Does anyone know the gypsy jazz guitarist Rodolphe Rafalli? We caught several sets of his trio at Le Piano-Vache in Paris a few years back after I managed to navigate back by dead reckoning to the bar we'd loved the most on our first trip there sixteen years before. It happened to be a Monday, and we stayed for hours so we could see all three sets and then went back the next week with friends so they could see it, too. Good, good stuff.

Stanley, do you know Alasdair Gray, /Lanark: A Life in Four Books/? I'm ordering a copy today.
David (in London):
My Austrian favourite is Linz. It's a lovely little town, and you would think that if you had [a] a wine festival [b] a river festival and [c] an electronic arts festival, you might perhaps space them out over the course of the summer? Or...you could have them all on the same weekend! Someone at the Stube joked me to that nothing happens there all year, but for three days it then becomes the most happening place in Europe.
