Sure - the Moon's in Cancer. Let's get tidal.
Avatar 7:07pm βrian:

Ice shanties. on the other hand, are on the wane.
  7:07pm dano59:

Play The Wreck of the F. Scott Fitzgerald ...
  7:08pm Meli:

Yes i'm ready for an hour of sea shanties
  7:08pm Meli:

You know how I feel about those tunes!
Avatar 7:09pm βrian:

Seems like the auto-tunas are taking their revenge, though.
Avatar 7:09pm Tom Miller:

Heave ho lads!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

As long as it's not the Old Codger's poutin' shanty, I'm in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@dano59 - I think you mean The Wreck of the Ella Fitzgerald.
Avatar 7:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

1 part beer, 1 part lemonade, 1 part Atlantic Ocean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm melinda:

we'll plow the briney ocean
  7:10pm dano59:

Christopher Guest recorded one ... ask Ron Fields.
Avatar 7:10pm Dan Bodah:

God damn them all!
Avatar 7:11pm Dan Bodah:

(Especially the Antelope's Capt. Syd Barrett)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Son Of Pantz:

What do we do with a drunken DJ?!
Avatar 7:11pm βrian:

Oh hell, I was just thinking of this Rogers' tune!

I drove friends crazy with this.
Avatar 7:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We know Canada's Stan Rogers up New Hampshuh...
Avatar 7:12pm βrian:

Scuppers, yo.
  7:12pm dano59:

Haha Dan - Stan Rogers! A lot like U. Utah Phillips in temperament
Avatar 7:13pm βrian:

It turns out American Gold was just a hair color.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Richard S:

I was introduced to Stan Rogers in grad school some three decades ago. I can still sing this....
Avatar 7:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kinda aural beer innit.
  7:15pm dano59:

I gotta brush up on my Robert W. Service - the verse will all sound like shanties in my head.
Avatar 7:15pm ranjit:

oh so it's shanty fry tonight, i see!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm maestroso:

Alaw! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'we sang that melody - like all tough sailors do when far away @ sea'...
- Bob
Avatar 7:17pm βrian:

There's little shanti in these shanties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm melinda:

I went on a sea shanty bender on Youtube a few months ago and discovered videos of a Monday night sea shanty pub sing in the Twin Cities, looked like such fun.
  7:18pm yippie:

do you have a shanty about moby dick?
Avatar 7:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It'll be weird if I end up not knowing any of them
  7:22pm Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Oh crap I’m older than 30 I missed the whole sea shanty thing. I gotta use the Google now & catch up!
Avatar 7:24pm mb:

Hola Dan. Friars. Great show so far...
Avatar 7:25pm Dan Bodah:

@Jeff, check the Nathan Evans tiktok video of the Wellerman.
Avatar 7:26pm Dan Bodah:

@Meli, right?! You'll have to let me know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm ultradamno:

I'm guessing Friggin' In The Riggin/Good Ship Venus is unairable. Mekons have a nice shanty called Shanty.
  7:27pm Meli:

I mostly know the EL Lloyd album
Avatar 7:27pm Fredericks:

I've been digging this stuff, lately. Never heard the Florida song though. I like it.
Avatar 7:28pm Fredericks:

Forgot to hit send earlier.
Avatar 7:29pm Dan Bodah:

@ultradamno, yep -- The Good Ship Venus is possibly the filthiest song I have ever heard in my life -- GG Allin caliber.
Avatar 7:30pm Dan Bodah:

Loudon Wainwright III has a very sweetly sung version on Rogue's Gallery though -- www.youtube.com...
  7:30pm Meli:

HA! not this one though! lol
  7:30pm yippie:

i could also go for 1 about the native Hawaiians eating captain cook
Avatar 7:31pm βrian:

Actually, maybe it's that lake shanties more evoke shanti than do sea shanties.

Also, peppermint schnapps rather than rum.
Avatar 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Might just be a Trend I can't find anything in to object to... Likely not 'newsworthy' long anyroad...
Avatar 7:34pm Fredericks:

I hear more Bluegrass style harmonies on the Poxy Boggards than the other songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm melinda:

I like the Wainwright version of the filthy song
  7:35pm Meli:

I like those Scallywags!
  7:36pm Davefrom Brooklyn:

Thanks Dan,in a Sea O' Trouble, you, and WFMU are a liferaft of sound!
  7:37pm Meli:

the album I grew up with was callled Blow Boys Blow, AL Lloyd and someone else. Some songs definitely not radio edits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Richard S:

This is all great sing-along stuff. Easy rhythm, easy rhymes.... That's why they WORK as shanties!
Avatar 7:37pm Fredericks:

Does Bad Religion sing sea shanties? Their harmonies seem similar.
  7:38pm ?:

This guitar lick reminding of bin Jovi cowboy
  7:39pm Meli:

it's reminding me of PJ Harvey dress!
  7:39pm pgalub:

I've seen a million faces, and I've sea-shantied them all! (Hi Dan!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm joe mulligan:

what a show Dan! inspiring to get my family clan aran sweater but for tonight wearing a double cuff cap will do
Avatar 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One theory (hypothesis?) is the origin of Music with Humans is in collective Work synchronization. Another about the origins of the term 'Rock' as applied to Music in the USA is same relating to loading Mississippi River boats...
  7:42pm Meli:

there's definitely those call and response songs that are there to keep everyone in synch hoiseting sails and stuff
  7:43pm Meli:

LOL I was like I know this!! I played Bllack Flag for the shanties really
Avatar 7:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Maybe a crucial thing in our evolution - but then I think Music is even far more primordial. I mean - birds *dance* fergawdsake. Probly Music long before speech... & the Mystic in me says Music is just of the nature of vibrations in the Universe in the 1st place...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Son Of Pantz:

Hello Sailor

the movie Blow the Man Down is pretty good - it's like Fargo but takes place in Maine. also a true story
Avatar 7:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good to be reminded ferinstance Rawk come from Blooz comes from Slave Worksong... however far it extends...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm melinda:

@Meli I grew up with a National Geographic album called Songs And Sounds Of The Sea, which included Blow, Boys, Blow. One of my favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm melinda:

Fisherman's Friends makes me think of those hyper-mentholated lozenges
  7:51pm Meli:

nice! I found the other name Ewan McColl https://youtu.be/X_pDvLv-R2c
Avatar 7:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like all Folk Music - you hear the borrowings & adaptations & variations all down the lines of influence...
  7:51pm Meli:

OOH that's a great ONE!!! very sad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Richard S:

Great show, Dan! Thanks for putting this all together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Scott Williams:

loving all these shanties, Dan! Ewan & Peggy (w/ Charles Parker) did a great radio episode "Singing the Fishing" youtu.be...
  7:54pm Meli:

I guess not as sad as the version I know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Iºkºe:

I only caught the end of that last track. Was that about the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the most boring place on the Eastern Seaboard? A hundred years there would be like an eternity.
  7:55pm Listener Terry:

National Lampoon called this 50 https://youtu.be/vF6LFXmZJqs years ago
Avatar 7:56pm Dan Bodah:

Yeah, that's the cleaner version of Fire Down Below...less speculation about the parson's daughter
  7:56pm The Butterman:

I JUST today played “the mermaid” by Paul Clayton for one of my classes today cuz some student was into drawing mermaids! Crazy!
  7:57pm bLeubomberune:

“I have three brothers and they are at rest. Their arms are crossed upon their breast. But a poor simple sailor jest like me. Must be tossed and driven in the cold black Sea farewell to Nova Scotia you sea bound coast.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm melinda:

Thanks for the shanties Dan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rob W:

A really special show, thanks Dan!
Avatar 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Liverpool already relevant to one type of Music going back to @ least the 19th Century anyway...
  7:59pm Meli:

@melinda I'll have to look that album up!
  7:59pm Meli:

So glad I caught this episode!
  7:59pm bLeubomberune:

Au revoir DB# 1. Super music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm chresti:

Yes, thank you very much, Dan and crew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm maestroso:

Great show!
Avatar 8:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loved it DJ DB Thx !
Avatar 8:01pm Dan Bodah:

Thanks everyone! This was a blast!
Avatar 2:58pm Mitten John:

Stan Rogers: What a talent! Wrote convincing songs from point of view of sailor, rancher, oil field worker, farm wife, man in old folk’s home…
Saw him twice at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. I sat stage right observing the sweat drip off the tip of his nose and Garnet pounding down Stroh’s. He sang until he started to get hoarse, then announce he’d finish with two more songs.
33 years old. Shit.
Avatar 3:00pm Mitten John:

Barrett’s Privateers: An excellent documentary on Stan called “One Warm Line” was shown on CBC a long time ago. Here is a link to the portion of it in which Stan tells how he came to write the song, then he and the boys give a rollicking rendition of it sitting around a table pounding their feet. youtu.be...
Also, a parody of the song based on a tasting of Garnet Rogers’ home brew: youtu.be...
