Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Looney Toons? Good evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Gregory!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm WR:

here for a while.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Webhamster Henry:

It was during the "We Lost a Ton of Money on Pinocchio and Fantasia" period of Disney.
Avatar 🎭 7:05pm Listener Gregory:

I'm not sure I've seen an animated musical since... 1965? But the Bill Evans version of Some Day My Prince Will Come (Snow White) is one of his great performances.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Webhamster Henry:

I did a review of The Tune in Cineaste magazine when it came out.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Webhamster Henry:

I was hoping you'd do the Triplets
Avatar 🎭 7:09pm Listener Gregory:

Evans also played the theme from Alice in Wonderland (I think an animated version), but it didn't catch on.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Webhamster Henry:

There are lots of really great animation soundtracks out there. We particularly like Coraline, Kirikou, and lots of old Fleisher Bros cartoons.
Avatar 🎭 7:11pm Listener Gregory:

Boy, the playlist is seriously lagging today.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Cmurtha:

Been a while, but I am here to catch the show live. Hello everyone!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Cmurtha:

Also what a bop to come in on.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm doctorjazz:

Take me home, Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Webhamster Henry:

What'e Japanese for "West Virginia"?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm WR:

driving me nuts i can't remember which anime this is from. i know I've seen it several times...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm doctorjazz:

West Hikuriko, Mountain mama
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm doctorjazz:

(Toots Hibbert waa taken to West Jamaica)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm doctorjazz:

Had kids in the 90s, they grew up on round 2 of Disney animated musically, from Little Mermaid onward
Avatar 🎭 7:24pm Listener Gregory:

Why was there a Felix the Cat musical? Can any theory of human rationality explain this?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey Bronwyn when are you doing the Villain Song show?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm WR:

gotta get back to work now. laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi everyone :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

bye WR!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm doctorjazz:

In 2014, no less, did anyone remember that cartoon by then (used to watch Felix in the 60s on TV as a kid)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Omg I should do that soon!! After the next 3 weeks which are going to be an interview and then the marathon
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:27pm doctorjazz:

Hi and bye, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Cmurtha: I was obsessed with the Brave Little Toaster as a kid and didn't find out until recently that the songs were written by VAN DYKE PARKS which is amazing
Avatar 7:28pm Jay S:

Hi from San Francisco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Felix the Cat: THe Movie actually came out in 1988- Don Oriolo just released an album of the songs in 2014 for some reason. I don't know why the movie became a thing lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Jay :D
Avatar 7:29pm Jay S:

I LOVE the songs from Brave Little Toaster! It's a great movie too.
Avatar 🎭 7:37pm Listener Gregory:

There are many totally absurd musicals/films made that make you ask, "What were they THINKING?" And then once in 5 years or so, one of them turns out to be brilliant—thus leading to 5 more years of absurd ideas being taken seriously.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Cmurtha:

The hell is this movie? When did this come out? From the mind of George Lucas
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Flop musicals and flop animated musicals are a specialty of this show!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Cmurtha:

oh, Ferngully, a movie I watched more often then I should have as a child.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Speaking of villain songs...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Cmurtha:

Toxic Love SLAPS.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm doctorjazz:

My younger daughter LOVES the RV version of Steven Universe (I'd never heard of it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Bronwyn Bishop:

does this song remind you of anything?? she asks pointedly
Avatar 🎭 7:53pm Listener Gregory:

Keep forgetting I have cheese in my pocket.
Avatar 🎭 7:57pm Listener Gregory:

Randy Newman! Didn't know about this work.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Webhamster Henry:

Charlotte's Web: every scene stolen by Paul Lynde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I loved the stop motion James & the Giant Peach as a kid! It's also the best of the roald dahls imo
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Webhamster Henry:

The Spider in James and the Giant Peach was Susan Sarandon.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Cmurtha:

oh damn, totally forgot about this song. This is a weird throw back for my brain. On the Charlot Web song
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Cmurtha:

An American Tale holds up far more than I thought it would.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Webhamster Henry:

According To Plan is a great Explication song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

and those are hard to write!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Cmurtha: An American Tail was apparently one of my favorites as a kid but I have no memories of it whatsoever...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Webhamster Henry:

Then you get yer I Want song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I think the only one of those I've played tonight is "Rocket to the Moon"
Avatar 🎭 8:10pm Listener Gregory:

The Jungle Book is the only film so far I actually saw, but in the earlier, uncorrected version—not the 2007 version.
Avatar 🎭 8:11pm Listener Gregory:

Strange to hear a pop song from 1930s as a song in a 2010 animated musical.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Cmurtha:

Sita Sings the Blues is pretty good. Its up for free everywhere because the woman who made it HATES intellectual property laws.
Avatar 🎭 8:13pm Listener Gregory:

"I've got a feeling I'm falling" was also in the musical Ain't Misbehaving, which was sadly live action with real people. Great musical, and the cast album is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Bronwyn Bishop:

whoops i fucked up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This isn't Harold Arlen obvs lol. But it's always nice to hear Judy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

harold could sing, but not quite this well
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Webhamster Henry:

John Hubley's version of Finian's Rainbow got its soundtrack recorded before it got shut down by the Blacklist. a topnotch bunch of singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. I think pirated versions of the soundtrack are kicking around ot there.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm doctorjazz:

Big sing along here (to Prince of Egypt), was a big hit here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I love Ain't Misbehavin!! I've played songs from it a few times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Cmurtha: I don't know anything about this woman but this makes me love her, whoever she is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Wow an animated Finian's Rainbow?? This is fascinating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: I somehow never saw the Prince of Egypt, but that song is a bop
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm doctorjazz:

And Sebastian!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Cmurtha:

Prince of Egypt/Road to El Dorado are both among the best Dream Works ever made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I've never seen either, somehow, despite having been born in 1994. I was a Pixar kid through and through and thought animated musicals were lame. And then I grew up and became obsessed with animated musicals and wrote a musical about Ashman & Menken
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Bronwyn Bishop:

in case anyone is wondering why i love Ashman & Menken so much, listen to Hakuna Matata (by Elton & Tim Rice), really focus on the music and lyrics, and then do the same with this song...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Cmurtha:

I recomend them both, more so Prince of Egypt as its more of a musical and its a prettier movie. Howard Ashman really loves his 10 dollar words in Disney songs.
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm Listener Gregory:

@WebhamsterH, why did the blacklist shut down Finian's Rainbow? It made it to Broadway and then to Hollywood, with Fred Astaire. That version sounds awesome though.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm doctorjazz:

We still have the Prince of Egypt in VHS (but no VHS player connected)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Webhamster Henry:

@Gregory This was in the 50s when HUAC was going after folks like Yip Harburg and John Hubley. His investors got scared away.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Webhamster Henry:

@Gregory and Disney was vicious toward anyone who was against him in the famed Disney Strike, and thought they were all communists. Hubley was at the newly formed UPA studio at the time.
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm Listener Gregory:

Just looked up John Hubley. Interesting character. His daughter is a member of Yo La Tengo, which is a favorite group of mine.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm doctorjazz:

Ah, Georgia, knew the name was familiar.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Webhamster Henry:

Yeah, Georgia is one of the kids in Hubley's WINDY DAY. I've been a longtime Hubley fan!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Webhamster Henry:

Emily Hubley animated the animated bits in "HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH", the movie, a lot in the Hubley style that her parents both animated in.
Avatar 🎭 8:42pm Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, I wonder if the album cover you're showing for Lady and the Tramp is from the non-musical original (which I saw as a child) and not the musical remake of 2019.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Cmurtha:

Great show tonight Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

That album cover is for the 2015 Legacy Collection reissue of the 1955 Disney film. The Legacy Collection series is great- so many demos!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm doctorjazz:

SnowWhite must be coming...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thanks Cmurtha :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: how ever did you guess? ;)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Here's a Cinderella cover you might not have heard:
www.echo.net...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm doctorjazz:

Rebecca, my older daughter, spent 9 months working on a Disney cruise, She's reliving it tonight (and performing along).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

aww so glad!! I would loooooove to go on a Disney Cruise (I have no interest in going on any other cruise)
Avatar 🎭 8:51pm Listener Gregory:

@BB, I see. I got confused by the Wikipedia description of the earlier film, which didn't seem to be a musical. How could Wikipedia let me down??!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Webhamster Henry:

Of course the Tom Waits Version reveals the ugly underbelly of dwarf exploitation.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I know people who hate cruises who loved the Disney ones - they're very well organized so it never feels crowded. Not millions of kids, either!

Webhamster Henry brings the room down as usual
Avatar 🎭 8:53pm Listener Gregory:

The dwarves' whistles are strangely out of rhythm with the rest of the song.
@Webhamster H, you are so right.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

We went twice when she was on the cruise (never had an interest before Beck got the job), it was fun!
Avatar 🎭 8:53pm Listener Gregory:

Lovely show, Bronwyn. Thanks a lot. Once again, I learned a lot and have added to my Netflix queue accordingly.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

Great show, Bronwyn, much fun, thanks!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Webhamster Henry:

This was lots of fun! It IS all too much!
Avatar 🎭 8:54pm Listener Gregory:

All together now!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm doctorjazz:

One of the (rare) underexposed Beatles songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thanks for tuning guys!! LONG LIVE ANIMATED MUSICALS!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey I have a musical animation! My Ex and I were inspired by the Hubleys! www.jhhl.net...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@doctorjazz: that's so true! One of my favorite Beatles songs. I love George
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Agree, doctorjazz
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Webhamster Henry:

I used to say there was more creativity in a minute of Yellow Sub than all of Saturday Morning TV. (back when that was a thing)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm WR:

thank you Bronwyn, i had the volume so low that I will be relistening to fully enjoy the show and all the comments.
