Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Honestly, I didn't wait for your villain's show. I started on villainy on my own.

this was released as a single, guys. a single!

Is that Leslie Nielson on the cover of the soundtrack??

Bruce Kimmel was also responsible for THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL.

this was written by john entwistle instead of pete townshend like all 300 other songs in tommy. i wonder why??

Ahoy! It's no more Mr Nice Guy, here at Acid Jazz Hands, innit
  7:24pm
;;;:

I remember reading that Pete Townshend asked John Entwistle to write the two songs where Tommy was traumatized by relatives because doing so was too much for him and because creepy, dark songs were sort of John's specialty
Avatar 7:24pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Oh boy I'll have to check that out, whatever it is
Avatar 🎭 7:24pm
Listener Gregory:

There are deep theological questions here, seriously. If Jesus was not condemned and crucified, then original sin would not have been atoned for, and humanity would not have been saved from eternal torment. So, are the people who did that really villains? Without them, there is no Christianity. Discuss.

This is a pretty elaborate mockup!
Avatar 7:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I like this demo because it sounds like Alan Menken is cosplaying as the Silver Apples with his crazy synths here (and because Howard Ashman goes BALLS OUT as Ursula)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
doctorjazz:

The demo was really cool!
Avatar 7:53pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

they were too cool, they really were
Avatar 🎭 7:54pm
Listener Gregory:

To my mind, the most evil character in the theater is Iago. Is there no musical version of "Othello"? I guess it wouldn't be the feel-good musical of the summer...
Avatar 7:55pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

both these 3 and the villain in the wiz like to sleep till noon. apparently villains love sleeping
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm
Listener Gregory:

Richard III also very bad, and even less likely to appear in a musical, I would guess.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
diciassette:

Cheers to the Annie contingent!
Avatar 7:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: There was an Othello musical called Catch My Soul which premiered in 1968 and allegedly had Jerry Lee Lewis playing Iago at some point. I don't think there's ever been a Richard III musical
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
diciassette:

..from the Annie Contingent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

Not a musical, but the Ian McKellen Richard III is really good: www.imdb.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

Shakespeare musicals could be another theme show.
Avatar 8:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Great idea Henry!!!
Avatar 🎭 8:02pm

Benedict Cumberbatch also a great Richard III. But can he sing???
@BB, incredible that there’s a musical Othello. It is not a pleasant story, really.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm

Or just to watch NPH sing "Bigger" about 10 times.
Avatar 🎭 8:18pm
Listener Gregory:

Maybe what villains really deserve is our understanding.
Avatar 🎭 8:28pm
Listener Gregory:

I haven't heard this song (My Name) for decades, yet I know most of the words. Real villainy.
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

you remember...his name! He'd be thrilled
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

I think that role is typically given to someone who can't actually sing. Every version I've heard is like that. It makes the song more threatening.
Avatar 8:31pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That's a good point, I wouldn't feel very threatened if Mario Lanza sang it
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
WR:

hi all, just got off work call, trying to understand the plot line here.
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
WR:

was there more than one musical called Parade? or maybe I'm thinking Easter Parade. so confused here.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
diciassette:

I've been sharpening knives to the music and a little behind myself
Avatar 🎭 8:47pm
Listener Gregory:

More 1776!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
WR:

diciassette: knives? for the mob?
Avatar 8:49pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

this is probably the most disturbing song in the history of musical theatre
Avatar 8:50pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: Jerry Herman also had an Off-Broadway revue in 1960 called Parade
Avatar 🎭 8:50pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, and part of its point is that they (we) were all the villains, some just more obvious than others.
Avatar 8:51pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yep this is a villain song because Rutledge is a scary mean baritone (and because he actually approves of slavery) but they were all complicit!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
WR:

is the movie version of 1776 recommended? I see that John Cullum did the movie as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Webhamster Henry:

Johanna was cut from the original production, put on the cast album, and now often is in revivals.
Avatar 8:55pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes it's brilliant! Cullum was actually not the original performer on Broadway, that was Clifford David (a tenor who was less intense and more slimy, his version is great too.) Cullum was Rutledge #3
Avatar 8:56pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: We included it in our college version because of course we did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
doctorjazz:

It was in my daughter's high school Sweeny Todd production, was truly weird.
Thanks, Bronwyn, great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Webhamster Henry:

Judge Turpin was peeping at the diaphanously clad Johanna through the keyhole, says Sondheim on page 349 of Finishing The Hat
Avatar 8:57pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That is exceedingly weird doctorjazz. In my HS we had a "senior showcase" where some girls did Big Spender...oy. (I did Poor Wandering One from The Pirates of Penzance)
🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
WR:

Surprisingly it is the Jerry Herman Parade that i have a tiny bit of familiarity with due to the original cast record which I've seen around.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
diciassette:

thanks bronwyn!

I guess we're not going to hear Randy Newman as a really lovable Devil today.
Excellent show, Bronwyn! Great variety of selections.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm

They would cheat!
Avatar 🎭 9:03pm

FYI. I strongly recommend the Ray Charles/Cleo Laine Porgy & Bess. Very contrasting styles, and Charles naturally knocks it out of the park.
Avatar 9:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Imagine if all of these villains teamed up, we wouldn't stand a chance
🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
WR:

oh, damn, that other Parade is about the Leo Frank lynching. the Holacast Musuem had amazing sad and scary exhibition about the Leo Frank lynching a few years ago. Chilling, it included history of other lynchings as well for context. Is this a happy song to finish with?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm

LG, I serving that Porgy and Bess!
🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm

thank you Bronwyn, laters all.

@doctorj, you definitely DEserve it. I only have it on the original LP; not sure if it is available in any other form.
