Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

This kind of medley seems designed to appeal to a certain kind of audience, which is not the audience of tweens shrieking in the background.

I hope everyone is hip to the Dance With Me Stanley - Acid Jazz Hands back-to-back slammer. Friday nights are good for music :)

Hi all!

WR:

yes, LG, perhaps the meddly by the Osmond Bros was to benignly beguile the chaperoning parents as the teen females lost their shit.
Avatar 🎭 7:14pm
Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, we need medical attention after the Osmond Brothers knockout performance.
@WR, good point. Parents!

LG, I tuned in a bit late and missed it, but it sounds serious indeed...

Bronwyn Bishop:

guess what guys??? I'm writing a musical about the making of the infamous flop movie Heaven's Gate!

I had to get that off my chest
Avatar 🎭 7:24pm
Listener Gregory:

Wow! That's awesome.
Avatar 🎭 7:31pm
Listener Gregory:

One piece of advice: Don't make the first version of the musical 325 minutes long.
Avatar 7:35pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I'll try not to. I'll also try to avoid bankrupting a studio, blowing up a horse live on camera and doing 100+ takes of Christopher Walken taking off a hat

WR:

Ah, Bronwyn, careful to not cut out all the poetry.

I was seriously moved by that movie when I saw it on VHS in the mid 80s.

And this David Ackles record was a favorite of mine too. Never got it on CD or digital, haven't heard it since way back when.

@WR: I'm glad you are a fellow Heaven's Gate fan!!! I also think it is beautiful and that's why I'm giving it its own musical
  7:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

When you’re done with Heaven’s Gate, Bronwyn, do Ishtar!
Avatar 7:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Lol Doug the first person I told about this idea got really excited about it and it turned out he had gotten Heaven's Gate and Ishtar confused. Maybe I'll do a Flop Series
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Webhamster Henry:

I have this Dorothy Shay too, on LP though, not 78s
Avatar 🎭 7:52pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, will it be tragic or comedic? Or both?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Webhamster Henry:

Ishtar is supposedly not too bad - it is Elaine May after all - but its bad rep had to do with cost overruns, just like Heaven's Gate.

Throw that Itaiian and his monkey a nickel!
Avatar 8:05pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: It will definitely have elements of both! There is a lot of comedy to be mined from a disastrous movie production in which they built an entire functional 19th-century town that everyone hung out in for a year filming 220 hours of footage, but Michael Cimino's story is also pretty much a Greek tragedy (I am changing his name, the name of the movie and all the other names tho)

Listener Gregory:

Wise. "Hell's Entrance"?
By the way, Bronwyn, I love how you play the old and almost forgotten songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's hard to get an idea of this era of musical comedy and operetta, but really old movies have a bit of it, but TOPSY TURVY is pretty good, and there's a number in RAGTIME the movie that looks pretty authentic
Avatar 8:14pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Hell's Entrance...I love it!! And yes I love the really old stuff (lots of it tonight)
Avatar 8:14pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: That reminds me that I keep wanting to watch Topsy Turvy! And I love Ragtime the movie (and the musical, and the book, although they are all very different)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
Webhamster Henry:

The impressive thing in Ragtime the book is the extra long trolley ride, with transfers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Webhamster Henry:

TOPSY TURVY is so good, you can smell the mutton!
Avatar 🎭 8:26pm
Listener Gregory:

I somehow read the book Act One by Moss Hart, which revealed a lot about theatrical production in the old days, as well as a slice of life of a poor child of immigrants in the Lower East Side. Recommended.
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I def want to read that at some point! They made a play out of it too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Webhamster Henry:

Bolcom & Morris did a number of old Vaude and parlor tune albums.
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, Did they! What he went through is unbelievable, but it also shows the amount of theater in all facets of society in those days.
Avatar 8:33pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I wish theatre still had that kind of place in society
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Webhamster Henry:

The theatre -and theatre like experiences like beer gardens and big deal clubs with shows, bars with orchestras was it: there was no broadcast or other live mass media. also : lots of sheet music. That was it, you'd go out to see a show, then eat, with an orchestra, then go to the midnight frolic.
Avatar 8:46pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

This song was written by Rudolf Friml, who was pretty hot: en.wikipedia.org...

I believe this song was something of a hit for him, to the degree jazz singers have hits.
