@Handy: The borders of The Gambia were determined by the British and the French (Gambia and Senegal) by treaty by as far as the British navy were able to fire a cannon from the Gambia River.

I want -7F (actually, the coldest in NYC I experienced was -8, in WV, was -26)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
David (in London):

It's a fine British tradition which I for one keep alive ngh. All my geographic and travel decisions are based around how far I can fire my cannon.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Handy Haversack:

We were hoping to get out of town next week when Kate has a break from teaching. But it's snowing every other day, and in the end we decided the driving was going to be too treacherous. It's a small disappointment in the wider context, but it sure feels frustrating. Any other winter, I would have been happy to see all this snow. But this time around, it just starts to seem personal. Who's a guy gotta propitiate around heeyuh?!

ngh, yeah! I'm a sucker for an origin story.

Hello, David, and all aboard.

YETI BOB:

I know nothing of Kuwaiti music but according to WP:, "Kuwait is the birthplace of various popular musical genres, such as sawt. Traditional Kuwaiti music is a reflection of the country's seafaring heritage, which is known for genres such as fijiri. Kuwait pioneered contemporary Khaliji music. Kuwaitis were the first commercial recording artists in the Gulf region. The first known Kuwaiti recordings were made between 1912 and 1915."

I'll stick with Uruguay.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm

I picture your and David's random scripts sort of double-helixing around each other in the realm of pure geographic probability, Yeti. Whereas I'm just a doggedly flat curve waiting to be intersected.

Avatar 🚂 1:00pm
YETI BOB:

@Handy - you inspired me to do some probability calculations. Since the pool of remaining countries shrinks every time we play, the odds of choosing correctly from the remaining ones goes up. On the last week, if we're all still here in 4 years, we're *guaranteed* to guess correctly

Avatar 🚂 1:03pm
YETI BOB:

so over the course of 249 shows (length of ISO-3166 list) the expected number of correct guesses per player is ∑(1/n) 1≤n≤249 which comes out to 6.09. So we can expect to be right 6 times if we play long enough.

"The song of the dogs" ?

Also, waiting for Wallis & Fatuna to get their turn...
Avatar 🚂 1:07pm

@Bas: You'd have to deliberately choose countries that had already been chosen, which would be silly, since there's a list here: www.wfmu.org...

I hand to look up if Bancs Publics by Georges Brassens had been played on wfmu before and ...nope!

I feel like by the fourth time the Gambia comes up, I'm going to start feeling like I'm cheating.
Avatar 🚂 1:08pm

That would be like Handy sticking with Gambia after the inevitable day that we go there. After the horizontal line is intersected, time to pick a new horizonatal line, or else that's just obstinacy

Avatar 🚂 1:23pm
YETI BOB:

@ngh: At each step you are picking from a set of N, so the probability is just 1/N, where N starts at 249 and goes down to 1 for the last round. You could write 249≥n≥1 but it's more customary to write the limits in the other direction.
