave rock and roll to me, so I feel fully justified in sitting in judgement on their construction methods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Woods, I know some gearheads who go out all winter here. It's, uh, not for Handy Haversack. I might do it if (when) we get a 50ish winter's day.
