Hi everybody. Thanks for tuning in. I want to acknowledge everyone who pledged to this program during the 2021 fundraising marathon who wasn’t already thanked by name. Some of you pledged after the conclusion of last week’s show, but most of the unthanked owe their anonymity to slipshod time management by yours truly. Damn. Actor George Segal died. Oddly, he played banjo on a Ray Manzarek LP. He also accompanied the Smothers Brothers on a cover of Phil Ochs' Draft Dodger Rag. Loved him in King Rat, Bye Bye Braverman, Owl And The Pussycat, among others. But an indelible childhood memory is seeing Ruth Gordon grab his bare tuchus in the film Where's Poppa? Dad, was it appropriate to take your 11 year old son to see that film?

California Split is on Amazon Prime. There is also an obscure film called Loving, with Eva Marie Saint, Sterling Hayden and David Doyle in a rare dramatic role. Try and find it. And, yes, headcleaner. I frequently tell my 95 year old father how much I appreciate our random trips to the cinema. Hard to believe how common it was to find films like those at the average Long Island suburban movie theater. Weird double features, dubbed foreign films paired up with the latest Charles Bronson flick.

Ira, have you ever played at the Horseshoe? A fave venue.

@Matt: Man, that's a wild inaugural act for the Horseshoe Tavern! Was there some odd personal connection there? I can't imagine how that came to be...

No gurldoggie, but I was thinking of how it cries out for Stone Flute-era, Herbie Mann! Hello to the Space Needle!

Wow, Joe!

Speaking of weird coincidences, I was watching that Aretha miniseries on the cable, wherein David Cross plays Jerry Wexler. I remarked to K., “I’ve interviewed Jerry Wexler,” then I thought for a second and added, “and I’ve also interviewed David Cross!” Only time that’s ever happened to me.

@Ira Well, and then there was the problem that Lake George and Bethel, NY (where the Woodstock thing was) are about 3 miles apart.

Andrea, yes, played the Horseshoe many years ago, a long and kind of amazing story. Much more recently, my producer and I dj'ed at the Sadies' annual New Year's Eve show, and joined them on stage for 2 songs. Sooooo much fun.

Ira, perhaps when Decca sent Brenda Lee to London as a publicity ploy to juice up her career, which stalled because of the British Invasion, and she cuts the fabulous "Is It True?" and a scorching version of "What'd I Say" (with Jimmy Page on guitar) while there.

George Jones's nutso rockabilly sides as Thumper Jones spring to mind as another good example of the end result transcending the crass commercialism (and, in this particular case, the artist's contempt for the material)
