Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from February 19, 2021 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I'm here, but I have a request: Please play some music to wash dishes to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Quincy Jones is peering at you from that album cover like "Wash dishes to me Gregory"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hi Bronwyn and Theatre Goers!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Webhamster Henry:

Someone on WFMU needs to do a big Quincy Jones tribute show - don't wait until he dies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Henry!!
Avatar 🎭 7:20pm
Listener Gregory:

Your explanation of the Hi-Los was quite interesting. There are some standards that singers often do the verse of, like "Tea for Two" or "I've Got a Crush On You." I think the Gershwin verses are particularly popular.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
WR:

Henry, it appears you are correct, no birthday celebration or feature on Quincy Jones find I in the playlists.

Hi Bronwyn.

LG are those dishes all clean yet?
Avatar 🎭 7:21pm
Listener Gregory:

Dishwashing done. The music was fine until the accordion hit. I won't wash to accordion accompaniment. There are limits, people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

cole porter CASUALLY throwing out "life was so grey, i wanted to END IT" wtf
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Webhamster Henry:

There's a good Hey There scene in Grace Of My Heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I used to play the accordion when I was 13. I wasn't very good at it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I interviewed the director of that movie once! Still haven't seen it though
Avatar 🎭 7:26pm
Listener Gregory:

The accordion can be very good, but the smarmy Italian version is not my favorite. There are some wonderful contemporary accordionists.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Webhamster Henry:

I used to have that Best Of Barry Manilow 2 record set for dishwashing purposes.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
Webhamster Henry:

@BB It's so much fun! Pastichey music by authentic composers, thinly disguised music personalities!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

Ah time for the weekly Harold Rome!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Webhamster Henry:

Pins & Needles was a huge unexpected hit - I wonder how the actual arrangements sounded.
  7:29pm
Gerry from Miami:

First timer here, Bronwyn. Hearing this Rosemary Clooney classic takes me back to my youth. This is part of my "mom's music." She would go about her daily household chores singing along with these evergreens on the radio. I actually enjoy this era of American pop. But in my teen years, along came Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Sfones, Bob Dylan etc. Still like hearing the old tunes. Good music is timeless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Do I really play Harold Rome weekly? He didn't place very highly when I tallied up everyone I'd played lol
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Webhamster Henry:

Wishful thinking. Really, he has excellent lyrics and music.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
WR:

welcome Gerry.
Avatar 🎭 7:35pm
Listener Gregory:

Tony Bennett does a very nice version of "I Got Lost in (Your?) Arms" in one of his 90s albums, I think.
  7:35pm
Gerry from Miami:

Never was a huge fan of Ms. Quatro. But you gotta give it to her---she sure had versatility!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
WR:

in my opinion the show is more torchy than trashy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Welcome Gerry!! Glad you're enjoying the show :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: true, he's great, I should play him more often lol
Avatar 🎭 7:38pm
Listener Gregory:

Bennett update: The Art of Excellence, 1986. Cover shows him framed by the World Trade towers. Sad to see now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: I just called it "Really Great Trash" because I was reading Sondheim's book of lyrics and saw that phrase in a song from Merrily We Roll Along and it spoke to me lol
  7:39pm
Gerry from Miami:

Dr. Frank N. Furter goes legit! Rocky Horror, this is not! And you can't detect a trace of his British accent in this song.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
WR:

did not know that Suzi Quatro did anything like show tunes much less being in a show.

love Tim Curry, but curious to hear him play it a less campy.
Avatar 🎭 7:40pm
Listener Gregory:

Speaking of accents, Cumming's Scottish-German one is very special.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
doctorjazz:

Hello, Bronwyn and Jazzers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

@WR: I played his version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" on my former WFMU show once. He does "Anyone Who Had a Heart" like it's "Losing My Mind" and "Losing My Mind" like it's "Anyone Who Had a Heart"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

hey doctorjazz :D
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

that i cannot go to a bar does not preclude me from dining like i am in one: cornichons, cheddar, saltines and ale. and no dishes. maybe i am trashy.
Avatar 🎭 7:44pm

Is the playlist right?? This lovely piano is "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught"?
Avatar 🎭 7:44pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, do you know who the pianist is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm

@WR: I had to google cornichons. They look great, I <3 pickles

You'd think Björn could afford a 4-track.
  7:56pm
Gerry from Miami:

It says "demo" on that song from "Chess." Sounds more like "bootleg." Bad pressing?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
WR:

sounded like cheap cassette recorder demo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

See, I told you guys every musical in 1979 got a disco cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Doug: Hi!! Thanks for listening :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

and hi diciassette!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

The Chess demo is definitely a demo, it's an early version of a different song from the show
Avatar 🎭 8:02pm
Listener Gregory:

This is not the worst disco cover by any means, though I've never heard the original, which probably helps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

The original was performed by Madeline Kahn in On the Twentieth Century. Kristin Chenoweth also does a great version in the revival

I didn't know Cher sang this. Let's just say I have a deep personal connection to the original production :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

what is your deep personal connection?? are you sherman edwards?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Webhamster Henry:

An Yma flavored Magic Flute would have been fun!
Avatar 8:12pm

Lol no
Avatar 🎭 8:13pm

The Magic Flute is definitely musical theater.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm

There ya go with the Na Szkle Malowanie
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Webhamster Henry:

This time in the original Polish instead of the Croatian one you played a few months ago.
Avatar 8:15pm
Roberto:

Tricky Dick's staff attempted to censor that particular song from the White House production in 1970.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's the Hunchback or Cyrano of the week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Roberto: Yes they did, and they successfully censored Cool Considerate Men from the movie (but luckily it's in the director's cut)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I have determined after a year of this program that the five most musicalized stories of all time are Hunchback, Cyrano, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and Twelfth Night (a motley crew)
Avatar 8:24pm
Roberto:

I believe the White House attempted to censor that one too.
Avatar 🎭 8:25pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, maybe Les Mis too? Certainly there have been a lot of theatrical versions of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

i love that in german it goes from "bells bells bells bells" to "KLANG KLANG KLANG KLANG"
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

I have actually seen very few musicals in person, I realize, but that Dave Clark one would definitely get me off my couch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

It needs a revival in 2022. Because time waits for nobody
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Webhamster Henry:

You played a lotta gender swapped tunes tonight!
Avatar 🎭 8:39pm
Listener Gregory:

The musical Time ran for two years on the West End, and the star rock musician was played by Cliff Richard and then David Cassidy! Can't believe I missed that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: I looooove when people do gender swapped songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

i figured you should all know this exists so you can share in my pain
Avatar 🎭 8:44pm

I will step on a pop-top in sympathy, Bronwyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

my new hobby is looking at old newspapers online. i just saw a great nytimes headline from 1912: ANGRY HOUSEWIVES INVADE MEAT SHOPS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

fun fact: one of this song's writers is the son of THE GREAT CREATORE! that robert preston shouts about in the music man
Avatar 🎭 8:49pm
Listener Gregory:

I saw a lot of ads for that Margaritaville musical, so I'm surprised to learn it wasn't successful. It seemed to reach the lowest common denominator that jukebox musicals shoot for.
  8:55pm
Gerry from Miami:

Great program, Bronwyn! A super evening of show tunes and assorted miscellanea. I'll be back here again! LATER!
Avatar 🎭 8:56pm
Listener Gregory:

What would Kurt Weill have thought if he could have seen what happened to his song? Someone here must know.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
WR:

looking back, you already played Streisand, wondering if ony one you've not fit in.
Avatar 🎭 8:59pm
Listener Gregory:

Very fun show, Bronwyn! Take another curtain call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I bet Weill would have liked that arrangement, he wrote plenty of brassy Broadway hits. Brecht on the other hand would have been all "was the fuck ist das"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Bronwyn those old newspapers sound fantastic! Any site you recommend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

@Lizzie: I've really mostly been looking at the New York times- lots of good stuff like old reviews of 1920s musicals where they mostly talk about all the fancy socialites in attendance
