Hello, Gregory!

Internet conked out just as the show started. Unjust! We're back on now. Howdy all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Doug Schulkind:

Extremely horrible news about Mills.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
david w:

Hello james and hello Doug. And yeah...
Avatar 5:08pm
Listener Gregory:

Almost the only thing I have ever heard about Mills involves this Center. So, it is insane for a small school to choose this to close. Rather, it should double down on it to take advantage of its unique reputation, for fund raising and attracting students.

I only know what we can read in the news, no inside scoops here, but it looks like it is going down.

Hello david w, ruth if you are out there and listeners everywhere.

Wikipedia: On March 17, 2021, Mills announced that starting in fall 2021 it would transition away from being a degree-granting college, instead becoming Mills Institute, and expected to graduate its last students in 2023.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
david w:

Apparently there is still some resistance to this plan. As ruth said to me today, why doesn't silicon valley recognize this as an historic treasure and rescue the place?
Avatar 5:30pm
Listener Gregory:

Seems that the Center closure was just one step on a complete closure. Their announcement suggests they don't really know what the Institute will be that continues after the College ends. www.mills.edu...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Doug Schulkind:

One Silicon Valley tech bro could save Mills with a month of lunch money.

That Roscoe Mitchell Sextet is fundamental to my music DNA. Soul comforting sounds.

David Weinstein very heroically presented show (so far), Listener Gregory very altruistically listened but must go very tragically now. Thanks very sincerely.

My Mills connections are Dr. PO and Phil Burk, of HMSL and JMSL fame.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
WR:

In 2011 I saw excerpt of Ashley's Perfect Lives in Spanish with Ned Sublette doing the narration. Before that I didn't really know Ashley's work. Having since heard lots of Ashley, curious to revisit Sublette's reading to balance the again Ashley's distinctive reading voice.

@Gregory: There are some rekkids I will never part w/....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:01pm

Oliveros will make an appearance today. Phil Burk good to note!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
david w:

Perfect Lives gets a lot of play, I always loved this lesser known piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

HMSL (Hierarchical Music Specification Language) was developed by Phil and Larry Polansky and a few others, Larry did more on the music side of it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
WR:

This and other Ashley pieces I've heard are what I would term as much more dense than Perfect Lives, if that makes sense. Perfect Lives I would term as elegiac. clumsy attempts on my part terming this and that.
Avatar 6:09pm
northguineahills:

I heart Larry Polansky (not to be confused w/ Paul Lansky)

Experimental music is a process to create. Otherwise, it's just a lazy term for music you don't "get".
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
david w:

Did Polansky go through Mills? I wouldn't be surprised. I met him as he was moving towards his looong career at Dartmouth.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
WR:

I put on head phones today because my partner is in work meeting across the room. Liking it. Is now my listening mode of choice for Ridgewood Radio.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm

The next piece (Behrman) was designed to be spatial so...enjoy!
