Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Handy Haversack:

Actually, it's partly through my efforts that the whole company is taking these trainings -- and this is phase 2 of 4. We will, hopefully, soon be digging into the historical privilege of our company and industry and looking for ways to dismantle it and have permanent and ongoing change.

That's why you need trainings. It's not personal prejudice (entirely). It's seeing systems of privilege and power and working on an ongoing basis to tear them the hell down.

I'm thinking a Vieux Carre ...

deeeefinitely get rid of that radon, Julie. My late MIL had some guy offer to test for her when it was becoming recognized as a health hazard. She declined, assuming it was some sort of a scam. After she was diagnosed with lung cancer, she did the test and found the levels were somewhere in the upper teens

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm

@Scott it is in the ground under the homes and creeps in if there are any cracks or gaps in the flooring or foundation. It is pretty much everywhere but certain parts of the country are worse, and homes close to each other will vary greatly.

I seem to remember we've discussed this before, but yes, yours truly is also in the "radon-levels-too-high" club. They did install so-called radon wells to the backyards plus extra ventilation systems to our houses. We're also monitoring each apartment. Wouldn't want to hear that whatever has been done so far had not helped.

Thanks Phillippe, I did a quick search. It seems not to be a high risk in Australia, so never heard about the health concerns. I thought it must've been a treatment houses were given in the days when Asbestos was still used too.

Handy Haversack:

I started reading a book about the Passaic River yesterday. It starts with What Happened to Newark. There's a bit about workers at a DDT plant that is making such incredible amounts of DDT and pumping such incredible amounts of DDT waste into the river that management sends them out at low tide with rakes to spread out the underwater mountain before boaters get caught on it and notice the *mountain of DDT* in the water.

Pondering final hour themes, I landed on songs that involve aromas, either in the titles or lyrics. Thus, "Incense and Peppermint," Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat[box]" ("incense and patchouli"), I suppose "Smells Like Teen Spirit," much as I can't bear Nirvana, and so forth. You would think a band like Renaissance would have candidate tunes. Weirdly, "Ashes Are Burning" includes almost exclusively visual imagery, with a bit of the tactile (a reference to "breath" and "fingers are holding").
