Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

Enjoyed your email. I don't always get emails from whom I consider celebrity. I knew many of the majors personally and have many stories. I remember riding with Tommy Ellison and group in 1959 to show him where the church was for The Hightower and Singing Sons program. He called me Jr. The Soul Seekers from New Jersey rehearsed in our living room. Their guitar player got killed in Viet Nam. Nick Hightower did an annual revival in Boston. Preached and Played. James Cleveland came to Boston with a 10 year old Billy Preston introduced on the piano. He had just performed in a film with Nat Cole. Clarence Fountain threatened to hit my Dad in the head if he didn't get his money before he sang, being blind he didn't know my dad was standing right there. Julius Cheeks use to drink something back stage to clear his throat. Ira Tucker and June Cheeks would jump off a 4ft stage and run up the aisle which would bring the house down. Richard Chase our photog had a crush on Mavis Staples when they came. Mavis would play with these guys. Made her very popular. Roscoe Robinson won the respect of Bill Moss when he dropped the house on, "Sending up my Timber." I have some great memories. Slim Hunt would always where a cape when he sang. Things like that always get the attention of Black Folks. If my dad wanted to pack the house he would bring the Siamese twins( Yvonne and Yvette) with the clouds and Jubes package and both sets of Blind Boys.
