For one thing - CDs were Mastered terribly in the beginning - so there's a Before & After when talking about CD sound perhaps?
Point being made here: There's Sound & there's Convenience of format... The convenience of Digital is obvious. If convenience seems a bad word - try versatility...
The history of formats was kind of Expansion - expanding the sound & the equipment - & then when the Digital world came down - it reversed & became about Compression: how much can we take out for storage & transmission (online) & hope no one notices too much...
Analog means one thing is Analogous to another : a Sound Wave & record grooves or tape magnetism... With Digital - it's a question of how often you take a slice of that nice round sound wave - Sampling Rates... With Analog - all the Mechanical aspects are a detriment: damage every time you use it, preservation - getting records or tapes (tapes!) to go smoothly @ the right speed always...
CDs are Optical-Digital. So - some interesting Mechanics still... I think they gt a little ahead of themselves with Design for the sake of selling us all back our own Culture once again... & put the Market ahead of the Audio... So ever since it's been - how do we put back what we took out into them?...

Jeffrey, I see that the Band's Stage Fright is being reissued with numerous unnecessary 'bonus tracks'. The interesting extra is a concert from the Albert Hall in '71. I remember being there, high point was Garth Hudson playing Chest Fever on the Albert Hall organ.
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
On the other hand - a record groove or tape magnetism are Analogous to a Sound Wave: no Sampling sections sliced out of the Sound Wave to turn into numbers... It's a matter for Science to tell us how they actually compare for Reproduction...
